Forming a modding team, looking for volunteers!

Hi folks,

I'm beginning to form a team of modders interested in working on Fallout 4 projects when the G.E.C.K is released next year, and I'm looking to you guys for volunteers!

The main goal for the team would primarily be the creation of a high-quality small to medium DLC-sized mod - theme and content of which would be decided by the team. Additionally, the team would be an excellent resource for modders to create smaller projects with the support and assistance of other members, potentially released under the banner of the group for name recognition and exposure.

For a project of this scope, we'll be needing team members of all talents, including;

  • 2D + 3D Artists
  • Scripters
  • Level Artists/Designers
  • Voice Actors

We already have upwards of ten people of many varied talents interested, so come and join us. Please reply with any skills and experience you think would be valuable to the project!

Before you start worrying that I'm looking for a bunch of people to make a mod for me, here's a little about myself!:

I'm the leader of a large, comprehensive modding project for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat - S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Wormwood that's been in production for several years. I have extensive experience through this project and over my time at university successfully managing projects and am currently seeking a role as a Producer in the games industry. I have also done a lot of level design work including (most relevantly) a time working on the Skyrim mod 'Luftahraan'.

I welcome any questions and discussion and hope that we can create some excellent content together!

You kind of lost me at 'DLC-sized' as that is usually what people say right before everything blows up... Well, that an when people say '30+ hours of gameplay'. I become very cautious when people say phrases like that.

But I am slightly curious, so I will shoot you a private message soon.

Speaking from experience, aim to start with something small, and build on top of it. No-one knows what the future brings.

I'll be honest, Beacon...seems quite odd to try to form a team to create something that you haven't actually even decided on yet.

I don't know, but you really come off as a game development recruiter more than a mod author. In my eyes, mods are created to change the game towards an experience that the author wants to play. What kind of experience are you looking to make? You say you have multiple people already on the team...what do they wish to make?

All that said, I am curious to see what you guys do...but the way you are coming off leaves me very cautious about joining.

Hey, thanks for your reply - I'll reply to your PM tomorrow when I get a bit of time! But as a quick reply, I'm not saying we create a 30+ hour piece of content. Like I said, small to medium DLC-sized could be anywhere from an hour to thirty - it's a general guide to get across that we're not looking to create a project like SkyWind, etc.

Speaking from experience, aim to start with something small, and build on top of it. No-one knows what the future brings.

I know this more than most, trust me. We're not looking to create a new game, and not having a specific direction we need to go in gives us the flexibility to adapt.

Could you give any concrete details about the direction of your project?

Right now, we don't have a specific direction we want to take. Right now the idea is to get together a group of capable content creators, discuss the possibilities and then work together to create something. If this is too early for anyone who's less than convinced to join a project like this, that's fine!

As someone who's been working on a very specific passion project for five years, it's refreshing for me to be able to have an open mind to the kind of content I'm going to create, participating in a discussion with other passionate modders as to exactly what we want to work on. Because of the early stage of the modding scene for the game and the lack of tools, we have time to discuss and think about the experience we'd like to create. I personally have several smaller world-modification projects already in mind, but like I said, I'm open to working on any larger ideas anyone else has.

Let me know if anyone has any more questions.

I'll have to agree with the others here that some sort of direction is ideal. Even a vague one. Otherwise, people don't know what exactly they're getting into, and is just generally bad form.

Basically it sounds like they are getting into a discussion. Kind of like joining a democracy where you aren't quite sure what is going to be decided as of yet.

I don't think that is a bad way to go about things. Get people talking and hopefully come up with a few common goals, and for those who decide they don't like the consensus, they aren't forced to stay.

Not the direction I am going, but an interesting idea.

The idea of a 'Modding Confederation' interests me, where everyone agrees on certain things and works toward the good of the group, but are still independent and able to pursue their own dreams. Not saying it would work, just the idea is intriguing.

Yeah, that's pretty much it right now. We're beginning to suggest ideas and discuss them, and eventually we'll decide on something and those who want to can work on the main project, others are free to leave or work on their own projects under the banner of the group with assistance from anyone who'd like to help.

Are you going to schedule some sort of Skype chatroom or something so everyone can meet on one certain day and discuss things in real time?

I would have been more interested in this 3 months ago, but after having 200+ pages written and all my characters concepted and modeling started, I am well past the point of no return when it comes to my mod. I am stuck on this path for better or worse.
