Skyrim Child Overhaul - Multi-Modder Resource Project ?

Would any of you more experienced modders be interested in working on a group project to help create the ultimate child overhaul mod to date?

Like many of you, I have either tried or researched the various child overhaul mods out there. But, as great as some of them are, I still find them lacking in one way or another. They are either too anime, or designed for pedo's, or replace the potato heads with better looking heads that still end up leaving all the kids looking the same - none of which works for me. And, no child overhaul mod here on the Nexus has yet to include children of every elf & beast race in the game. I would like to change that. And it may be possible, since the creator of Skyrim Child Overhaul has graciously allowed the modding community to use his mod as a resource to continue where he left off.

For those not familiar with Hallgarth's work, his mod was one of the few to give all the children in Skyrim a unique facial appearance that better resembled their parents. He also created children of every elf race that looked like they were part of the game all along. This was a most impressive undertaking. And, while Hallgarth has decided not to continue working on this mod, I and many others, still believe this mod has the potential to be the best child overhaul that Skyrim has ever seen.

Many of you who have been following his mod have asked that he open it up for other modders to continue his work, so now that he has, let's get together & make this happen! I'm not a great modder by any means, & this would be new territory for me as well. But, the modding community has an opportunity to do something that hasn't been done yet, so even if all I end up doing is encouraging more experienced modders to take this on, then I'm good!

I'm going to list some of the main things I would like to see happen with this mod, & I'd like to hear what you would like to see done also. So, please, add onto this list & let's get a serious conversation going.

My list:

  • The heads still look a bit potato-ish. I realize he was trying to stay close to vanilla, but I think maybe this can still be accomplished by substituting famale heads for each race, as boys haven't reached puberty yet & should still have soft features. This should allow for even more variety since many won't look like they have the same cheeks, etc.
  • The child outfits need to be expanded to either allow adult clothing, or vastly increase the number of child outfits that are additional & not replacers.
  • The addition of beast race children along with the elf race children already included in the mod, with as many head & color choices as are available in the adult counterparts.
  • Retextures of the bodies to color match any new head textures.

Does this sound feasible? What would you add or change?

I actually started a mod that did almost exactly what you are saying, but it got banned because some of the assets were from female adults and still showed genitals. I actually have fixed it to be appropriate, but just haven't uploaded it again yet. I'll try to release it again soon. At it's current stage, it only includes the vanilla child races, but it will be fairly easy to make children of other races. Maybe a couple of hours at work at most to make the races and get them working, and then I'd just have to add some elf and beast children to the world. I'll see if I can find my thread so I can give you a link and you can see my step-by-step plan.

I thought something like that might have happened when Nexus said your file was under review, which is why I think just changing the heads & making the skin textures look better on the existing child body meshes may be the way to go. But, if you've already got something working that fixes the problem, then go for it. Your previous face picks looked promising. Now that Skyrim Child Overhaul is available as a resource, maybe you can use some of what Hallgarth has done with your mod.

I don't think there is really anything in that mod that would help me. I'm kind of trying to stay away from any heads that are even remotely potato-like, and I feel like his heads kind of were. I mean no offence to him - I understand trying to stay close to the vanilla 'feel'. I just personally want children to look more like small people and less like stylized sculptures. I'll try to re-upload later this week, if Blender behaves for me.

Na, I meant for the rest of it. I think going with the heads you are using in your screenshot looks great & is definitely the way to go. It's the way I thought would be best too, & was trying to figure it out before you made it back :)

What's wrong with RS children other than the fact that it doesn't have elf or beast children. I use RS Children along with Tokkimoon's More Adoptable Children, and I'm pretty satisfied. I wish there was a good option for Argonian children, but there simply isn't at this point.

They don't look like they belong in the same world as the adults. They look stylized. They also have the default child bodies, which are blocky, and they don't have any weight slider support.

That could depend on the player's setup of adult NPCs, I think. Perhaps the way they've modded their character and other adults to be less like the vanilla style could mean RS Children kids look aesthetically closer to them. Personally, I'd like to stick to RS Children too because I'm partial to its cute kids. :P This probably means I'll have to learn how to patch other mods with it though.

Are you guys thinking of changing the weights of the kids ingame for diversity too?
