Whats your preferred way to play fallout New Vegas

If I have companions I only temporarily use them. I don't like having people follow me around.

I do like having ED-E rex with me though sometimes. Having too many people annoys me.

I have a mod installed so I can have as many companions as I want with me, so I sometimes group together a bunch of people and attack like that. If I am not going on a specific mission I don't like having other people with me.

I like stealth and close quarter combat, sometimes I will snipe though. I use a sword and really close combat, and a pistol for medium range.

I use a riot shotgun for close combat where I don't want to use my sword.

hm, my playstyle has changed a fair bit over the past six months....

I actually only finished the games storyline this evening. this is my fourth character (discounting the freakish purple-afro'd Robin Williams lookalike I used for testing a mod I made which required a new char to test :P)

the previous times, either I started fresh out of boredom (having completed all the sidequests and so on) or bugs forced me to.

finally however, with the addition of the latest patch apparently fixing my issues with Hidden Valley, I was able to progress.

to sum up my playstyle,

* Hardcore

* Female, Small Frame and Wild Wasteland, I also use the console to set her physical scale to 0.95. she's a little shorter than average, but not some shojo wierdness.

* Living out of my own mini vault - A Vault For Two

* Blue-Tiger variant Assassin's Suit unless I'm dressing up fancy or armoured, or testing out a mod. paired typically with a Golden coloured ballistic mask, night vision eyepiece (and hood) and a Desperado Hat.

* Blackwolf's Backpacks. the +70 and the larger hip-bag.

* no more than 5k caps at any time, I store the rest in the safe in the vault, along with any other currency I pick up (including incidentally, all the gold bars from Dead Money)

* usually less than 200 rounds of whatever ammo I need for the specific weapons set I'm carrying

* Weapons set started out primarily energy based with my Scarab Laser Rifle as the mainstay, but with the creation of my new Frag-12 mod, I've switched to 12Gauge shotguns. all of them. specifically the riot-shotgun, and my unique scoped and silenced hunting shotgun. The Paradox. which I will release shortly.

* no handguns. there's never any point. exceptions are the Archimedes 1 control gun and the Compact Laser Pistol

* Veronica, Willow, JT (the dog from the same mod as Willow), Doc Friday (NVB2) and Mr Fatso (my unique out-scale protectron) make up my complete companion lineup, however typically most of them live in the vault. I typically take only Veronica and Willow out. JT has lived in the vault since I got him.

As a rule, all my followers wear the same outfit as me, though their weapons typically reflect their personalities, Veronica wields either the Scarab or a powerfist variant of some form, usually the Displacer gauntlet. Willow prefers her own rifle.

My ethos in the game is loyalty to the employer. whoever hires me first gets my undivided loyalty, and I never betray them. Mr House hired me to do the job. I made absolutely certain to work to his ends. I felt by the end that I deserved all the praise and reward he heaped on me.

I tracked benny down, he sent me up to the penthouse (left a girl hanging! the swine!) while he made his getaway. so I made my way to Caesar's Camp to track him down (once House had instructed me to do his mission there, job comes first, then revenge.) once there, I let my sense of fair play get the better of me, and challenged Benny to a machete duel.

I literally walked through hoover dam killing every poor soul who had the misfortune to get between me and Mr House's objectives.

I blew away every last person in the Legate's Camp until I met the Legate himself. then I talked to him, persuaded him that it would be in his best interests to turn around and leave before I took the time to kill him myself.... Then I forced Gen Oliver at gunpoint to sign an unconditional surrender on behalf of Mr House.

I like to think of my character as a consumate professional. very quiet natured but competent, rooting for the best outcome, and I personally believe that Mr House's way is the best for all mankind. so I've supported him, given him my personal loyalty and allegiance. (IRL, not just as a character. his viewpoints mirror my own quite closely) I honestly don't think I've ever given a fictional character my loyalty before :P

My character wears a ballistic mask whose perfect features conceal the (rumoured) badly scarred face beneath. it distances her from her enemies and her allies as surely as my computer screen distances me from them. I literally have forgotten what she looks like under that mask.

The character herself has evolved too over the months I've played her. she started out quite innocent and skittish. a terrible shot and worse at melee. the tag skills I picked were medicine, lockpick and repair. everything else was piss-poor. it was in keeping with her character when benny was able to fool her into going to the penthouse without him while he made his getaway. her trip through primm however cemented her skills with a rifle. picking up a laser rifle in Nipton started her off on a long love-affair with the recoiless joy that is energy weapons. it was entering Vault 34 in search of the source of radiation there that compelled her to search for something with a little more punch. to which she devised 12-gauge explosive shells, dubbed "Frag-12". use of this ammunition lead to use of other projectile weapons, and soon she was wielding a hunting rifle and riot shotgun, her huge laser and plasma weapon collection left almost forgotten in the vault.

Her Melee skills never improved, her survival skills were minimal, enough to purify water and cook food if necessary, which it rarely was. pack-lunches were the rule. meals were eaten in restaurants, the Gourmant being a popular venue. though the Atomic Wrangler was easier reach.

Later on however, as her skillset improved, she became a highly lethal bounty hunter, known throughout the mojave as someone who got things done, or at least killed. though as the newspapers reported, she wasn't very good at talking her quarries down. typically they started shooting immediately and had to be put down.

liberal use of full-auto frag-12 rounds usually sufficed for this.

