AeonsLegend
In terms of rewards it doesn't really matter what you do. The main reason for doing this quest is the charisma bobblehead. The weapon Jack gives you is useless. The serum is kind of useless. You can only own one at a time. You can get a whole bunch of them before the end of the quest and you won't use many of them anyway. I never found the need to use any of those serums. RelicDuDe
I'm only 2 years older than you, sadly my meds slow me down enough to make power armour "a good thing". I'm thinking of having a second play through soon, but I'm not really looking forward to being weak again, with c**p weapons. I have a tendancy to forget that I'm not the only "old fart" (no offence) playing these games. People keep telling me that I'm too old for games. I keep telling them to F**k off. Look at what i wrote under my posts... its true. i am an old timer in gaming, and proud of it. Many a time i out-shoot teenagers in on-line L4D... that's saying something. when they ask, and I'm telling them my age... they go : "Oh wow., you are really 60-yo ?... cant believe it..;) BTW,, among other meds, i use 8 mg of Lorazepam a day... (Google it if you like) it should slow my reflexes, should't it ?... well, if it does.. i really want to know what i'd be able to do when i wont take them...;) If you like putting on power armor and go all rambo on raiders.. be my guest.. to each his/her play style. I'm just saying...

Take one.. and you don't need power armor in the glowing sea... also.. very handy for fighting Ferral ghouls.
AeonsLegend
The only time I'm ever in trouble with radiation is when fighting Children of Atom. On high difficulty they hit you with 150+ dmg each hit. Painful. If you need a shot to run across the glowing sea then you can simply use one of the ten you get for free. No need to choose a specific route during the Cabot mission. Feral Ghouls don't hit hard with radiation. I have enough radiation resist on my armor and perks to nullify most of their damage. That and the perk that allows you to heal radiation from sunlight make Ghoul attacks even on the highest difficulty laughable.
GnatGoSplat
I sided with Jack because I cheated and read the Wiki and saw Lorenzo is a creep. I managed to end up with 5 vials of Mysterious Serum anyway. Tried it once, wasn't that exciting, but I was already at pretty high level when I started this quest and only have difficulty on High so I'm practically invincible anyway. I'm never too worried about radiation, I had hundreds of Radaway before I started selling it off for caps.
bladexdsl
on the mission to get the serum from the raiders if your CHAR is high enough you can lie and say it was all destroyed and keep it than too.

I agree, unless you get ambushed by a load of them dark feral ghouls, while in the glowing sea... no armor can help you there. it will reduce it, but unless you pop rad-away like candy, you will die. the serum will not prevent you from getting radiated, but i will heal you rather fast from it. I have not tried it against the children of atom yet.. somehow i haven't met them while on the serum... perhaps i should go wipe out the nice little settlement they have along the coast... and see what happens...;)
