tomomi1922
Because of all the ash piles that never go away, I try my best to sensor all energy weapons from settlers and companions. But now I am playing with a laser rifle at the workshop, it's so fun. I wonder if it is safe to use laser weapons yet so that the ash piles will properly clean up like dead corpses? Please say yes! I read it has been a bug since Skyrim (and yes those persistent ash piles). So the settlement is where my concern should be. That is a big easier to work with. Moraelin
Well, if anyone is worried about ash piles in settlements, the most obvious workaround would be to use the mod that disables settlement attacks. (Don't forget to disable any other mod that touches those with a ten foot polearm, like adding notifications or whatnot.) Then you don't have to shoot lasers anywhere near a settlement, except maybe when you first found it. So basically you can run around using lasers without worry. Moksha8088
Maybe once the Unified Fallout Patches (UFLOP) are made a year and a half from now, these rudimentary problems can be corrected.

You see, when an area is allowed to reset fully, every placed item in the cell resets. So it may be a bigger problem.
tomomi1922
I've been using laser turrets in my settlements since day one, haven't noticed any lingering ash piles. Lucky you. Each and every time I had NPCs died with an ash piles, it remains for days that I have to manually clean up with disable/enable/markfordelete method. It's annoying because I may accidentally delete wrong things. Most of these early NPC attacks are nothing but self spawned targets for testing. My save is written 7 hours + now, and the ash piles in Sanctuary are still there when I had them since as early as 20 minute into this game. I purposely left them there to see when they will disappear. It's probably about a month already in game time. Well, if anyone is worried about ash piles in settlements, the most obvious workaround would be to use the mod that disables settlement attacks. I don't know about you, but I have a lot of fun now after I got my Settlement raiding mod that I can call out real raiding parties against my settlement. And hard mode is very scary too, thanks to the author. Starlight Drive in is where I house all my companions. I built a rather fortified wooden complex there (wood or concrete, FO4 cannot break them, thus it's fortified in game). I tried Institute hard mode, and I literately faced 100+ synth stormtroopers and they seem to use grenades... not to explode, but as a form of teleporter. They throw grenade, more synth teleport in from where the grenade launch. My roof top (even I lock the stair) was swamped with Synth. That was one great experience, even frame rate was down to some 10fps (even on GTX 970). So it will be very sad if I can't have people raiding my settlement. I just had to stay ballistic, nothing remotely close to energy, and no ash pile so far. That means minigun turret is my default turret. I am a bit skeptical with mass damage like Fatman turret or missile launcher. Would this hurt (and kill) settlers too?
Moraelin
Unless you changed that with some mod (and yes, at least one mod exists that changes that), all settlers (but not Minutemen) are essential. They can have a mutie suicider whack them upside the head with a nuke, and it just knocks them on their butt. I'd be wary of turrets, or at least mind their placement, though, because they can break stuff that can be broken. A single missile turret can obliterate a crop field, if some legendary raider starts running around your crops and taking cover behind the picket fence. Mind you, ALL turrets. I had a raider take cover near my big power generator, and a laser turret shot the generator full of holes. Generator goes broken, all turrets stop working right there
TheOriginalEvilD
One thing I have noticed is ash piles don't always show up immediately after a fight. I'll be looting bodies and come walking back around to a spot I was JUST at and now there's an ass pile when it wasn't there just seconds earlier.
