Survival Mode Problems

Exibitions

Recommended Posts

I'm not going to complain about how survival mode is a pale insult to it's name, seeing as you don't have to eat and drink like you did in NV. I'll just wait for a mod that adds that functionality

What I am going to complain about, is that on Survival mode, you're more or less forced to use the power armor at all times.

I'm a sneak character. I love sneaking. I use that in combination with a sniper rifle to take care of my problems in fall out games thus far.

But on survival, the ridiculous enemy detection, health, and how tightly packed they all are, along with the fact I've found MYBE ten 308 bullets in fourteen hours this far, makes that impossible. So It's forcing me to do something that goes again everything that's fun for me.

I have to use the power armor. Which relies on rare power cells to use, and thus far I've only found three in the entire game, and they don't last long.

In the spirit of transparecy, I did just get lucky and find five more 308 rounds on a raider. Who had no gun that used them. Silly raiders.

Which reminds me. The pipe pistols, the guns you get from every raider in the world, are useless. So are the rifles. They do almost no damage, evne whne modded. So I'm fifteen horus in now, and the only half decent weapon I have is a sniper rifle with no ammo, and my 10mm from the tutorial.

You don't get to choose which weapon you straight out use in Fallout games, you have to mix it up. There just is never enough ammo to dedicate to one weapon, at least not until you can start farming it off vendors. I have used the power armor once in combat against the death claw, I now have 3 suits in my collection room gathering rust(or for a rainy day). I run all weapons with my build focusing on crafting perks to get the most out of every weapon. If you want to focus on on sneaky sniper, a good early weapon is Righteous authority decked out with long range enhancements through the science perk(laser weapon). Currently a level 18 with 6 weapons I cycle through regularly.

10mm for standard engagements, double barrel shotgun for tight combat (Geurilla warfare type of weapon), 2 snipers*A hunting rifle for physical penetration and the Righteous Authority, a pipe lmg to burn through all that .38 ammo with a large drum(another close combat weapon) and I just found a legendary power fist which is really rad. I've also found the grognak gear. Even Melee is viable with 4 points in endurance.

I am having an awesome time and the difficulty is one of the best I've seen in any game. When you say you "need" the power armor, that is where you are looking at the mode in the wrong aspect. You need to stay flexible is survival.

Another point on the food, it's done a different way then simply having hunger bar. If you are exclusively relying on stim-packs, you are gonna have a bad time. Pick up all the meat you can find and roast them up for some pretty good healing items. I reserve all my stims for broken limbs. Keep an eye out for the survival guides as they improve on the food a lot. In the first three you get Double meat looted and +50% healing from cultivated vegetables. I carry around a big inventory of mutfruits as a healing item because you can quick bind the whole stack to one button and spam it to recoup health.

Would agree, the stealth tuning is fairly broken, made worse by silenced weapons requiring a high gun nut perk to even fit onto the few weapons that can use it. I've found that using grenades and mines help weaken clusters when you can plan for it. But yes, ammo is very tight early on. Using the readily available pipe rifles for less meaningful situations helps preserve ammo for when you need it. A few early perks can also help significantly, such as those related to finding ammo or caps, or anything damage resistance. You may not be playing a run and gun type, but that 25 damage resist when moving really helps out when you're being swarmed, and even applies when running backwards.

The game isn't designed for a specialist approach, especially not at higher difficulties. Need to be flexible to adapt your tactics to the situation instead of trying to force your way through with only one approach. Or swallow your pride, play on normal or easy, and play the way you want to play.

Gods its a walk in the park. Why they would leave out all the hardcore options has got me blown away. In a world were survival is key.

Sneaking is soooo easy, for example them tunnels, blow away some raiders and wait 5 seconds to be clear again. Despite tunnels carrying sound more. I notice that the raiders talk and argue about you but wtf.

Well, I suppose I need to stop thinking of this as the next game in the fallout series, then. I've always been able to use a rifle exclusively in fallout games, but now that I know I need to use all sorts of different weapons, I'll work on that.

You can still use single shot weapons, you just need a couple of them, crafted out to be for range. (Using different ammo types)

There is also an ammo perk that will let you pick up additional ammo as well. Stealth detection is turned up a bit high, but it will also decay quite fast as well. If anything it needs to decay slower and not be set off as easily perhaps.

Ammo costs in Fallout 4 are one of the bigger parts of your expenses till the end game, certainly if you have a companion with you. I would go as far as to say automatic weapons are gimped as a result, they need a bit more to drop for the automatic weapons.

An idea for a modded perk could be: Penalty to other types of guns (damage reduction), with the trade off you gain a nice bonus to ammo finding for your main gun type.

Curious this, i am having a blast with the pipe rifle variants and 10mm pistol. Havent used an auto weapon much at all, hardly ever throw a grenade either.
