The Nature of Time

Haha...that's optimism for ya.... we will eventually understand time and uncover the secret of the universe. lol

Then the universe will change all the questions. Either that, or it will simply end. :D

Bugt we've known the secret of the universe, and the question since 1978.

The answer is 42, and the question is "what is 7x7?"

But seriously, the question about fluidity of time is a valid an necessary one Im glad was raised, since I overlooked it entirely. Is time only as real as we perceive? There's a story ascribed to Einstein as he was trying to explain relativity to a lay-person, and he said "5 seconds holding a hot coal feels like eternity. 5 seconds Kissing a pretty girl feels like only an instant."

I would think that if this is true, and time exists only in how we see it, that as we are tied to the 3 dimensions, time would be a function of them, maybe?

And thanks all. I love these conversations, but being a shut-in, have had no one to have them with.

I always thought there was something fundamentally wrong with the universe. :D

I agree with Einstein. I think time is merely perception based...... as the old adage "my how time flies when you are having fun" is oh-so-true. Similarly, nothing seems to make time drag on forever like boredom.....

We will always be here for ya to pique your mind. :D

Actually I've already figured it out, just haven't told anyone yet. You guys seem cool tho so I'll let you in on a secret...... Dark Energy is Time.

DUNDUNDUNDUNDUUUUUUN haha. :D

Edit: Holy Crap I just googled that and it's actually a real theory. I was only kidding I had no idea it was feasible.... wow,....,

Well, its taken several years and tons of experimentation, but they have found sub-atomic particles (I forget the name) that go faster than the speed of light.

So, speed is distance over time.

You can have zero distance over time (hover)

It's claimed that the closer one gets to the speed of light, the slower time goes. Does this mean that light from the sun, taking 8 seconds to reach us, has only aged 4 seconds?

And, does going faster than the speed of light mean one can go backwards in time? Or just that one becomes younger; ie: for every hour of normal time, at FTL, you become an hour younger?

Just remember that according to time cop that the same matter can't be in the same place twice at the same time or you'll explode.

Trying to sound intelligent I postulate that time does not have a nature -

President John Henry Eden in Star Trek Generations says that "Time is the fire in which we burn" - Pickles would have us believe it is our constant companion.

I'll say this much - it is without question every mortal creatures most precious commodity - it's why I'm a hedonist, it may pass quicker this way but it's far to precious to waste.

One of the things that prompted me to post is that, if time is a function of the other three dimensions, then one shouldnt really be able to go any direction but "forward". In our 3D models everything moves "forward", relative to itself and its perception, even if the units we use to measure that movement suggest another direction. Which is how we see time; for all you know, you could be going backwards, sideways, heck, even cork-screw, but without a reference point to compare, how do you know?

Whereas if time is actually a separate (or parallel or some of the other great ideas here) dimension, then (at least in theory) we should be able to move different directions in it, and know we did so.

If we survive long enough maybe some of that mass of extra brain capacity we have will be used for just that - changing direction and being aware of what we were doing.......

The question would be why?

My tiny mind can only envisage the chaos that would ensue.

I'd take immortaility over being able to time travel - that way I'd get to see what Fallout 954 is like and Android v Alien Football Manager 2752 even though it's only 2751.

Sunshinenbrick makes a great point. Moving forward in time, politicians only get wo0rse. So, in theory, if you moved backwards, maybe they'd only get better?

We'd have to travel all the way back to 1964 before we got to a non-despotic U.S. president. Reagan and his coattails do not qualify.

This makes much more sense to me than the idea that time is a 'dimension' or 4th 'direction' in so-called 'space-time' that is 'traveled'. My interpretation of this is that time is an emergent phenomena of an eternal, evolving, 'now'.
