I have seen that some modders are soliciting donations on this mods and I was just wondering if this is acceptable and ok? I ask as I havent been able to find information that can point me in either direction. Any info would be helpful and thank you in advance.

well modding takes time and effort so i could see where one or two very very involved mods taking massive time to create and support would be an understandable excuse to request donations

BUTT

IMO modding is at its very core done just for a hobby to improve games for personal taste and freely shared for others with only compliments and or thanks as your reward

everything involved in modding games is using copywrited files belonging to the game companies and wanting to make money from improving the game someone else owns and created might be justified in some peoples minds it is wrong

i didnt want to get into copywrite issues of wether its using copywrited files belonging to the game companies for profit because thats a whole thread unto itself

The ESP and ESM files you create in GECK are owned by Bethesda and cannot be sold.

The same is not true of models and textures created by modders. These are not bound by the GECK legal agreement since they were not created with the GECK. A modder could, theoretically, sell these. (although not here, since there is no infrastructure in place and it may well be against the rules)

Asking for donations is not selling.

This ^

It always irks me when people ask for modding donations :verymad: Why?! If you love creating games that much, go get a job as a games designer lol

Modding is a free hobby so why is extra funding neccessary? If you can't afford a laptop that can run games then perhaps game modding isn't for you?

Yeah. Just another day in paradise here. It's not like there are economic problems in the world or unemployment is high or anything.

Hey, while I'm being a sarcastic jerk here: I'm drowning in compassionate conservatism and supply-side economics has made everyone way too wealthy! Damn you, Reagan! Your wonderful ideas have made the world way too wonderful a place to live! Life has become far too boring and easy!

Lol, not quite sure what you're getting at here? Are you saying I should give money to someone to buy a computer just so they can mod... as apposed to giving it to charity or improving my own life?

I would rather give my money to a fellow modder, who has earned it.

Then to a charity. Where I have no idea where my money is going towards.

I always donate if I enjoy the work of ANYONE in the gaming community.

I help indie companys if they have a game I like, I donate to servers I play on, hell, I even buy an artists soundtrack if I think its good enough.

So I would say OPINION wise, ASKING for donations is fine. Anyone who has a problem with ASKING for money needs to have their head checked. ( not meant to be offensive)

Now, the debate of `its a hobby,' and `The people do it because they love the game,' - are both wrong.

I dont belive and never have done that the modding community does so for the community.

They do so for two things - personal use and to make people (who ever they are) satisfied.

No modder in his right mind would make a mod he or she does not wish to use for themself. What a waste of time.

And no modder would every create a mod just for one group in paticular.

We have a great, friendly and fun atmosphere here at the nexus.

I dont think any member of the staff would have an issue against anyone selling their work, BUT. and heres the problem.

If the site does allow people to buy ( not donate) how would they regulate the trade? It could become a case of `he stole my work,'

`she took the idea for a quest,' all of this plays into the paying for a mod.

Long rant over.

TL/DR?

- modders do not do it for money.

- modders do not do it FOR YOU.

- modders are normal people. who would enjoy it if you bought them a pint once in a while.

But thats just my take on it.:pirate:

fair enough but i would say ASKING for donations is fine if you want to but anyone who needs to be ASKING for money if you use their mods needs to get a job. ( also not meant to be offensive but just a reality check)

you are soo wrong and you arent talking to and havent met the right people, true modders are helpfull and WILL go out of their way to help others do mods they care nothing for and would never do themselves. it is evidenced on the forums in many places where mods are made just for someone they dont even know.

often i see requests be answered and some modders even add things to their mods because others want them and it wasnt for themselves that they did it.

are there selfish people who only care about themselves and think modding could be a way to get self recognition and maybe even make a little money from donations as a bonus, yes there are but IMO the selfish ones are the minority and most modders are not the me me me its all about me people.

yes we can all agree on this

if they allowed the selling of modded files they would be party to reselling copywrited files for profit and face stiff fines after the site wqas shut down

in closing, we definately dont have the same opinion of modders and what modding is all about
