Tips for starting.

As an assasin/stealth class: Join the morag tong, and do Mephala's quest, poisoning Balyn. Do not go near his front door, enter through the trap door in the roof, or else you'll fail the quest, place all 5 bitter green petals in his cauldron (activate cauldron with all five bitter green petals in your inventory). Mephala will give you the ring of Khajit (Cast Fortify Speed 30 Invisibility 30 seconds). It's great for evading the guards to head to the theives guild to pay (half) off your fine, or just evading the guards in general if you don't feel like paying up. Also, the gondola ramps in Vivec are a great way to improve your sneak skill, the slower you sneak, the less detected you are, the faster your sneak skill will improve. (I'm level 10 and My sneak skill is 80 or there abouts, I think it may be a bit higher)

Other starting tips:

Look around in the tree stumps in Seyda Neen so good stuff to nick in them.

While waiting for Fargoth on the top of the lighthouse jump up and down (improves acrobatics, I normally get 4/5 points out of it) this goes towards a nice high stat modifer strength which is good early on.

Always put a stat point in to luck, you never get a multiplier and its about the only way to max it out at 100. Start this about level 5 ish (the fisrt few levels you need the big stat increases) and you will get to 100. Later if you have it as a favoured attribute.

Save. Lots and often. Prevents huge frustration at CTD's and useful before getting killed/nicking stuff and getting caught.

Sure theres lots of other stuff in previous posts and on UESP, but thats all I can think of now.

I dont like the Ring of Khajiit that much. I recommend to go north of Gnisis and find a lady who wants you to get a ring from a swamp pool. Get the ring and she and her (almost invisible) companion will attack you. After you killed the chamelionized (sp?) guy you can take the Amulet of Shadows from his corpse. After this step the game will be easy (80%chameleon for 60 seconds and a lot of charge).

I believe there's about 4 or 5 tree stumps in and around Seyda Neen that contain items and/or gold. There are also some in and around Hla Oad along with a couple of hidden chests, in fact there's all sorts of stuff hidden away all along the west coast, including a few things on the sea bed! It's amazing what you can find when you take some time to explore.

I have posted elsewhere on how to get a daedric weapon at level one. I see no need to repeat it other than to remind those who may have missed it to use search - if they are interested.

Another useful thing to do on arrival is to collect four varieties of mushroom from Seyda Neen. It speeds up your mages guild quests and gets you an improved disposition with Ajirra. She will buy your unwanted ingredients, so the faster and sooner you do her quests the better IMO.

Since you start out low on money, make sure you steal everything in the Census and Excise office (at least in those rooms with no one in them). Loot all the barrels you can find, too. Don't sell anything until your weight is maxed out, then go to a merchant (like the altmer at the Tradehouse in Seyda Neen). Don't barter since your speechcraft starts low--just take what the guy offers--and sell items one at a time. This may take a while, but each time you accept his price without argument, his disposition towards you goes up a point, and the higher that is, the more money he is willing to offer in exchange for stuff [note--this is temporary and will go back to baseline when you end the conversation, so don't say 'goodbye' til you've sold all your stuff! Also, start with your cheap stuff (the merchants can never offer you less than 1 gp anyways), and then move onto the more expensive stuff (like silver pitchers) once the merchant starts to like you, so you get more in return.] Later when you practice bartering, note that their disposition may actually go *down* if you ask for too much money. This is when it's useful to end the conversation and then start it up afresh--so that the merchant's disposition is back to baseline. Note also that some things automatically lower a merchant's disposition--like carrying skooma and moon sugar--or being part of certain guilds. The merchants in Balmora all began hating me after I joined the Theives Guild, so I had to start selling my stuff elsewhere.

Also another useful tip is to go right away to the Caldera Mages Guild and steal their Master alchemy set, since it's unguarded.
