(PETITION) unskippable video adds cross the line

I've noticed something curious. I believe I've read every post in this thread, and only found one whre someone might have agreed with the OP, (it's not really clear what that post is saying...) And no one has "signed" the petition. NOT A SINGLE ONE.

Regardless of the "number who agree/disagree, but never take the time to reply", 100% against is a pretty overwhelming margin in almost any circumstance. :whistling:

Thandal, you know - the amount of disagreement vs agreement here, is not representative for the whole community.

It's not a thread against advertising on this site, in general.

However, an anonimous voting among all members regarding this specific subject would lead to a very funny result ;).

Thandal, one mistake which nearly every single ad-supported website I've ever seen makes is that they hook up with advertisers who don't target the obvious audience of the website. Why are we here? We have, all of us, a single thing in common, and that's the ONLY thing that can be assumed we have in common -- we play games on our PCs. I don't want to see candy advertisements (one of them is currently just that). I don't even like Starburst candy, and I personally find the advertisement to be mildly offensive, and, yet, I just finished seeing it come up five flipping times in a row! Sure, it comes in a 30 second and a shorter 15 second version, but it's the same ad and it doesn't matter how many times the advertiser throws it at me I'm never going to buy a single package of Starburst.

So, yeah ... give me ads on games, and not just the newest ones, either. If some advertiser is having a blowout sale, I want to know about it! Don't feed me ads on cars (I don't drive), don't feed me ads on guns (I already own two and that's quite enough), don't feed me ads on Viagra (I have the wrong "plumbing" for that), and don't feed me ads for a porn site (I can get plenty of the real thing in real life, thank you). Targeted advertising doesn't have to be all that difficult for any themed website. Anyone with an IQ above room temperature can figure out that everyone who uses this site is interested in PC games, even if you can't figure out exactly which ones we might buy. Any other sort of ad is going to reach a smaller audience than a gaming ad.

Ideally, too, there would be enough ads that we wouldn't see the same ones so often that we just start to automatically ignore every ad window because we figure we've already seen it. That's pretty much my policy, any more, so like I said -- repetition breeds contempt and that is going to ultimately hurt the advertiser more than help it, and it certainly isn't helping this site, assuming Nexus gets a bonus every time we click through on an ad, which I will do if I see something that interests me.

RE: The starburst ad. Gamers often like sugary things. Starburst is a sugary thing. That's probably how that got there.

I'm sure Dark0ne is also regularly checking up on who's paying the most. Long story short there are a lot of factors which govern whose ad gets shown where, and bid price is going to play a larger role than targeting. Spyware vendors like Zwinky for example don't really care about who's seeing their ads, they just want them to be seen, so they'll pony up the cash even for sites that aren't in their target audience.

I don't know what you guys see, but I get mostly ads related to games, online games, but still....games.

I guess it depends on the region where we live. I used to get a noisy smiley add some time ago, but lately I only see game related ads, wich are harmless and sound free fortunatly.

Yeah, as Dark0ne says repeatedly, the ads are served-up by a third party using regional settings based on your IP. So even folk on-line and seeing ads at the exact same time do not see the same things. Edited by Thandal

Depending on the ad networks involved, it may also have to do with sites you've visited previously.

This right here is true as well. Some advertisers do scan your cookies to see where you have been, so that they can serve an advert that is more styled towards the target of the ad.

REALLY crappy practice, IMO but the advert companies don't ask Me about their practices

And many browsers do allow you to block particular parts of a site. I know that Opera allows you to display one area of a page's advert content, while blocking another part.

Google the browser that you use and see if you can find the settings for it, if you don't know already ;)
