FNV constantly crashes even with the mods disabled.

Thinking that it was probably my brand new XFX Radeon HD 6850 video card that is causing the problems with Fallout New Vegas constantly crashing, the following is what transpired between myself and XFX tech support over the last few days --without a solution:

[ 2/27/2011 11:24:25 PM] I am currently playing Fallout New Vegas --with mods added. Ever since the new update, when I am playing Fallout New Vegas it crashes constantly. I get about 10 to 15 minutes of playtime in then it crashes. In addition, if I go through a door, an elevator, or a hatch the games crashes. Moreover, just to start the game is a hassle. If and when I click on the icon on the desktop or elsewhere the game will start for about 15 seconds and then I get then following message: "Fallout New Vegas has stopped working." Here again, Sometimes it takes several tries to get the game to start. Last night I counted 10 tries, before it would start, but then it would crash because I was trying to activate and elevator. I have had the setting set on high with the antialiasing set on "4"; the Anisotroic filtering on "8"; and, the screen effects on "HDR." I have also tried reducing the settings, but with the same results. Moreover, I have 5 fans in my case and it's clean. So, if it is overheating then I have a shitty card, that isn't even 6 months old yet. Incidentally, nothing in my system is over-clocked either.

As for the problem, do you have any other games or applications that have problems? It would be helpful to know if this is isolated to fallout, or if all games have issues. [3/1/2011 4:31:27 PM] Thanks. It appears to be only isolated to Fallout New Vegas and/or Steam. My Dragon Age Origins runs fine and it has nearly 40 moods attached to it.

As for following through with the steps to reinstall the drivers, I refuse to pay for any sort of driver-finder software. I have been burned twice by two different companies. That is to say, I have paid for and installed their software, run their driver-finder and installed the drivers that supposedly needed to be updated. Restarted my computer and ran their software again: and, again, it recommended that I needed to install the new drivers that I just installed. Forget it.

Have you checked in with UBI to see if they have a solution to this issue as it seems to be only related to that single game? I believe there are also support forums for Fallout New Vegas. Have you removed any third party mods for the game as I am sure that is the 1st thing their support will have you do. Might also be worth wile to completely uninstall then reinstall the game. [ 3/3/2011 1:29:11 PM] I have even contacted Nexus.com where all of the mods come from and they too have a technical support section for all the games; such as Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Dragon Age Origins and the like. All they recommend to disable the mods to see which one is the culprit. Beyond that nothing. I get no response from Bethesda or Steam: as Bethesda is the developer and Steam is where the game is downloaded from. Unlike fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas is not a standalone game, unfortunately. I guess I will just have to live with it: since there is no obvious solution. Last night I finally got to the end of the game, and as I was trying to watch the epilogue the game kept crashing every two minutes or so. I would get the game restarted and as soon as the game started I saved it, then it would crash again. I had to do this through the entire epilogue."

The mods don't 'come from' TheNexus. They come from the mod authors who share them here for others to use. TheNexus has no control over the mods (beyond what we will or will not allow here)

And our 'Technical Support Section' is made up of users like you who generously spend their time to try to help others with their technical problems. The only reward they get is the kudos that should be given for their help. :thumbsup:

 

Just disabling a mod does not actually remove it. The textures and meshes are all still loaded. To fully remove a mod, you need to go into the folders and remove everything that the mod installed. then to be safe, remove the mod from your data folder entirely - It isn't necessary to delete the mod, but after you have removed the textures and meshes you might as well as you will have to reinstall it if you want it back again.

 

The latest patch does seem to cause problems with some mods. We are still trying to find a common thread to the crashes since the update.

 

It is not Bethesda's, steam's or the video card maker's place to make the game work with mods, that is the province of the mod makers. Some of whom are no longer supporting their mods. :confused:

 

Sometimes the best thing to do if you have a difficult problem is to get your game back as close as you can to vanilla. Often that means completely reinstalling. Before doing that, be sure to save everything - copy your existing data folder to a new location with a new name - such as Oldata. That way you can copy it back if you find the mods were not the problem after all.

