where to start?

I am a huge Morrowind fan and just this week began Oblivion. I have all my mods running and a male khajit assassin/thrifty type character. I just exited the sewers and have no idea where to start. I want to do the main quest last.

Could someone give me a recommendation for a quest line to begin with? Something fairly easy to get me started? Sneak and blade were my favored skills in the sewers.

In Morrowind everything just seemed to begin in Balmora. I just don't know where to start.

Thanks so much

Suzy

Well, personally if you have gameplay changing mods (i.e. Thieves Arsenal etc.), you might want to disable them for your first playthrough. You should endevour to experience vanilla Oblivion as much as you can, before throwing some mods up.

However, to answer your question:

You can try doing the Thieve's Guild questline. It is definitely my favourite line of quests, and I usually keep it till last because of this, but you might want to try it. After that, the Dark Brotherhood is always good. Oddly enough, there seems to be a lot more sneaking involved than in Thieve's Guild (though only in the earlier quests).

The Thieve's Guild really gives you a good feel of the gameplay. After the initial quests, you'll be required to Fence certain amounts of gold. Depending on your morality, you may or not only steal from the rich, but as long as you try stealing in different ways, you'll get experience in breaking in and entering people's homes, or else, sneaking through restricted areas of castles, or when to pickpocket various people.

Thanks so much. My mods consist of a couple of houses, prettier potion bottles, stuff like that. No added quests or gamechangers. It's overwhelming enough like it is!

Thanks. :)

The Fighters Guild or Thieves Guild would arguably (sp?) be the easiest but based on your character I would agree with Myriss and recommend either the Thieves Guild or Dark Brotherhood.

EDIT: Although

The ending of the Dark Brotherhood is extremely disappointing, I'll say no more about it.

Personally, I think you should wander around a bit, explore houses and inns and do a few side quests first. If you want to start out with some money and fame head to the arena in the Imperial City, and go into the bloodworks and do a few rounds. Every arena fight you win gives you 1 fame point, and the more fame you have the more quests open up for you. Personally I like to stay way from the fighters guild until I'm a higher level, not because its hard but because the rewards are better, same with the main quest. (trust me, wait to do the main quest until about level 20, then you get access to a powerful ring, ironically named the "mundane ring" half way through the story line.

Okay I found one sidequest involving a crooked shopkeeper in the Imperial City. I would also like to explore a cave if I can find one. I read something about the leveled loot being a big deal in Oblivion. That kind of discourages exploring. I don't want to miss out on something great because. I ran across it too soon.

Recommendations for good areas to explore early on besides the cities are appreciated. I've explored 3 cities do far. You are right- great fun just to walk around and talk to people

Thanks to everyone who has responded. The advice is going to really help me enjoy the start of my game. :)

On your first play through I wouldn't worry about leveled loot lists. There are so many magical items and ways to make them that worrying about a particular one isn't worth the trouble and you won't miss it. The first thing I usually do is the Mages Quest. You have to get a recommendation from each city before you can enter the one in the Imperial City. You can't make custom spells without access to that area so it's important if you like magic. It also has alters for enchanting weapons. It's a good place to start because you get to go to every city and usually each city throws one or two quests at you while your at it. I tend to knock out a few fighters guild quests as well. Edited by csgators
