NexusFiles
Hating how you could snipe from a great distance away, hidden behind a tree, and if you don't get an instant kill the NPCs beeline it straight towards your position. Equally frustrating when it is mutants and they lob a nuke at you with such accuracy. I attempted to lower the sound level using F04 Edit, but that didn't seem to work. Hopefully there is a way to tweak this after the creation kit gets released.
Moraelin
Depends, really. At the beginning of the game, yes, you're very easy to detect. After you max stealth and find several Covert Ops magazines, you're much harder to detect. Plus, actually shooting doesn't necessarily get you straight up detected. It just puts them in active search mode, where basically they pay more attention. If you're still too sneaky for that bonus, you can still remain undetected. So plan accordingly. At the very least make sure you're in the shadows. If it's outside, consider a more, shall we say, nocturnal life style. Light makes a big difference in detection. Investing in shadowed and muffled equipment can REALLY help. (Can I interest you in my shadowed power armour paint or shadowed synth armor?:p) Chameleon equipmnent is even better, and yes it stacks. The chameleon from several armour pieces DOES help. And, well, if you still can't pull it off and need a mod, well, that's been done already. You might try my Supah Ninja mod for example. minngarm
I've been able to slam drop people with a suppressed 10mm without it giving away myself to the rest of the pack. Of course that is also because I engage them out of sight of the others. I've also snipped with it at range from the shoreline to the rip tide and they go on alert sure but they don't know where I am. So I'm not entirely sure about the ppl that have problems with it. I am (it is hard to put it in game distance) 600 + yards away, behind a tree using a .50cal hunting rifle with a silencer. I can understand searching, but they don't bother with that, just spot me and start running towards me. It happened in the latter part of my last game when I was level 30 something. TheOriginalEvilD
The key word here is "suppressor" not "silencer". Though I doubt Beth put in enough realism to mimic real life, but the reality is a rifle is not completely silenced with a suppressor, so if your sneak skill is also not where it needs to be then you will be found. I can sneak shot them in the same room and enemies run up to me and stand in my face while I have my light on and they can't see me.
PoliteRaider
This is just going from my own in-game experience, I'm not sure how it actually works but I think they get the rough idea of your direction as an intermediate state between being detected and being completely undetected. It does make sense in some ways as well, "Where's the sniper?", "I don't know but they hit Bill's left temple so I'm guessing they're to the left". noahdvs
For me, suppressors are always a must have. Scope out the area first and pick them off one by one.

Are super mutants that smart? :D Their deficiencies seem to be mostly in handling complex abstractions and sophisticated language. Basic spatial cognition seems pretty much intact. I think associating a bullet with the direction of a shooter is within their reach, just don't ask them to understand why you're shooting them. Moraelin
Well, yes, I'm pretty sure that they figure out the direction, seein' as they take cover from that direction and actually start shooting in that general direction even if you're not detected. I've yet to see anyone actually come look for me 600 yards away, though. Like, ever. Hell, normal NPCs can't physically see that far, even if you were standing on a hill and waving at them. Which makes me suspect that some mod might be involved in the OP problems? EDIT: BTW, are any companions involved? Some can't sneak worth crap, and most actually make YOU more visible in the process too. So maybe the enemies are actually seeing the companion when they go into active search mode?