 

Re: your mod list - just a list of mods is not much use for troubleshooting - what we really need is the actual load order of the mods, and whether each one is .esp or .esm Unfortunately, the mods in the game data list are usually not in load order - you must use a utility such as FOMM to see the true load order.

I understand that it is the modders who are responsible for their mods and whether they keep them updated or not. I am not trying to put blame on anyone in particular. I guess I will try and uninstall everything for the 10th time and see what happens. Do you happen to know what the following means?

The entries that say 'inactive' are probably not checked on your list

 

This may have something to do with your problem. A esp that needs a master that is no longer active.

 

wsexInnuendoNPCs.esp

And up near the top of the list I see: wsex.esm (Inactive) inactive means it is not being loaded.

 

Deactivate the esp and see if that helps.

 

I do see at least 2 mods that may change the same thing

VeronicaFixer.esp

V_Veronica.esp

The second one will override any changes made by the first - which may or may not cause a problem depending on exactly what each changes. often these can be fixed by swapping the load order.

As a rule of thumb, I would always add: If you think it could be mod-related, run it through with FNVEdit.

It simulates Fallout starting up, loading up all the files, including mods and has served modders well since it came out for Oblivion.

If it encounters a problem, it'll get listed in the log, and there's nothing better then being able to give a specific error code or log to your techie helpers.

If its a fatal error (an error that forces Fallout to crash), the log will simply stop and paste the error in the log, and you can see the problem.

Usually its easy enough to 'decypher' the culprit on your own.

 

When FNVEdit says that a certain file is missing a master, you should see if its present in the Data folder. If so, see if it wasn't loaded before it.

I use BOSS to sort the load orders automatically of all my modded Bethesda games (mainly thats Oblivion, F3 and FNV)

Do keep in mind BOSS doesnt recognise all mods, especially new ones. These will automatically be moved on the bottom of the load-order and may need to be manually sorted. (I usually stick the likeminded ones together, like clothes with clothes, guns with guns...)

 

Another hint that I've been giving is, check the length of your load order. The stronger your RAM (I think thats the right one...), the longer a load-order it can handle.

But at one point, when it gets too long, odd stuff happens. In F3 it normally was so that nothing non-vanilla was loaded, even though a Fasttravel before it was.

I've still got my sublime example of reaching load-order length EA and things started to malfunction in F3.

 

As bben aptly said, if all else fails, reinstall. As part of an investigation alla Sherlock Holmes, this will shorten the list of possible culprits by deduction.

If its a fresh install and yet it fails, there's no chance a mod would be responsible.

 

Consider installing a big overhaul that encapsulates a few of your favorite mods (on a fresh install). Might help.

I have done that already and here is what I told Steam and Bethesda both in not so many polite words --who keep passing the buck to one another:

 

My Response:

 

"The issue is not resolved as of yet. I have done a complete uninstall for the umpteenth time, cleaning every damn file from both Steam and Bethesda --as well as all mods and mod utilities --to include any files left in the damn registry. I put everything back. And, while I had fewer crashes throughout the game this time, when it came time to enter the LUCKY 38, to confront Mr. House, that's when the game began to crash every five minutes and straight on through to the epilogue--and through it. There weren't (and there aren't) any mods associated with the LUCKY 38 or Mr. House --not to mention the finale or the epilogue. So, you tell me what the hell is wrong? It isn't the mods and I will stake my life --as well as yours--on it. So, get your .... out of the break room and figure this .... out?!?"

Maybe I missed it but I did not notice any archive invalidation invalidated reference in editor. I read somewhere depending on set up it matters where that is placed in your .ini archive list (before or after certain .bsa ). Hope you get it worked out.

As for the ArchiveInvaladion I used this one from Nexus; http://www.newvegasn...le.php?id=37004; and placed it inside the Data folder like it said to do. Beyond that I have no clue how it works, if it works, or when it works. I did however make the changes in the .ini file like it also said to do.
