A 'kinder, gentler Hellbird'?

 

While I often disagree(d) with his methods, he did frequently tell people (in excessively blunt terms) what they needed to be told.

Well I do admire Peregrine for his maturaty, most people probly would have started a new account and gone straight back to thier old ways.

On the contrary - apparently Peregrine (shortly after his posting privleges had been removed) created a "clone" account dubbed "Peregrine's Clone". While I found it rather amusing, this was clearly a textbook example of "trolling" ("trolls" are constantly creating new accounts in order to circumvent being totally banned; however, Peregrine's clone account was subsequently deleted). While most people would think of Peregrine as a mature poster (albeit rather aggressive and blunt), I managed to discover for myself (the hard way) that his methods seemed more like those of a troll rather than those of a moderator.

 

A moderator never encourages flaming (even if a poster deserves it), and even if you disagree with another poster's views, you still have a responsibility to maintain order on the forums. Moderators function just like police officers - they're given the authority to uphold AND enforce the laws (or forum rules in this case), while at the same time being resposible enough to abide by the very rules they're authorized to enforce.

 

In order to be a competent moderator, one needs to have an understanding of the rules of the forum, and how to identify the offenders who break those rules. Anyone can easily start up a war with forum offenders, and just like the police, moderators discourage forum members from being "vigilantes", those that assume the roles of moderators and tell offenders to back off.

 

And just like the police, moderators may become abusive with their authority, and forget that they are also subject to the rules of the forum just like everyone else. I don't know anything about why Peregrine's moderator status was removed, but I'm assuming he may have abused his position, even though he may have had a point in many of the arguments he's been involved in.

 

I myself know and have felt the wrath of the Hellbird - in fact, I inadvertantly might have been partly responsible as to why he lost posting privleges recently. Don't take this the wrong way, and outright blame me for it, but Peregrine (being the mature individual he is) should have known that his actions were not going to be tolerated by the site staff NOR the moderators.

 

Anyway, I truly do feel sorry for him being temporarily "punished" (kinda like prison or community service :P ), and I wish things would never have gotten out of control in the first place. I hope in the near future things on the forum can get back to normal (although that sounds rather awkward :huh: ). Heh... I kinda miss the old Hellbird... *sniffles* ... But then again, I could be wrong, and he may very well still be the same trolling, cynical, bashing monkey he normally is :P
