Mcarey6
I might be alone here, but it feels substantially smaller than Skyrim or FO3. There is far more stuff crammed in but getting from one place to another feels too quick. I played Skyrim without using Fast Travel. If I had to go from one corner to the other it felt like a major ordeal. Going from one corner to the other in FO4 feels trivial in comparison. In FO3 everything felt like it was a long hike if you didn't use fast travel. Granted there was a lot of dead space in between but I really liked the wide open feeling. On top of that you had extensive underground areas. I'm only 13 hours into FO4 so I don't know about underground. However, from what I've seen so far there isn't much. cyberhoundMkII
It is smaller. You can get from one end to another much faster than in Skyrim or FO3. All of the content is packed into pretty small area. It is funny, I once fast traveled while doing big quest fight, and while I was tweaking my power armor Preston ran through entire map to get to me :) Then I teleported back to the other side and watched him run back again by clicking on map every few seconds, and it took him about 3 minutes to get from Sanctuary to east coast :) I wouldn't worry about the size, all of those games are small, it is better if there is something to do every minute. Walking somewere 2 minutes longer doesn't really give the illusion of desolation anyway.
Markmid
Little bit overfull, in that you'll trigger quests you don't want or clear locations you weren't planning to just by walking down a block. It does give the feeling of being in a warzone if that is what they were after, but it will likely cut down the time it takes to finish the content by a margin. Groogo
The map is great. There are many area types, some areas are fill of action some are barren. Some say it about the size of Skyrim, but I feel it a bit bigger. That's not my take at all! The map is pretty small for a game of this type, maybe half the size of Skyrim, I don't know for sure. But I am having fun and I am happy to have the game. Edited November 12, 2015 by Groogo
vram1974
It's not whether the map is small or not, it's about whether you're forced into linear exploration by the programmers. And you are.
Groogo
It's not whether the map is small or not, it's about whether you're forced into linear exploration by the programmers. And you are. They also have made it so that player's will have to return to some of the content at a later time to open locks that are set by levels by the perk system. It's not a bad idea I guess to get people to use contnet more then once. The game is fun but it's pretty perdictable. Anyway, I have seen a whole worse and I am still cheerful about being able to play Fallout 4, it's a good fun game so far at level 15.
Poacher886
Oh it seems my fears are confirmed then....Todd said it was the same size as skyrim but without the non-traversable mountains, thus bigger! Size is one of the most important factors imo, the world can otherwise be filled with mods.....no mods increase the map size, so if its small it stays small and only gets smaller with play! As mentioned in NV, you never could be more than a few minuted walk from the two main highways.....wasteland not!,
Boombro
..no mods increase the map sizeYou can remove the borders and add space. Plus one can easily make a big map.
notpitdefender
The map is smaller and you can feel that, its mianly just Boston and a bit of outskirts, its not big desert like in rage or mad max, and its not huge world like in skyrim, also don't know how big f3 map was but world felt large here it doesnt. Though it doesn't really matter game focuses on other things, its a different Bethesda game but I think its nicer, quality isnt 60euro worth yet but its a lot better than previous games. I am saying all that cause I was also worried about map size hindering game experience but it doesn't.
Poacher886
Recent reports are mixed, some say FO3x2 others saying its smaller than Skyrim and about same size as FO3???? Seems odd to go down a size after skyrim and other competitors going bigger and bigger, those that say quality over quantity is a mute point in my book...the quality comes from mods and quantity gives longevity. Once you have no-ware left to explore, the repetition starts familiarisation; and familiarisation breeds boredom. Interesting to hear you can go beyond the borders..perhaps modders will have a free rein to extend on the original map size.