Oddly, use of traditional explosives like mines and grenades was never popular. the odd grenade or dynamite was used early-game, but later, their main use was in being broken down for use in Frag-12.

My rules when playing are that she does nothing I wouldn't do in her shoes. no murder and pillaging for me. though the frankly extreme badassery of the one-woman assault on NCRCF and the endgame battles go well beyond what I'd be likely to do even if I had her firearms skill and uncanny survivability when it comes to bullets :P

Like me, she plays the Violin and her favourite colour is a sorta bluey purple.

anyhow, since I'm sure only one in every three people are likely to read this far.....some pics for you guys :P

lol, all answered in the text. but to answer in order....

* - Blue Tiger Assassin's Suit

* - Made it. out of a white-glove society mask and a radiation suit helmet texture.

* - The Shotgun is called "The Paradox". I'll be releasing it as soon as I have a game-world location to put it in. or a viable method of getting it without cheating :P

  • 2 years later...

* I've always played on Very Hard mode with Hardcore enabled. I might lower the difficulty to Normal for Arwen's.

* My Charisma is always 1 (Charisma is useless and setting it to 1 is worth it for Doc Mitchell's remark alone) and Agility will always be 7 points or above.

* I always select the bad answers to Doc Mitchell's questions just for his remark.

* I put some effort into making all my characters look good.

* I try to avoid taking a detour to Vegas since I can easily break the game that way.

* I never play without Classic Fallout Weapons and a large selection of favourite mods.

* I never side with the Legion. Not only are they unrelatable, the conflicting quests are way too few and far between.

* I try all endings (bar Legion now that I've seen how it plays) but go with House last because I think it's the best ending. I tried a diplomatic approach with the Legate once but I much prefer fighting him. I always throw General Oliver off the Hoover Dam when I go for the Independent Ending.

* I'd make as much ammo as I can for all the guns I want to use. This is time-consuming and pointless so I want to break the habit.

* I collect unique weapons (unless I could so with the money, which is often the case when your build relies on using items which can only be bought and you've changed the game to use harsher barter settings). I always keep unique armour and Sierra Madre armour.

* I collect lots of parts of crafting.

I tend to play on Normal. My general play style is:

  • Sneak
  • Snipe
  • Explore
  • Fair fight where not suicidal
  • Play as Good but pragmatic (and occasionally grumpy)

I'm a bit of a hoarder. I keep anything I can use for crafting or to repair my best gear. I used to loot EVERYTHING down to the ashtrays, but I like to think I have more dignity now. ;) I go very heavily loaded with weapons etc on quests and whenever going into unknown structures. I load my companions up to the eyeballs. I sometimes return just for looting runs after killing everything. I like Boone and ED-E, but I like to experiment with other companions.

I like to think I'm a bit strategic in fights, e.g. taking down stragglers from a distance before entering the main battle, using terrain and mines to my advantage (particularly with Deathclaws etc).

Exploring is a big part of my gameplay. I just head for an unexplored compass POI marker and go, or before I learned about compass markers I just walked towards the largest area with no found locations. ;)

I have a long-term view to Skills and Perks, e.g. don't take anything you can get in-game eventually or otherwise bypass.

Hardcore. Difficulty Very Hard. Project Nevada set npc endurance multiplier to max. Hoard everything but junk, kill everyone who makes me mad or says a bad comment about me. Steal from everyone and everything (habit from FO1 and 2). Kill merchants and loot everything. Then when i'm done, bomb mr house and crown myself as the lord emperor king of new vegas.

Oh and kill easy pete. I hate him. Stole his house. And that girl who's being attacked by geckos in tutorial, i kill her too. Who goes in the wasteland alone knowing there are big (not really) lizard things that hunt in packs? clearly she would get killed eventually.

And i turn cass on. Really, Me, a noob courier who was shot in the head not too long ago won a drinking contest against her and she's supposed to be the queen of whisky. No-no dear, you're a pretender. and the van graffs pay well.

I'm a guy, but I play with a female character who wears a pink mini-dress. Mostly because she makes for a really unlikely hero, who is terribly inappropriately dressed, and that amuses me. No one would look at her and think she's a total bad-ass, but she is, and that's just awesome.

I play hardcore normal, though I also like followers and having followers has made it too easy. I should probably step up the difficulty to compensate.

I like followers. I have used them all long enough to do all their companion quests. My current followers are Veronica, Willow (companion mod), and converted FO3 Bittercup to a FNV follower. There's just something I find appealing about a team of women, though I wish they could converse with each other like followers do on Dragon Age. I also have ED-E, but thinking of losing him because he is WAY too powerful after his companion quest and kills a lot of enemies before I even see them (I like to be the one doing the killing).

I pick up everything of value and sell it, so it's helpful to have a lot of followers because I can carry more stuff. It's actually an annoying habit, but I can't seem to break myself of it. It's a boring routine, but I can't help myself. I figured I might as well make a goal out of it, so I plan to see if my character can become a millionaire.

I fast travel, a lot. I collect too much stuff and then get the urge to sell it, so I use a lot of alcohol and other stuff to increase my strength, then fast travel to a merchant. I also wander the wastes a lot just killing baddies for the XP, but that just gives me more stuff to sell.

I do not kill anyone who is not hostile, because I don't feel like my character would. Even though they are fake computer people, I still feel bad when innocent characters die, especially named ones.

I always pick the nicest dialogue option, because I think my character would. She has so much karma, even stealing a lot of stuff doesn't seem to put a dent in it.
