New DLC beat in 20 minutes, feel letdown

So I love Fallout 4 and I'm mostly waiting for the workshop next month for the real modding to begin. I've beaten the game and seen all endings and I'm still playing because its fun. That being said, the new dlc came out today and it took me all of 20 minutes to beat. Its literally just 3 quests that dont take long at all. I did it at level 16 with only the starting weapons and armor after concord with little effort on "very hard" difficulty. I do love the fact that you can build your own robot companion but I do wish you could create eyebots. Seems weird that they left that out. There IS a "eyebot pod schematic" that leds you build an eyebot pod but all it does is let you send an eyebot to search for something like ammo or scrap, doesn't actually give you an eyebot companion at all. Just feels like there really isnt $10 worth of content here. I bought the season pass when the game came out so I guess I'm lucky.

Thanks for posting. I was extremely disappointed in the lack of quest/adventure content in FO4, but still had some hope there'd be DLCs to shore that up.

When I first looked at this DLC I thought "crafting expansion" but it was just a quick look and when I saw the trailer yesterday I thought maybe I'd been too hasty and there actually is a nice adventure here that I could sink my teeth into.

Guess not.

First got suspicious when someone posted in another thread, about an hour after the release, that they'd played the entire DLC. And now your post. Thanks again, you just saved me $10.

Edit: not sure exactly how Steam's refund policy works for DLC's, but maybe you could ask for your money back?

I will say that though its brief the Mechanist storyline is actually pretty fun. You can create anything from a protectron to a sentry bot as a follower and any crazy combination thereof. One thing I found out is you can create a robot companion and then go into workshop mode and set it as a provisioner! :D I'd love to see the lok on the raiders' faces when they realize the provisioner they were about to it is a sentry bot. :D It looks like you can set the robots to anything a settler can do. No more waiting for settlers to join your settlements just build your own. ;)

Since I bought the Season Pass at $29.99 I don't necessarily feel miffed about the price (because I get Wasteland Workshop and Far Harbor in the mix). However, I would not advise buying it at the current $10. You may buy it eventually but there is nothing in this DLC that will dramatically change the way you play from the beginning in Sanctuary Hill to the Institute.

The weapons are mostly lackluster, the exception being the Tesla Gun you loot off some unmemorable bandit leader. I have yet to conclusively test it but I think I can say with certainty that it's a great weapon to have in the beginning given how versatile it is (although I have yet to see if it is use-able around friendly settlers in a fight). The best armor in the DLC is an upgraded T-60 called a Tesla T-60 which only consists of the Torso and Arms and provides a damage bonus to energy weapons (might also include the Guass Rifle) that you also loot off the bandit lady. It's basically a T-60 with electricity conducting light-bulbs popped on.

The robots are not much, you can make ten of them total I believe but you only need to make two to complete the mission and one of them is an uncooperative *censored*. They make good companions in that you can craft optimal arm weapons and I do not believe they use any ammo. Unfortunately, the poor things tend to lose limbs in an extended fight unless your careful or have heavily modified them (they are affected by the Inspirational Perk). These robots can also be sent to settlements if you want them there in a fight (will go against population total) and they can even be made to run Supply Lines. It is strange to see a Robobrain traveling between locations with a Pack Brahmin in tow let me tell you. Honestly, if you have no need of strong companion support then these robots will have little use outside settlement decorations.

There are also two new minor hostile factions. There is now specialized gang of raiders that use robots and wear modified robot shells for armor, but their weapons are otherwise the same as their normal brethren. Then there are hostile robots that the Mechanist has sent out to do stuff, and some look pretty cool in a Mad Max sort of way.

The story element tying this all together is crap, or at least I thought so. I liked the Mechanist but everything came together too easily. There was no conflict, just resolution. Yes I had to eventually fight through waves of robots but at this point that is the bare minimum for me.

I feel like a lot of content is what you make of it. I'm still playing the Automatron DLC, about 4 hours into it and from what I have read am about 1/3rd finished. I'm also on Survival mode with a No Fast travel mod, Darker Nights so it's beneficial to sleep and various other mods which make the game more challenging and slow the player's pace. That may not be to everyone's taste and I can see how someone could blow through the content quickly and end up disappointed with it. Personally I enjoy it and feel that it's worth the wait although it is still fairly small for a full blown DLC package.

You can assign them to guard post, yes. You can use them like settlers. There are a lot of variations and its quite interesting to create.

I really enjoyed the bit of lore of the robo-brain program, and the reason(s) for their natural hostility and such.

***FURTHER BREAKDOWN SPOILER (NON-STORY)***

For the $10 you get:

  • 1 main questline that as mentioned prolly takes you 20 mins if you full speed ahead, 30-45 if you are explorative and on higher difficulties.
  • 1 radiant quest starter for another repeatable quest that also helps in tracking down new part designs.
  • 2 new workshop items: Wall mounted spotlights, and a neat little Eyebot station -- it needs power, but can send out the eyebot to search for ammo (You specify the TYPE of ammo even.) or scrap
  • 4 new weapons - Tesla Rifle -- Has a variety of forms, including a 'trap lob' form that allows you to lob out electric energy balls that do damage in an area till they vanish, a charge-shotgun form, and a charge single shot form. Assaultron Blade - Sword that looks badass as can be, not sure on its damage. ANd lastly Mr Handy sawblade weapon, kinda a longer range Ripper of sorts. And the severed Assaultron Head pistol, forgot it last time..
  • A new set of outer armor in all 3 tiers (Normal, sturdy, heavy) -- Robot armor, like the look. Kinda raider meets metal meets combat... which may sound odd, but makes sense when you see it. The helms are of course robot parts too, such as the eyebot helm.
  • A new set of 'unique' armor that is story related.. sure you can figure it out.
  • Robot crafting extreme -- LOTS of pieces to choose from, find etc, can make some really unique and useful companions, AND you can use it to craft settlers / guards / caravan runners too. You can go so far as picking the voice for them (And I see great mod potential there!!!) You gain a really cool resource from this. Setting a bot up for packing luggage can give you some really, really high carry weights, for example. Worth noting, you can actually edit Codsworth and I believe early Curie, too. I could be wrong on her, but I know Codsworth is fair game for upgrades!
  • 2 new locations to explore, including the robobrain assembly area, which has some neat lore.
  • New enemy types, besides the unique bots, you have the robobrains, and the Rust Devils (IIRC), a new gang that have a robot fetish and wear the new gear, and use some really badass raider robots.
  • New music -- The music in the robobrain factory was some of my favorite in the game honestly, it sounded really epic IMO. I don't think I am wrong about it being new, since I had never heard it before. I heard 1 other song in combat I didnt recognize too. Correct me if I am wrong.
  • New workshop / settlement area (Almost forgot.. ha)

I think that covers it... Honestly, I can't see being upset or let down by this at all even for $10. Its a solid amount of content, more than I anticipated. Not to mention, lots of new resources for modding, including new PC dialogue if needed.

Please note, I didn't post this to try and sell anyone onto the DLC or be a fanboy at all. This is just a straight breakdown of everything new I could think of. I think its worth it for a small DLC honestly. I cant wait for the next DLC to capture deathclaws and face them off against my new bots

This DLC could revolutionize to an extent the way we go about setting up new settlements. Not bad, certainly makes this more of a new game boon. I also liked the new wall mounted light although I found the Eyebot Module an OK though very interesting feature.
