Essential mods?

I'm starting my first playthrough of Fallout 4 (certainly not the last.) I'm a total mod addict, but for this run I would like to keep the game as vanilla as possible.

My question is, are there any mods that I just HAVE to have even for a "pure" sort of plathrough? I'm talking about things like lowered weapons and extended dialogue, fixes and patches, basically things that improve what's already there instead of adding new features or items. Things that make you go "why was that not in there to begin with?"

So in your opinion, which mods are essential even for a first "pure" playthrough?

Thank you!

I'm playing the game for the first time so I want to keep it as close to vanilla as possible.

For visuals I use:

  • Ponytail Hairstyles by Azar
  • TRUE EYES - Fallout 4 Edition
  • CBBE (w bodyslide)
  • Better Weapon Mod Descriptions
  • hide helmets

Actual changes:

  • Expanded Ballistic Weave (Allows you to use ballistic weave (if you don't know what this is you can install it as you get to that point in the game and it will make sense) on ALL clothes instead of the select few that Bethesda picked for you. This allows you late game with any piece of armor you like.

These are what made my experience much better without having any impact on gameplay balance.

I also use Crafting workbenches, but that is a more impactful change as it allows you to craft things you would not normally be able to craft. I added it because I got to late game and got lazy. totally unecessary though.

Well, for me probably the one thing I've done/found so far that I don't think I can ever play again without is modding the jetpack stats in the .ini and using a fusion core mod so you can get a lot more out of the jetpack. This game has a lot more going on in a vertical way than previous games...so like jumping up on buildings and such is far more useful than in the past. It's also just a lot of fun.

I also use a mod that quiets down generators and turrets. This is a pretty significant improvement.

I use the Classic VATS mod. Sorry, I just don't like the slow motion VATS.

And I use an unlimited settlement building mod. That one is pretty essential.

Sorry, but despite what you imply, the True Storms weather mod is essential to a 'vanilla' playthru in my opinion. Beth includes 'weather' but it is lame and incompetent (who would have thought). There is good reason this mod rates so highly- and it brings back to the game something that should have been there in the first place.

My absolute fav moments in the game have been when experiencing action in the midst of a stunning storm.

I don't like slo mo anything. Again, a personal preference, not essential as the op requests.

Action rpg's should move quickly.

I use this mod for VATS, it eliminates the slo mo.

Not gonna lie, I skim read the OP. My bad. I answered "essential" as "don't wanna play without".
