Emry, albeit I am Agnostic, I would like to say that I was baptised Episcopalian. I just wanted to make this statement because it is good to see some one who believes in God make their argument heard. I think that your idea's on Faith and Religion are correct. However, I would want to add my 2 cents as well. To quote the movie 'Dogma' Religion should be an idea, not a belief, because people die and people kill in the name of 'beliefs'.

I fail to understand your point. Reality doesn't care if you like it or not. Actually, you prove one of my points quite nicely. You, and many others, don't like the idea that death is the end. So you have a psychological need to believe in god. Its a comforting idea that a nice afterlife is waiting for you, but if that's the only reason you believe it, you're just blinding yourself to the truth.

Ok, so the existence of an afterlife is a nicer end than just nonexistence. But how does that make it true? If I jump out this window it would be nicer if gravity doesn't exist, but I'd just get a nice introduction to the fact that reality doesn't care what I want. If you want to believe in something to avoid looking at an unpleasant reality, fine, but don't try to argue that your "reality" actually exists.

Yes, just like every other sane person. I'd love for there to be an afterlife where I spend eternity in absolute happiness. But just because I want it, doesn't affect the facts in any way. And such "arguements" are irrelevant in a debate. If you're going to say there's an afterlife in a debate, you need to provide evidence for your claims or you're not debating.

To clarify my point about this theme:

I do believe there is a life after death, but you can't really know.

You say it's a psycologically need, and I must say that it is a very good point you, and many others has made. But, you can't prove the opposite, that it is not true, hence; the discussion will never end or make a winner. Only those who are dead can relly know.

If Santa did exist it life would be easier because then I didn't have to go round the shops to buy presents for my kids. :bleh:

So what is your point? That there has to be an afterlife because you can't imagine that there should be nothing after death?

I completely agree with Peregrine on that point - IMO religions were invented to fulfil a need within humans to give their existence meaning and purpose. It's much nicer to believe that you were chosen especially to play your part in the grand design of some deity's masterplan than to acknowledge that you are simply a product of chance mutations and statistics in a universe which has no purpose.
