Thank you for this. New to FO4 and modding. Had random lockups in the game and your guid helped fix this. Thank you from a nexus noob!

If that's the case, then you it's one of 3 things

1) broken or misfired script

2) 2 or more conflicting mods

3) redundant files IE a mod includes files for 25X ammo AND 50X ammo when crafting it, placing both in the load order could very well cause a crash. I know one crafting ammo mod that has EIGHT Esp's lol :P so if you loaded and enabled all 8, you would definitely crash each time you tried to craft ammo

Believe me, i'm well aware of that fact, which is why I followed the beginner's guide and followed the instructions strinctly. All of my files are green and et I keep getting CTDs.

if i've been playing a game where i didn't manage them at all besides installing with nmm, and it gave me random CTD issues, will that give me trouble once all my mods are sorted because of corruption in the save files or something?

I just made sure my mods are all squared away as far as i understand how to, with the help of this guide and some other tutorials... i was at a point in the game where if i loaded a save, it would crash within a couple of seconds, now it gets past whatever issue that was but still randomly CTD.

am i doomed to start over yet again?

edit: scratch that, it's back to crashing within a second of loading. oh also i forgot, i do have one issue still floating around. when i load wrye, i get a warning at the beginning listing a few files with unrecognized header versions. i haven't tried to look into it yet. i grow weary.

Now BAIN will try to classify the packages it detected in Bash Installers into its package formats - if it fails the package will display as unrecognized and will have to be restructured.

look down at the bottom left corner of WRYE, see the ? in the blue circle? click it

basically who ever made that particular mod made it using something other than the creation kit or Xedit

back to crashing within a second of loading

This is almost always caused by removing mods during that particular play through, IF, that's what you've done, my advice is start a new character after using my guide

OK. I'm a 52 year old noob to using mods.

I'm normally a vanilla guy, but FO4 deserves better building options and some diversity in hair, make-up, clothing, and some good ole fashioned nudity.

I'm using Windows 7 and everything was going OK with the 6 or so mods, ....until I downloaded the season pass and expansion packs. UGH! It became impossible to play for more than 5 minutes without a full computer crash.

After days of deleting mods and DLCs (all to no avail), I came across the forums and this post. - Remember I'm a noob to this.

** Gromulos, you're a saint for putting this guide together. THANK YOU!

Question: I did a fresh reinstall of Fallout 4, removed previous saves and all FO4 files.
Steam Cloud is turned off. I pulled a pre-mod save from a differently named folder and everything is running smoothly.

So, .... should I download the DLCs before adding mods? Is there any particular download order for the DLCs, since they've caused problems for some other players. Finally, are there any DLCs to avoid? The Mechanist appears to have been a major culprit in causing stability issues.

Thanks!!

Yes you should download the dlc's, don't worry about the order because if you're using my guide, WRYE will know the correct order for all of the vanilla files, as LOOT will also

3 EXCELLENT mods I will recommend, and I never do, are:

1) Nora spouse companion - https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/24680

2) We Are The Minutemen - https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/6443

3) the Unofficial Patch - https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/4598

I will no longer play at all with out these 3 mods

if you use my guide the you should not have any problems with The Mechanist DLC, i use it on every play through with zero problems

BTW, anytime you need a clean save, use this one, SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION lol :P - https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/33129

Thanks Gromulos!! You're a life (game) saver!

Preston Garvey made me hate everything about the Minutemen. *chuckling*

Hey, is FO4SE safe to run? Some mods require it.

I was messing with the original characters and accidentally hit save/start and began playing as the female character for the first time. As the game progressed, she was much more pleasant to play, but the vanilla underwear and skinny bodies became boring. So, I got CBBE and made "Nora" look like my wife. It was much more enjoyable to watch the power armor animation that way.

Anyway, I had CBBE, Spring cleaning, Azar's ponytails and the Cait and Curie simple remakes. Everything was fine until I got the season pass and loaded the DLC's. Then crash after crash.

So, with any luck, I'll be able to go back to running organic/radioactive/nudist colonies. :-)

Thanks again. Will let you know how it goes.
