BC-G Longbow, New Habassa: Crusade +4:05 Days

"HOSTILE CONTACTS!"

The order shattered Peregrine's sleep. Dropping out of his nest, he dove for the bridge below.

"Multiple jump signiatures in the outer system. Looks like Mojlnir's survivors. Battleships and assault transports... and something new." The initial suprise gone, calm order had returned to the bridge. A wing pressed a button, and a comm laser sent its signal. As the defending ships came to full alert and entered attack formation, the incoming ships reached the designated point in space.

The fleet, in its haste to get to the target planet, had missed the tiny sensor contacts filling a sphere around Peregrine's base. Their course took them deep into the shell, and the points of unknown contacts surrounded them. Now they paid the price for their failure as thousands of anti-snow mines detonated. Mojlnir's fleet became chaos as the shockwave slammed into it from all directions. Ship after ship shattered or simpy vanished in a massive fireball, but there were just too many of them. The outer ships' deaths shielded the core group from the blast, and a still powerful force exited the field and into clear space. But the damage on the survivors was clear, air and water vapor streamed behind them, and their ice armor was melted smooth in places. Casualties had been especially heavy among the troop transports, their thinner hulls melting away to expose the troops inside. Only six made it out with any survivors left inside.

Meanwhile, aboard Longbow, Peregrine chose his next target. He waited a bit longer for the fleets to close to effective missile range, then gave the order to fire. The ship rocked as its internal launchers fired a full 68 missile salvo, then the pods trailing behind added their fire. The single shot launchers each held a 10 missile load, and each of Peregrine's 30 battlecruisers could tow 12 of them. Over 5,600 anti-snow warheads closed with Mojlnir's fleet. Behind them, missile pods empty, the battlecruisers' next salvo was "only" 2000 missiles.

A solid wall of anti-snow slammed into Mojlnir's battleships. The initial slavo had been targeted on just 5 of the 18 surviving K-2ls, and no point defense ever invented could stop that kind of fire. Those five ships vanished in an instant. But as the next salvo neared the fleet, Mojlnir's battleships finally entered firing range for their own weapons.

Near Space - New Habassa

BC-G Longbow

"Sir!! The fleet dispersed, the remaining K-2l's and the P-5's dodged the second barrage! Those 5 odd looking ships in diamond formation are making a full throttle run at the planetary surface! Planetary defenses are not even touching their shields!"

As the report is delivered the Longbow shakes so violently that for a moment Peregrine thinks the reactors have exploded. As the shaking subsides the unmistakable sounds of high-pressure plasma torches can be heard against the ships armor. Scrabbling now on wing and claw, Peregrine struggles to hold on just as the "Hull Breach" claxon sounds. Below in the hold, 5,000 enraged Space Marines storm the bridgehead created in the storage hold. The Longbows crew fights valiantly but they are out-number, out-gunned, and totally off guard. Outside, the P-5's guns pick off the escape pods as they try to get clear of the chaos inside the ship.

At 3 of Peregrines other capital ships, the scene is much the same, though two managed to get their guns in action and destroy or disable the incoming P-5's for the cruisers to pick off at their liesure. Below on New Habassa, the 5 c4v-17's pentrate the atmosphere and activate their crustal penetration lasers. The surface of the planet boils and the 5 ships disappear into the maelstrom, pushing nearly 2 miles into the planet before detonating their cargoes. New Habassa seems to bulge slightly and then sink in upon itself, until suddenly a giant fireball replaces what was once a planet and expands out into near space at astonishing speed. Many of Peregrines ships and most of the K-2l's are caught in this inferno and destroyed.

Caught off guard, Peregrine's immense defensive capabilites are coming online and his ships begin to score ever increasing casualties on Mojlnir's fleet. The mop-up will take time, but the majority of the attacking fleet is now only smoldering hulks, floating helplessly among the wreckage and bodies of the battle. Aboard the Longbow, the battle still rages intensely.

Mojlnir fights his way, with a squad of Space Marines, onto the bridge and finds Peregrine perched definately upon this command perch, blaster in claw. Moljnir ducks as Peregrine's pistol cuts down two of three remaining Marines. The third fires a shot at Peregrine, damaging his wing and knocking him to the floor. With a shriek of rage, Peregrine fires at the Marine, bringing him down. As Peregrin tries to get up, a boot presses against his injured wing and pins him to the floor. Mojlnir stands above him like an avenging angel, and Peregrine writhes in pain.

"No it ends, bird-man, but not before I leave you with something." Mojlnir pulls off his amulet and shows it Peregrine. The horror in Peregrines eyes is unmistakeable, and as Mojlnir heats the amulet in a near-by console fire Peregrine begins to shake uncontrollably. Grabbing the now red-hot amulet Mojlnir presses it to Peregrines chest, branding him with the image of the dragon that haunts his dreams. Suddenly, Mojlnir's eyes widen in surprise as a sno-blaster shot hits him in the back. Mojlnir rolls off Peregrine, his eyes clouding in death, but his face covered with a massive grin.

Struggling to breathe, Mojlnir looks at Peregrine and mouthes the words "See you in Hell" as he sinks to the deck dead. Surrounded by his security forces, Peregrine begins to assess the damage to himself and his fleet.

BC-G Longbow, New Habassa: Crusade +4:06 Days

As Peregrine's wounds threatened to overcome him, he gave one last order:

"Fall back! Give the retreat order, get us out of here!"

Then, all he could do for now done, he collapsed into unconsciousness.

