sisgolden
Short Story: How about adding "Steam Verification" on new registration webpage? Long story:I'm releasing my mod on the Internet and I got some PMs from 'pirates'.IIRC, I also got almost same PM via nexusmods PM system.I know nexusmods.com blockes these 'pirates', so how about adding this system to kick out them harshly? > 1. User add his/her ID when registering.New registration page example:----------------------------Please enter your Steam ID number: [ 7xxxxxxxxxxxxxx ]Please select what you wish to access on this nexus: [ Fallout 4 [V]] > 2. Your server make a GET connection to Steam:https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/7xxxxxxxxxxxxxx/screenshots/?appid=377160(appid will change) If "Fallout 4" is exist, return true;elseif connection failed, return false;else false; > 3. Nexusmods: "ID Verified, thanks for registering" or "Buy it now." Benefit:1. It's easily to track nexusmods' user by looking at "Steam ID", which is not easy to change.2. It's easy to ban illegal users from the nexusmods(e.g., re-registered pirate). What do you think? Edited March 5, 2016 by sisgolden
TheVampireDante
Not every game we game host files for is steam linked, and making such a requirement would be asking for far too much anyway.
JimboUK
What about those with their accounts set to private?
ZZZ02
Not sure about this I liked that before I signed up I could at least download a few mods as like a "try before you buy" deal. I am usually VERY leery with sites that are like "you must sign up or provide blank before you can even look".
budrick007
I prefer identifying and prosecuting pirates. This might be possible if Nexus were willing to take on the role of traffic cop. Nexus could put a non-disruptive encrypted footprint in every download. This footprint would identify the downloaders ID, the Date/Time of the Download, the uploader of the mod and the author of the mod. Any MOD which showed up on a pirate site could be identified by the footprint, the downloader identified and prosecuted.
bben46
The Nexus is not the internet police. Doing the kind of things you suggest would mean having to spend money we would rather use for improving the site to instead hire lawyers and use our staff to spend their time identifying and tracking down pirates instead of running the site. Most of the time banning is sufficient punishment. Most of the pirates we encounter are kiddies without enough money to bother with taking to court. Prosecuting pirates is not a profitable way to use site funds as many are kiddies without money, or are in rogue countries that don't cooperate with pirate prosecutions. Not even the US Dept of Justice (DOJ) bothers unless prodded by a big corporation. And even then the only one that profits is that big corporation while the taxpayers loose big time on the deal.
