LHammonds
If someone was thinking about holding online / real-time training sessions using screencapture and audio along with the ability to have one or more students watching with the ability to talk or chat, what "FREE" solutions are out there that can do this as well as being able to "save" the event so it can be viewed later (not real-time) by others as a training tool they can watch as if they were there...but obviously cannot participate like those that were there during the recording. Any ideas? Here are some tools I know about, but none are "integrated" and I don't suspect any will be that are free. Mumble - Voice communication (multi-user + recording)TeamViewer - Screen sharingCamStudio - Screen recordingQuteCom - Chat and VoiceSkype - Chat and voice EDIT: It seems that what I am looking for is provided in a non-free product called WebEx. So, with that very specific product in mind, I can now look for free alternatives to that package. Option #1: OnWebinarVideo broadcasting (unlimited # of students)Text chat supportedWhiteboard and slide show presentationFile sharingPollsAnnotationsPossibility to integrate it on personal websiteStudents only need web browser to participate Option #2: Mikogo - Web conferencing & Desktop sharingCan share entire desktop or specific application (multi-monitor support)Participants can become presenters on the flyUp to 10 participants can attendPresenter and participants can record and playback session (requires player)Whiteboard with various nice optionsMulti-user chat with various nice optionsTransfer files up to 200 MB in size Option #3: GoLiveRoom (FREE version)Limited to 30-minute sessions max3 people maximumChat supportedVideo supported via WebCamVideo supported via ShowMyPC2000 (UltraVNC) for Screen/App sharingUses AdsNOTE: Initial testing revealed problems with ShowMyPC app when rendered video useless and closing the session with people still connected caused their browser to lock up. Not a good initial experience to say the least. Option #4: Justin.TV can broadcast your video to a live audience.Person hosting the channel must register an ID.Viewers do not have to sign-up.Chat supported Option #5: Yugma - Web conferencingMaximum participants: 3Maximum session length: 15 minutesAudio support (VOIP)Desktop sharingSkype integrationWhiteboardAbility to change presenterRecord and PlaybackFile sharingPolls Option #6: Freebinar - Web conferencing>> Need to research << Here are some options that were close but ruled out for various reasons: ShowDocument - App-based web meetingsMaximum participants: 3Maximum session length: 30 minutesMaximum storage: 10 MBNo live AudioNo live VideoNo commercial useCan share entire desktop or a single appAdsWhiteboard supportChat language translator

LHammonds
what kind of training videos, id be interested in watchin for sure!Until I can find a workable solution, I'm not going to make any big plans. This is just in the idea phase...not the planning or implementation phase. ;)
hoofhearted4
yea. but what kind of training videos. like everything computer related? as in how to build, how to video edit, how to format, etc etc.? cause that would be amazing to have all sorts of reliable how to videos in one place. youtube is good but its hard to find a good in depth video over the plethora of 3:00 minute videos that dont tell me what to do on anything :P hope this idea comes to fruition!!! LHammonds
yea. but what kind of training videos. like everything computer related? My initial thoughts were training on Blender, Paint.NET, NifSkope, using the Nexus, etc. Making training courses and videos is not the hard part, being able to do them online with immediate student feedback in order to tailor a session to their needs AND record that session and all input in order to make a training video out of the training session is the cool idea I'd like to implement. Kind of like WebCasts where you can go and be a part of it and participate while it is being aired but then turn it into a "recorded" event that anyone can see "what happened" during the live webcast. There are a lot of technologies at play here and I'm just not sure there is a capable "free" solution...especially with the live broadcast part. I might relegate this idea to just doing the training video and doing a playback to allow students to pause the video, perform the tasks, ask questions and continue on through the tutorial. Or maybe just host "questions and answers" sessions about the video where the students go through the video on their own time and we all meet up after to discuss the contents of that training video. prandiningrat
Camtasia from tech smith is one of the famous video capture that used for tutorial or presenation by professionals but as said above it doesnt have the ability to talk or chat(web conferencing)..here is comparison for screencasting software, and also web conferencing software.I just looking forward for the training..
ub3rman123
Have you considered multiple programs? Teamviewer + Mumble seems like a good method. It might be a bit unwieldy, but it could work.
LHammonds
Have you considered multiple programs? Teamviewer + Mumble seems like a good method. It might be a bit unwieldy, but it could work.I have considered it and as a matter of fact, that is how I started out my research. Integrated solutions seems to be the better solution since what I'm trying to do is fairly complicated. Text / Audio chat + video webcasting + video or app sharing + recording of the entire event is quite complicated...not only for me but potentially for anyone wanting to attend. Each time you add an additional / separate technology, it can cause all sorts of problems and delays to get the class started. The TeamView + Mumble example is workable, however it is not ideal. TeamViewer is more of a helpdesk "fix my PC" utility. If I used that, anyone connecting to my PC basically sees my entire desktop and can control the mouse. Not exactly a good idea if you are wanting to show just an application. Also gets hairy if you have more than one student at a time. TeamViewer is an awesome utility if you want me to hook up to your PC and fix something for you...but not that great for a web conference. They have additional modules but they are paid apps and still are not geared towards a virtual classroom I want to setup. The top options I've been researching so far are OnWebinar and Mikogo and seem to on par with WebEx or even surpass it. LHammonds
