1.3 Beta Patch and CTD issues, possable solution

So I downloaded the beta patch and like a lot of other people I couldn't load a save.

The launcher would fire normally, and I could start loading a save but right when the game would come up, poof CTD.

After checking around I saw others post that a mods textures was, or could cause the crash, so I left all mods active but moved my texture folder to my desktop.

Whoot it loaded fine.

So I returned the texture file and started removing textures one at a time till the game loaded.

It not one certain mod causing it because the posts found referenced a mod I never used or downloaded.

For me the offender was Eye's of Perfection.

I was curious if it was all the eye textures or just one causing the crash so I started testing by adding one single eye texture back, at a time.

My cuprite was the eyebrown_n.dds texture. The mod worked fine and the game loaded until I added that texture back.

If you are using this mod, and getting a CTD try removing that single texture file and hopefully it will work for you to.

To everyone else having a CTD after installing the beta (and has the patience to test it one at a time) try removing all your textures( DONT delete them just move them out of the data file while you test), and then adding them back one mod at a time, once your offender is found, try and see if it's just one texture that's causing your problem.

With luck you'll be like me and find its just one texture you can remove, and still keep the mod active.

I just finished fixing almost the same issue, except with a different file. I also have the Eyes of Perfection mod, but that file wasn't the culprit for me. It was roofmetal03_d.dds but I'm not sure what mod it was from. So for me, my game didn't crash until those textures were loaded in upon going into a certain part of the map. I suspect that your issue is exactly the same except that your save was in a location where the texture had to be loaded in upon loading in (either you or an NPC near you had brown eyes).

But basically my situation was exactly the same as yours. Including that I discovered it after reading about textures causing crashes on the forums and the way I fixed it.

Here's the methodology I used, in case people experiencing a similar issue wish to replicate it:

1. With the textures removed, I went to the location that caused my game to CTD and saved. That way I could load the game and immediately know.

2. 30 at a time, I put the files back in and started my game. If that batch didn't cause a CTD they would be placed in the "safe" folder.

3. The second batch crashed my game and they were placed in an "unsafe" folder.

4. The third and final batch did not crash my game and were placed into the "safe" folder.

4. I started placing the "unsafe" files in at larger amounts, then smaller and smaller amounts, until I had narrowed down which file had the issue.

So if you want to repeat it:

1. For me, this didn't CTD on loading the save, but instead in a specific region of the map. What I did was I removed the "Textures" folder and went to the area that I CTD, and saved my game there so I could load it up and know right away if it's still an issue.

2. Narrow down which folder in "Textures" is causing the issue. No need to do them one at a time at first.

3. Narrow down which files in that folder are causing the issue. Start with large batches of files and narrow them down. Put the "safe" files in a separate folder and don't load them in so they don't get mixed up.

I'm still unsure about what causes the issue, though. What's different about this texture that crashes the game? If anyone finds out, please do share.

This is getting ridiculous.

I had a random CTD prior to this patch that was related to "toaster.dds" that (I assume) was part of the GraFix Overhaul mod. Removed it and everything was fine.

Now we have the two posters above with random texture files causing a CTD. I tried both by the way and it didn't cure my CTD with the new patch, yet when I revert back everything is fine.

The mod author of GraFix overhaul said there was nothing weird or out of the ordinary with that file which would cause a CTD.

So the real question is, why are these texture mods suddenly causing a CTD when they weren't before? I can't recall a single instance of a CTD caused by a texture in Skyrim or previous Fallouts... it always seemed to be .esp related, at least in my experience.

What is going on? It seems to be unpredictable and random at this point, like patches are corrupting texture files? I wish someone would get to the bottom of this nonsense.

Just got news of the new beta update. Decided to give it a go and of course CTD upon loading a save... *sigh*

I've got about 85 texture mod's I gotta sort through to figure out which ones are causing my CTD's.

I'll keep an eye on this post and update as I find culprits, I probably won't have time to figure out

if it's a single texture file in a certain mod tonight but i'll try and make time in the coming days.

List of mods that cause CTD's for me so far

1.Gore Overhaul (as stated above)

2.Pre-Apocalyptic Walls for sanctuary (specifically PAW with Leaves) Not sure if the regular PAW will cause CTD but i'm betting it will.

(Edit)

That did not take nearly as long as I thought it would, and surprisingly only Gore Overhaul was a

problem for me. I haven't extensively tested though, I pretty much just installed a few mods at a

time, loaded a save, fast traveled to a few locations and ran around for a few minutes. It is possible

that a texture that would have caused a CTD got overwritten for me but I only have a few mods

witch overwriting textures. I've never had a perfectly stable game and would get crashes on occasion

during a 4+ hour session but I can't expect total stability with 210+ mods.

(Edit)

Well that didn't last very long... So Pre-Apocalyptic Walls for sanctuary with leaves caused me to CTD

at the super mutant camp near Bunker Hill (The camp where water is on the first floor/basement level

and it's a building that seems to be under construction) Gonna keep playing for about another hour

then off to bed. Will play more tomorrow.

Updated to the newest beta patch when I got home from work today.

Been playing for a few hours now, with no ill effects.

So far it looks like this patch is safe, at least for me.

Will try returning the eyebrown_n.dds texture tomorrow and see if its stable now or not, don't really want to meddle with it tonight.

EDIT: Correction I cant enter power armor, even after removing the textures I still cant, will have to work on troubleshooting that tomorrow I guess.

Also while I was at it, I tried eyebrown, and it still produces a CTD for me as well. So the update to the beta didn't fix anything involving the texture thing after all.

So that's the sudden issue then. Ever since I patched to 1.3 I've had really odd crashes. Never had a single CTD before the beta patch, and all of a sudden it's CTD galore! But as someone mentioned above; how can a select few texture swaps cause CTD's all the sudden?! That's just plain weird. It was always .esp/.esm related in previous games! Can't really wrap my mind around how that's changed. Oh well... nevermind. I guess I'll just remove every single texture pack I'm using until a more stable version comes out, or until the authors have patched their textures.

Well, thanks for clearing this up for me. I was sitting and going through all my gameplay-changing .esp's until just now. Tried disabling them all, but the CTD's just kept going.

Can you list your mods installed? I would like to know your entire list and compare mine. It would be good to see what texture mods are causing the damn crashes. Wonder if Beta Patch changed some of the texture names. If so we need to figure out which ones and see if we can fix it.

I uninstalled Gore Overhaul as well but when I did quest for institute for Mass Fusion quest I got instand CTD after being teleported from Institute to location. Even with Gore Overhaul uninstalled I still got CTD. I hear though there are people who are crashing at specific places in game that don't even have mods installed. So that should be a warning sign right there.

Here is another texture to the list. This one was causing me to CTD around Malden.

Mod: Female Vaultsuit simple recolor-Black

Texture: vaultsuit111_d.dds

Tomorrow I'll edit my original post with a list of the texture's and if they where posted what mods they are in to help others find which ones may be causing them the trouble faster.
