Dogmeat and I against the world

Its more like Dogmeat against you. I have never come across a more annoying follower. Weak as piss, always in the way, wrecks most sneak attempts and always walking off when trying to access his inventory. Hes lucky hes essential, i would have done away with him.

Sure the animations and blah blah are good, but he has proven hopeless for me. Really disappointed in him, i really do want to like him :/

My experience was complete opposite of yours.

He holds an enemy in place, making it easier to deal with second target in meantime.

When you're in sneak hidden behind corner you can command Dogmeat to run into field of view of closeby enemies. You will remain hidden and be able to get few sneak attacks before anyone will figure out what is going on.

When the enemy hp is at 10-20% he will finish him off.

He cannot die and when he is down you can inject him with steampack, by pressing E. It takes less than 2 seconds for him to get back to action.

Lone Wanderer perk (+50/100 carry weight, -15/30% damage taken) works even when Dogmeat is accompanying you.

Sometimes he will fetch weapons or show you hidden stash out of his own volition.

You can tell him to search the area for items or containers.

He can disarm and fetch mines.

You can make him wear a scarf/dog collar and armor made for raiders dogs.

He can carry almost as much stuff as you can.

He does not kill steal like Codsworth.

My Dogmeat wont wear his armor, idk why. Another -1. It would be all well and good to have him wait while sneaking, if he was in distance to talk to 95% more often.

He really made a nuisance of himself in Cambridge, settings off traps and alarms everywhere. Once i told him to wait, he somehow attracts ghouls to himself and blows the whole show anyway. Not having fun with him it all.

You have to trade with him, select his armor (dog type) and press T (it actually shows as an option in the menu at the bottom of the screen). He won't equip any gear on his own.

You can call him back with E commands (works from a distance). He will come to you like any other dog would do, if you point at a spot next to your leg. Once he's close enough use dialogue options.

He does not trigger mines when he steps on them and I haven't seen him setting off any other traps.

"Go there" command won't make him stay put. You have to enter dialogue and command to "Stay there".

When you are in a sneak mode, he will sneak with you.

Thx for the armor tip. The E command at a distance is an absolute nuisance, fiddly and more time taken then i care to for a follower. He sure as hell sets off the tin can alarm and he broke a tripware that let off a makeshift bomb in Cambridge, first one I seen him do apart from the alarms, here i was thinking they surely made sure he couldnt.

Half the time in sneak mode he is behind me, getting in my way everywhere so i have to jump over him, other half of the time he is away from me.

Its not like i dont want to like him, i still have him with me despite the shortcomings, but i find i have more negative things to say than positive. I sneak more often than not though, carefully assessing my surroundings, so it is probably fair to say my inquisitve role play isnt suited for him. I can see he would make an excellent run and gun partner, he tends to finish off enemies Ive already damaged rather than killing em outright which is probably realistic enough.

Np.

I just made a test and it's impossible for him to trigger wires or scales rigged with explosives.

You can command him to pick up the chain with cans or do it yourself. However I'm not sure if this can alarm nearby enemies - requires more testing.

It's actually very intuitive once you learn how to use it. It's like pointing stuff to your pet, so he gets what you expect of him. Pressing Tab exits command mode. It doesn't take me longer than 1 second to get the dog do what I want. I almost never use dialogue options, unless I require him to find loot for me. Actually I would prefer if it didn't pop up when you press E and your pet is close to you. Would be nice to get a mod for that. If it's not harcoded there might be a way to assign a new key to it.

When I'm sneaking next to the wall he never gets in my way. He is problematic only out of sneak mode. Hell, I'm even able to successfully sneak in power armor with Dogmeat around.

After some more testing, I have figure out how to make him stay in one place even in the middle of the combat when giving commands from affar. Once you move him out of the way with "Go there" command, you can target him and press E second time. This will make him hold position. To change his stance to "Follow" you have to target him and press E twice.

Stands to reason that im not overly fussed with companions, but a dog whistle would be the go. That a quick button to make him walk a distance.

I didnt realise you can disable/take out the tin can alarms, ill have to try that next time. Not sure on the bomb, i havent any lag so ill need to test that. He hasnt set off any previous traps, just one of the shopfronts in Cambridge.
