REQUEST - Need help with tutorials converted to WIKI

TES Articles (142) (63)

FO3 Articles (125) (120)

NV Articles (25) (1)

DA Articles (38) (Conversion Complete!)

I would like to start a project to convert all existing Nexus articles (the above) into Wiki articles

If several of us do just a handful of articles, we can eventually get all of them converted.

Here is how to do it:

  1. Copy the Nexus article to a notepad document on your PC.
  2. Make sure you have a descriptive and concise title for it (this is VERY important)
  3. Determine which category tags should be attached to the article. Many typically include "Tutorial" and which game the info is related to (such as "Oblivion") and what tools are referenced (such as "NifSkope")
  4. If any images exist, make sure they are uploaded to the ImageShare in the "Hidden" category or upload them directly to the wiki for better control over the thumbnail and document positioning. Be sure to name the images the same as the title. Example: How_to_create_an_OMOD_screenshot1.jpg
  5. Add wiki code to match the articles original BBCode format.
  6. Create the wiki page, assign appropriate categories and use the Preview extensively to make necessary adjustments and then save.
  7. Mention the name of the original author in the discussion page.
    Example: Author of the article was: JDoe on May 10, 2009
  8. Finally, post on this thread with a link to the original Nexus article and the new article you created so I can review it and then delete the old article.

Keep in mind that this is just a conversion. There are probably plenty of articles that need to be updated and corrected but that can be done AFTER the articles have been placed on the wiki.

If you are not sure about the wiki code, feel free to look at any of the existing wiki articles and click on "View Source" to see how that page is formatted.

And as an additional incentive besides just helping out this community, there is also a contest going on and the amount of wiki articles added is part of the contest. :thumbsup: However, I probably should get clarification from Dark0ne if conversions count since he might have meant only new info.

The one additional item for conversion might be adding the comment log to the article's discussion page. I do think that the original author's name needs to be added to the discussion page since the person creating the wiki article will be attached to the article as if they created it...but a reference to the original author in the discussion page could clarify that so that credit is given as well as making it clear that the person that did the conversion is not the one you may not want to contact for questions about the contents. :geek:

When creating numbered bullet lists, be sure to use the pound symbol {#} and if you need to include lines without them being numbered but also not breaking the numeric count, use a semicolon after the pound sign {#:}

Example:

==Here is a list==
# One cup of sugar
# One cup of water
# Two packets of koolaid
#: NOTE: Be sure not to spill anything
#: Also be sure to use every little bit
# One teaspoon of blended worm
#: Be sure the worm is blended nice and smooth
# Stir until completely mixed
# Serve to unsuspecting children

Result (well, similar to this):

  1. One cup of sugar
  2. One cup of water
  3. Two packets of koolaid
    NOTE: Be sure not to spill anything
    Also be sure to use every little bit
  4. One teaspoon of blended worm
    Be sure the worm is blended nice and smooth
  5. Stir until completely mixed
  6. Serve to unsuspecting children

Thanks,

LHammonds

It's very difficult not to change some, but I'll refrain myself from it till the conversion is done :P.

There's an imageshare/fileupload on the wiki as well. Can't we use that one for images instead of the ImageShare?

That way everyone can update/replace the images if needed later on.

Great...thanks everyone.

omeletted, good idea mentioning what you are planning on doing to keep others from working on the same.

lostone1993, links to the original article are not necessary...they will eventually become broken. Just need the author/date created in the discussion page for proper credits.

EDIT #1: Upon inspection of "Tutorial Orbital Strike" I have the following suggestions for future reference:

- The title would have been more appropriate to just be "Orbital Strike" since we have the category tags for Tutorial, GECK and Fallout 3. It would be easier to find later when people were looking for something to do with "orbital" and finding it under the "O" section. Primary word being the 1st makes it easier to remember and find.

- The only image that showed up was the overview / preview image...so if I deleted the original article, all those screenshots would have been lost forever. So this article should still be considered a work-in-progress.

EDIT #2: I will be deleting the "tutorial orbital strike" wiki page in favor of this Orbital Strike page to be used as an example. Since we cannot rename titles, it has to be deleted in case you are wondering. If you create the page with the original content that was in the article, then later go back and make changes such as spelling and punctuation, you can note those changes when adding them and everyone can still see what the original looked like by looking in the history comparison. Feel free to see the changes I made to it. It still needs the images added but placeholders are clearly marked and will make it easy to add the "Orbital_Strike_screenshot1.jpg", "Orbital_Strike_screenshot2.jpg", etc. I (or anyone else) can use the wiki upload page to upload the images and add them to the wiki article...which will also be a nice line item in the history showing who added the images. Another thing I did was to put a single space in front of the "script" code so it would draw a box around it. Empty lines were a single space character to keep it from breaking the box...which looks much nicer and easier to identify as a code block.

Pronam, yes, you can use the file upload feature. I just forgot where it was and thought it might have been disabled. It will still work if you upload to the Imageshare but you are limited on what you can do with the image. With the wiki upload, you can control the thumbnail size and position on where it shows on the page...not so with external images. I will update the 1st post...or better yet, that info should probably be included in the "how to post a wiki" page.

I have confirmed with Dark0ne that if you convert a Nexus article, you will get credit in the wiki contest. Please keep in mind that the conversion of Nexus articles are the only exception...please do not grab tutorials from other sites and add them here thinking you will get easy wiki points in the contest because that falls under plagiarism.

Thanks,

LHammonds

EDIT by LHammonds: pierrejaquet was banned for uploading password-protected files. If he understood and asked to be unbanned, he would probably be re-instated.

Also I don't know what to do with jwvanderbeck tutorials --- full article is only available on Beyond Ferelden site.

EDIT by LHammonds: How about making a single article to provide a brief overview and just link to each of the tutorials? Something simple and brief...should also contain the "other sites" category.

Most of the ones lostone1993 are completed.

Please make sure to make use of the wiki format options when creating the wiki pages.

If the article has links, they need to be included in the wiki-version. Also, it is OK to convert the hard-links in articles into wiki links which looks much better.

Hyperlink conversion example:

BBCode:

GECK Required (download here: http://fallout.bethsoft.com/eng/downloads/geck.html)

Wiki Code:

* [http://fallout.bethsoft.com/eng/downloads/geck.html GECK Required]

Numbered list conversion example:

Plain Text

1. Do this 1st
2. Do this next
3. Do this last

BBCode:

[list=1]
[*]Do this 1st
[*]Do this next
[*]Do this last[/list]

Wiki Code:

# Do this 1st
# Do this next
# Do this last

Bullet list conversion example:

Plain Text

* Do this 1st
* Do this next
* Do this last

BBCode:

[list]
[*]Do this 1st
[*]Do this next
[*]Do this last[/list]

Wiki Code:

* Do this 1st
* Do this next
* Do this last

Also, when there are lots of lines with only a single carriage return separating the paragraphs, be sure to add an additional carriage return so there is an entire space between paragraphs so it translates well on the wiki page.