Longbow turned and began leading the fleet out of the system. Though her armor was badly damaged and many of her weapons were down, the flagship still had enough power left to make the jump out. As Longbow reached the jump point, the scattered remains of the fleet made their own escape. But over half Peregrine's fleet lie destroyed behind them, and many of the survivors barely held together long enough to get out. The last dying glow of the remains of New Habassa illuminated the wreckage of the most devastating battle in the history of the Snow Wars. Here and there, a few survivors still fought desperately for life among the wrecks. Eventually, the last ships jumped out, and New Habassa was quiet once again.

BC-G Longbow, Antares Rift: Crusade +8:18 Days

The survivors of Peregrine's fleet sat hidden in the rift, its energy cloaking them from any outside observation. Workers swarmed around the battlecruisers, trying desperately to make repairs while there was still time. In complete contrast, however, were the eight carriers holding escort positions nearby. Those ships appeared as unmarked as the day they left the yards, new arrivals from Peregrine's other systems. Around them, interceptor patrols watched the edge of the fleet. The massive white shapes brought new hope to the tired crews of the battlecruisers, their solid and dominating presence a constant reminder that the fleet was far from beaten.

For the first time in days, Peregrine returned to reality. As his vision cleared, he saw the welcome surroundings, still on his own flagship. His wing and chest were covered in bandages, and most of the feathers there were still missing. But he was still alive.

The officer standing nearby noticed that Peregrine was awake, and walked over. Before he could speak, Peregrine asked the one question that dominated his mind.

"How bad?"

The officer didn't respond for a moment, as if considering how to state the bad news.

"Pretty bad. 13 battlecruisers lost, and another four will need months of repairs. And every one of the others was damaged. Longbow's got half her port launchers out, and some engine damage. But there is some luck in all this... our escorts are almost untouched. Seems they wanted our cruisers dead so bad they just ignored the smaller stuff. And our carriers are at full strength... we've pulled in eight of them from the outer systems, so if anything tries to follow up on the attack they're in for a suprise!"

At the last part, some of Peregrine's concern left him. For the first time since the attack, he smiled. But that quickly disappeared, as he turned his attention to his own injuries. "And me?"

"It looks worse than it is. The burns have mostly healed, and the broken wing bones are all well secured. Give it a few weeks to regrow the feathers and you'll be back to normal."

The news finally brought Peregrine out of his worried mood. As he relaxed and returned to sleep, dreams of a pleasant future ran through his head. Though hurt badly, he wasn't out of the war yet.....

*Ancalagon notices a something pricking him, so he pulls the Icecicle out of his heart. He turns to Oddguy...

"I'm a GOD you FOOL, I can't be killed, only my physical form can, and it so happens that Peregrine has one part of it on a pike, and the other is who knows where. And because of that I am following a strict stance of non-involvement, with the occasional 'scaring-the-bejesus-outta Peregrine-cause-I-love-to-see-him-fluff-up-into-a-giant-feather-duster'. So *censored* OFF."

*He pauses a moment, considering the foolish mortal in front him, that dared to stick HIM with an icicle. He finds it rather flatering that one would be so brave as to climb up his sheer tower and perform such a feat of tomfoolery. So he proposes:

"Mortal Man, who has pricked me with a rather pointy object, you shall watch ROTK with me in honor of your tomfoolery. So sit down, pass the popcorn, and know me better Man."

*Far away a mighty white dragon, one of the lesser fleet-winged messengers of Ancalagon, espies Mojlnirs spirit. Narcalya seizes Mojlnir in his claws and carries Mojlnir towards the Blessed Realm of the True Gods (there being many true Gods, Ancalagon only one of them, though the God of what exactly is debatable. Some think he is the God of the Stars and Deeps of space, while others think he is the God of Breakfast Cereals. The latter being the closest.)

With only dim understanding of his surroundings, Mojlnir senses, more than feels, that he is in motion. His shattered body, which he has left behind has been dragged from the bridge of Peregrines ship and dumped into deep space.

Surrounded by what unexplicably appear to be dragons claws, Mojlnir passes from consciousness and feels knows nothing more.

*Narcalya brings Mojlnir past the Impassible Pillars of Creation that guard the Blessed Ream of the True Gods, the large dragon appears as as a fly before the mightiest of trees when compared to the pillars. The Dragon sets Mojlnir's spirit down in a small clearing some 250 leagues from the Tower of Ancalagon, 150 leagues from the Pillars of Creation.

The Dragon pours a flask of some revivng liquid into Mojlnir's mouth, and waits for him to awaken.

Mojlnir sputters a little as the exlir passes his lips. Then he slowly rises to his feet, and shakes his head, which feels as though it is stuffed with cotton. Gradually, everything comes into focus, a small glade surrounded by dense trees and undergrowth, and in the distance to his left, what appear to be giant towers, larger than any he had seen, and to his right, further away than the towers, but still immense is a shimmering spire of silver.

Mojlnir, suddenly aware that he is not alone, turns around slowly and takes a step back as he notices the dragon for the first time. Rembering a show he watched on Animal Planet, Mojlnir prepares to play dead in hopes the dragon will not eat him. He realizes there is little chance of that though, because the dragon appears far from stupid and Mojlnir's spirit is quite evidently alive at this juncture.

Mojlnir braces himself and waits for the dragon to make its move.

Malchik wipes tears from his eyes. It really was the end! He passes round a box of tissues and a packet of Glacier mints to Pack Rat and ShinJiOh and teleports one to Ancalagon.

"Well, let's liven this party up. Anyone know a musician?"
