[WIPz] Thor's Hammer

The texture is far from being finished but here is the current status which is a base coat and ambient occlusion. I just finished painting over the visible seams using Blender 2.5's texture cloning as noted here in Tip #2: Removing Texture Seams. You might be wondering why I am touching this model with 2.5 when I need to be using 2.49 to export. Simple really. I did all the modeling in 2.49 and just opened it up in 2.5 in order to utilize the texture tools which means I won't be saving the model in 2.5....just the texture.

The next item on my texture list is the entangled pattern that looks like spaghetti.

Normally, this would have been finished by now but I'm only getting a few minutes at a time to mess with it throughout the day (about 1 hour total so far)

Added the engraving and ended up modifying the UV a little bit...which meant having to re-create the ambient occlusion. Also tweaked the existing textures a bit more.

Next on my texture list is the texture details such as the engraved lines and worn edges. After that will be overall color and brightness tweaking. Then normal and glow maps. Final step is to get it into the game and make additional adjustments based on what it looks like in-game with lighting applied.

I'm dropping the animated textures for now.

Are you planning on making the loop more.. loop-like? It looks a bit on the boxy side right now. I remember WoW had a weapon where the dangling string on the hilt was set to follow the camera (Forgot the name.. Tracking?), and it worked pretty well. That or you could make it rounded out more. Or maybe it's just the angle I see it from.

Modifying the leather strap will be the very last step because I will actually have two different versions with one needing to be set much more different than the one being held.

As for the graphic plane that constantly points down and faces towards the player, I know about it but I don't think it would look very good.

EDIT: Finished the misc. details. Here is the 2nd render. The symbol in the middle will exist only in the normal map when done...maybe in the glowmap as well...don't know until I see how it looks in-game.

I modified the trinity symbol in the center to be smaller and less visible...actually completely invisible at some angles and faintly visible at others. That was a fun effect to perfect. :)

I am trying to re-do the symbol carvings on the edges by hand. The one I scraped off an image just doesn't sit well with me. And depending on how well I do it, the carving data may only exist in the normal map and maybe just some shadow detail in the diffuse texture...we'll see. Here is what I'm doing and how far I got tonight.

EDIT: Finished engraving part...now I just need to incorporate it into the finished texture.

Fun fact: I took images with my iPhone of the extremely large Thor hammer display at the theater.
