I am going to be downloading Oblivion from Steam and was wondering what MOD's I can/should use to make the game play better. Also any tips on things to keep in mind when plaything the game. No spoilers please just helpful tips like:

In Morrowind if you are given a quest item don't sell it or lose it, its a pain to do the quest with out it later.

Thanks.

lol? mods are to make the game better for a specific person. if i tell you EVERY mod i have, you will hate maybe a few. you need to find the mods that YOU want. the best way to do this:

1. think who what you like and then search tesnexus.

2. on the forums, go into oblivion files and keep looking down the list. you will see something like. this is the best method.

Well if you've never played this game before, I honestly suggest holding out on mods for a little bit. Get a feel for the game in its vanilla state before you go hacking it to bits with mods. If anything, throw on a mod or two that retexture things or replace character models. I'd hold off on anything that makes any major gameplay changes, which can even include custom armors. The game is really quite a gem. Give it a chance before you change it.

i think u should play the game once through first without mods (complete the main quest) in its vanilla state then do some of the other quests and explore a bit then decide what you think you could make better with a mod and go look for the one u want :turned:

I normally suggest playing the game a while with NO mods, it's a fantastic game in it's own right, and only you will know for sure what's not to your liking (for example, someone might suggest a mod that adds HH cup boobs, and you might not care about boobs at all). I do like to recommend Deadly Reflex if the person to person combat in the game seems too tame for you...because it's a mod where you gain greater combat skills as you level, and it's best to start early on. But yeah, give the game a try with no mods added, that's still the best way to experience it.

Yeah, I've been considering the DR and UV mods. My only reason for hesitating is that the tameness of Oblivion combat hasn't really bothered me. I'm not sure it's worth throwing a mod on to fix something that's not really broken, and that I don't think I'd enjoy. Maybe I'll try it eventually, though. I typically hear nothing but good about it.

The main benefits to having it are enjoying a lttle extra senseless violence and having a chance of an occasional critical hit on an enemy that might otherwise take a while to finish off. It won't necessarily make a huge difference, but I greatly enjoy person to person combat with it on.

You've been getting sound advice so far - play a while in its vanilla format, taste it before you spice it up...

But there is a Streamline mod that can add extra autosave points and increase your FPS if you work the ini correctly. It doesn't add anything except autosaves for every cell change and not just interior->exterior.

If (and this only after you've played the game enough to know what you want to change, if anything at all) you think the monsters need a little souping up to give your character a challenge, Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul may (or may not) interest you. But yeah, everyone else has a point. Play first, mod later.

Advice: Turn off all autosaves. It tends to corrupt and can cause crash on interior<->exterior change if it is overwritten too many times. Instead, rely on normal saves(and always make new save). Also Streamline is good alternative for in-game autosave & quicksave. Edited by LFact
