Geforce GTX 1080 - NVIDIA Pascal

That is a good deal for a 980ti. Very tempting. But I'll follow your advice and wait to see what happens when the custom cooler models of the 1080 and 1070 have been out awhile.

How long (after the release of the 1080, 1070, etc.) before you folks think we will see a significant drop in the price on the 980 and 980ti?

Although my rig is last-gen (mobo, cpu and RAM), It still has plenty of umph for a GPU upgrade to be practical. But I'm not willing to shell out $600+ for a 980ti.

Yes, I've seen the MSI offering for $550. -but I'm leery of them (just personal reasons.) I'd rather EVGA or GIGABYTE.

The real bargains on these will be hardware enthusiasts selling their 980ti's so they can buy the latest tech (1080's). I'm already seeing a number of these for sale on tech forums marketplaces. Some are only months old and selling for half the price they paid for them. More fool them.

Custom 1080 will still be pretty expensive, but the cheaper of the custom 1070, once they're out, should be within your budget.

I'd expect the real price drops to come with Polaris. The 1070 should put some pressure on 980Ti prices, but the 980's price didn't drop when the 980Ti came out. Even today, if you just go ahead and look for 980s, you'll see prices that are on the average less than $100 behind the 980Ti.

Right now Nvidia's new cards aren't competing with anything. They're in a price range of their own, Nvidia's older cards are in the lower price brackets. You wouldn't sell a weaker card for more than a better card, but a retailer would. With the Polaris, NV will have to revisit their prices across the board.
