thecomplex
Hey guys, I am in the middle of configuring a new computer, and have a few questions about Oblivion performance that hopefully you guys can shed some light on. I tried search but couldn't find answers to these specific questions - sorry if I'm beating a dead horse. Here's my intended setup: Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 3.00 GHzeVGA nForce 680i SLI chipset4HB Corsair 1066MHz Dominator RAM2 150GB Raptor 10,000RPM hard drivesnVidia GeForce 8800GTX 768 (eVGA factory overclocked) I'm foregoing dual 8800 GTXs in anticipation of the release of the next high-end nVidia card in November, hoping to upgrade to that sometime next year. I have read that a single 8800GTX should be able to run Oblivion at 1900x1200 with all high settings, for the most part, and I figure I can further optimize the game by following the directions laid out in the excellent Guide on this site (plus mods such as low-poly grass). However, I also want to install two mods which I'm sure may cripple the game: "Qarl's textures" and "Tamriel Viewable When Distant." Does anyone have any experience with the frame rate impact of using these two mods? Will I be able to impliment them and still run the game at 1900x1200 playably? at 1680x1050? Your answers could affect my choice of display, I'm currently thinking of going with a Dell UltraSharp 24" display if my comp will be able to handle the native resolution, otherwise I might get a 20" Apple Cinema Display. Thanks a lot! Chris
Switch
Moving this to Technical Support. My PC can handle Oblivion well on all max at 1440x900 (smooth in exterior) and it's considerably less powerful than your setup: AMD 64 X2 4200+ 2.8ghzMSI SLI K9N Platinum chipset2GB 667MHz Crucial RAM1 Maxtor DiamondMax 250GB 7200RPM SATA-II drivenVidia GeForce 7900GS 256 So your setup is far beyond what it needs to be to play Oblivion well, which gives you some leeway where mods are concerned. Qarl's does have a significant performance impact from what I've seen from people on these forums, though I haven't used it myself. The distance one I'm not sure, but I would think that would be pretty massive if it gets rid of LOD.
thecomplex
Thanks Switch, I'm sure the computer will be able to breeze through Oblivion (at least compared to the fossil I've been running it on), and I don't expect Qarl's textures to make it unplayable - however the LOD mod might crush it. I anticipate having to tinker around, which I guess is part of the fun. 24" UltraSharp might be the way to go, but I think I actually prefer the size of a 22" screen - the 24" is a bit too big I think. But I can't find any 22" monitors with a dot pitch lower than .28, and the more I think about an Apple Display the more I wonder if it's worth all the extra money.. tsolless
I run with tons of texture and enviroment mods. (Qarl's texture makes it look reeeeaaalllly nice) I can do it easily. You should be able to run it no problem.
Dark0ne
Can't really answer your questions since I have no experience with these mods. However, I have noticed you're going for 4GB of memory. Just wanted to confirm that you're going to be using Vista .. since XP only recognises 3.25GB of memory and no more. Come to think of it, it's either XP, or 32bit operating systems. Marxist Bastard..where art thou?
dyfed99
Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 3.00 GHzeVGA nForce 680i SLI chipset4HB Corsair 1066MHz Dominator RAM2 150GB Raptor 10,000RPM hard drivesnVidia GeForce 8800GTX 768 (eVGA factory overclocked)On an italian e-commerce site I've made an identical configuration (in a moment I was bored of Tess..).Well I've put in it the Intel Quad Core and 4 WD Raptor, plus I've chosen the liquid cooled eVGA (both the MB and graphic cards). But I need about 8.000€ to buy it..!?! Do you think it's worthwhile..?
thecomplex
Hey, Thanks for the replies. It will be a month or so before I can order this monstrosity but I can't wait.I haven't decided yet whether or not I'll go with Vista or XP. Any advice? I did load up on RAM though (and get the 10,000RPM drives) because I also use my system for audio editing and recording music, and I'll need to be running a lot of memory-hungry plugins and programs simultaneously. In terms of quad core, four raptors, and liquid cooling.. No way I could afford that :)I was actually going to put liquid cooling in this PC but I questioned the benefits vs. the cost. Dark0ne
I got the Q6600 (quad core) over the E6850. They were around the same price and current benchmarks showed only a very, very slight increase in performance from the E6850 over the Q6600. With that in mind I decided to go for the quad core as some of the up coming games will be making use of all the cores you have. Maybe food for thought?
