On the Subject of Dismemberment

It's "BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!!!" In WarHammer, Khorne The Blood God is the architect of many wars, inspiring warriors to kill, kill, and kill some more because Khorne feeds upon war and slaughter. A warrior who gives in to bloodlust makes themself vulnerable to Khorne's whisperings, and if they succomb, they become a Khorne beserker, an insane, blood soaked warrior who exists only to spill blood in the name of the blood god. Khorne's fallen Berserkersyell "BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD! SKULLS FOR THE SKULL THRONE!" whenever they enter battle, typicaly armed wiht chainsaw-bladed axes or bare, clawed hands.

As for gore-I too hope it's well visualised. I do love a good gory mess, and I was a huge fan of the Bloody Mess perk in Fallout. I did greatly enjoy being able to blast people apart armed only with a CX4. I want something similar as a perk here, a "BLOOD FOR DAGON!" or similar that makes killed enemies disintegrate in fountains of red.

@Vindekarr: Oh well we can easily predict we will be able to perform a bloodlust thirster who worship a blood god if we want. There should be a lots of blood needed for you that's sure.

Jim: you see to have the opposite opinion to every one of mine, I like that a lot. Means we both end up with better honed ideas as a result, though I will probably eventualy kill you.

I really liked DA-2's stupid gore, it was the only interesting thing about the game. Bloody Mess however was absolutely spot on, ands Dawn Of War II is also about perfect for my morbid tastes. (You seen the new Carnifex synch-kill yet? epic. and gory. Very gory.)

I want Bloody Mess Cyrodiil edition. But I also want it to be weapon-specific.

Look at it this way: I favour a big two handed weapon, typicaly a double-handed scythe. Huge gore makes sense for that, it's 2 metres long and it'll make a big mess when it hits someone 'cuz it'll chop right through 'em. A dagger however shouldnt chop arms off, it's a dagger. It should do epic bleeds instead. Bloodgieser! Maces and hammers, another of my faves(when Im not wielding one of my huge scythes I have a mace/sword akimbo) are the hardest of all. They dont rip chunks out of people, but I think they should be able to crunch up the bones.

Idealy you'd do a WarHammer and add a special "kill-gore" effect set in adition to the more normal "hit-gore" Maces\Hammers should make a lovely squelchy crunch, like smashing a crispy shelled watermelon with a sledgehammer. Crispy outside crunch with wet, slimey, squidgy squelch within. Like a chocolate eclair of slaughter. Swords, axes, scythes(please can there be scythe, I love scythes, great weapon) should do dismemberment. Spears, daggers and rapiers should do bleeds/stabbing, and maces and hammers should do "crunch-splat-drip-drip-drip"

I also would like to see gore stick to my weapon for longer, for god's sake I just slaughtered a guy with a scythe the size of a motorbike, why is it clean?

The world would be a very dull place if we all liked the same things.

I prefer over the top physics to exploding enemies, paralysing someone at the top of a flight of stairs in Oblivion or driving over the bridges in Saints Row 2 on the pavement launching the poor NPCs high into the air.

I'm hoping for the lack of dismemberment... Here's why... Modability.

Dismemberment was one thing that made rigging and creating new body meshes a royal pain in the ass. It's one of the reasons why you see almost no mods which add skeleton armor to the game, and is one reasons why the variety of clothing and armor mods for FO3/NV tends to be lacking despite the fact that a contemporary setting would allow so much without breaking lore.

In the case of Fallout, there are also many times when you just don't want parts flying off of a target, or don't want them liquefying just because you hit someone hard enough. Deadly reflexes did add something wanted in Oblivion, but being able to just walk up to someone and lop off their head with a special move regardless of what level, health, or equipment they had often ruined what might have otherwise been an epic fight against an opponent who would normally be stronger than you. In contrast, FO3's system of locational damage was too lacking and made it unrealistic when you were unloading a Gatling gun into someone's face and it takes them 2-3 minutes to even flinch. There simply isn't a good way to do it and still have opponents who are challenging without making it all arbitrary.

Well in Fallout you also had some truewly gibtacular guns too.

Im a MASSIVE WarHammer fanboy, and so I went full-out fanboy, a set of Kasrkin armour, and a Bolter/Chainsword. Alas that these were so messy that even I found myself a little bored. See, a Bolter is a bit like a rifle, but it fires a truly dire projectile. A Bolt is literaly a minute version of a howitzer round, rocket-assisted for accuracy and self stabilisation, but also explosive tipped. My Baal-pattern Boltgun, though it looked lovely and had a truly gorgeus Deus Encarmine on the barrel shroud, turned everyone into a red paste in a single thudding shot. Gore is fun, but not when every single bullet you fire, from your pistol no less, causes the target to be ripped limb from limb. I also had a Deathwing Terminator Marine as my alt, and he was just so OP I deleted him. A Terminator wears a vast suit of power armour, and carries a Storm Bolter, a dual barreled, higher-calibre Bolter with a firwe rate of 2600 rounds per minute. Nothing could survive even one. http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Bolter Point, splat.

In Oblivion I think gore should only be an on-kill thing. It's just too impractical to have dismemberment in-combat, though I think that having the ability to see yourt slain victim riopped to bloody pulp with some over the top "finish him!" moments on bosses would be EPIC!. Ya'know, Mortal Kombat style, that worked. It just, WORKED. ANd some of them were hilarious, like the one with the cake...

Bottom line is, as Vagrant pointed out, gore inm combat is quite impractical, and would be best left as a finishing mechanic. Me though, I'd rather have no gore at all than gore that causes nothing but problems. Like gore in Black Ops, it just looks moronic, and whenever I picked up my customary FAL marksperson's rifle, so many bits went everywhere that it became almost impossible to see if I'd scored a killshot or just taken his thumb off. I mean, for god's sake, I one shot a guy in what would have been his little toe, and his whole leg flew off above the knee!
