JDGameArt
Nexus is an amazing community website with out a doubt, but the new policy of making people watch a 30 second AD every time they download should be looked at. I haven't done much lately, but Ive collectively contributed over 20k downloads, and 150 endorsements from 13 mods, and its annoying to have to go through this every time I come here to take care of business. Spread'em out... Make people watch the 30 second video the first time around, then allow them to skip it if any other downloads happen within a 15 min widow or something. Or... Give people the next 3-5 downloads with no interruption... Something on those lines. I know this site probably cost a lot to run, and its nice to make a buck along the way too, but balance is always nice. I also know for the average user passing by may only download 1-2 mods. Modders on the other hand may come here and download many mods in one shot. Sitting there for 30 seconds a crack is more than I can bare, lol.. Any way, /rant off
buddah
http://www.thenexusforums.com/index.php?/topic/307327-the-nexus-finances/ Should answer your questions as to why and the cost of maintaining the site.
JDGameArt
Yeah, I understand... I know this sites exploded with content in the last year or so. Id just go premium and be done with it but I'm a poor college student. If Ive got gas in the tank and enough for cafeteria coffee I'm doing good.
Dark0ne
It's something that will change, but just not for a little while more yet.
bben46
Posts, downloads and endorsements - while we do appreciate them, don't pay the bills. Ads do that for those too poor to pay for premium. While you are suffering through a 30 second ad just remember, that ad paid for you to be able to download for FREE. http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-dance015.gif
HellsMaster
Imagine that. Pay 20p per mod download.
ginnyfizz
I have paid for Premium and stay logged in, so apart from a glitch a week or two back I have never seen an advert. I do understand the position that not everyone can pay for Premium and hence the bills have to be paid. Ads are therefore the way to go. But I do believe, correct me if I am wrong, and going on what I saw, that the Nexus ads are not too intrusive and do not mine your browsing history. (I had an un-nerving experience with that elsewhere). We ordinary members all get far more out of this site than we put in, we should remember that. grannywils
I'm with both Bben and Ginny. I'm amazed at what we are able to download for free. I certainly understand if one cannot afford to pay for premium or simply chooses not to. It was actually a struggle for me to afford it, but I was lucky at the time and was able to come up with the funds (which really were not that much, considering what we get for it). But I see ads all over the Internet. I do not think they warrant this much whining on the Nexus site. Just my opinion...
Telyn
Many other game and file repository sites do one or more of the following:Limit you to a small number of downloads a day.Make some or most downloads available only to subscribers.Have ads that install drive-by or other malware.Have ads that are not suitable for underage viewing.Have ads that are scams.Require you to download a dodgy toolbar or download manager which does all sorts of tracking of you or worse or inundates you with popups.Require you to give them a whole lot of personal info which they then sell to all kinds of people you would rather not have it.Spam your email.Install supercookies which can communicate with other sites without your knowledge and cannot be deleted by purging cookies in your browser. Even creepier, Flash supercookies can turn on your microphone and even your webcam unless you have disabled that at the Adobe site! Thank goodness that is rare but be careful on game sites that feature Skypelike chat features.Require credit card information as "proof of age."Have such poor moderation that malware uploads are not detected and removed for a long time, if ever.Allow illegal uploads and mod theft.Auto-renew memberships and make it almost impossible to cancel. This site does NONE of those things. Watching the ads is a small price to pay for getting your files from a site that appears to care about your privacy and your safety. I am also getting tired of sites that so deeply integrate social networking features that the social networking sites can track your usage even if you do not belong to them or want them to collect data on you. This site does not do that. Instead, this forum has a little Delete My Cookies link at the bottom of the page. I trust this site. I do not trust many sites, including some of the top sites on the internet, but this site is one of the very few game sites I don't feel like I need to scan my computer after I go there. I wish I could afford to donate on top of going Premium. I hope when my Premium expires, I can afford to renew it.
Thephedora
Maybe some other way to pay for premium then pay pal? Say Google checkout or something similar along those lines?I'd pay for premium but making a pay pal account just for a premium for one site just can't be justified on the penny pinching accounts I'm keeping atm.
