Skyviper086
I ran into a scam yesterday on the newvegasnexus downloads. The ad said dare to click here or something like that. When I did the next page presented the prizes that were apple products. You solve this puzzle and give them some info and they enter you in for a chance to win. I foolishly filled that survey out and after that one they had a the 1000 dollar Walmart gift card. It looked like you were on Walmarts website and I knew then I been had. I figured nexus would like to know about this and so would others.
TheVampireDante
If you see it again could you take a screenshot of the offending ad, what region you are in and any other details you feel are relevant. Same for anyone else, if you know of this advertisement I ask the same, the sooner this is identified the sooner it can be reported\removed. Skyviper086
Will do. Thank you for replying to this in such short notice. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy that Nexus actually cares about its people. Edited September 29, 2011 by Skyviper086
JimboUK
This might not have made a lot of difference in your case but I think it's worth a mention, a lot of sites now use Rapport to make sure nothing fishy happens. It's handy even on sites that don't use it. For example if a site has a Paypal link that actually goes somewhere else Rapport will know that and correct the I.P so you are not sent to a scam site, it also protects against things like keyloggers by encrypting keystrokes in protected fields. My bank were the ones who put me on to it. This is mine, as you can see last year a site I was on had a phoney Paypal link on it. http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/310/rapp1.jpg Keylogging... http://img585.imageshack.us/img585/5715/rapp.jpg
Skyviper086
Thanks for the info. Lucky the only the thing the punks have is my mailing address to a p.o box, cellphone number that will be changed, and a deleted email account. My name is also very common but they have the first name and only the first letter of my last name. they Know my age but so does everyone else in cyber world. They do not have credit card information and they know I don't have cancer. Thank you for giving me(and anyone else in my position) this information. bben46
One of the big things they are after with those bogus surveys is a live email. They can use that to send spam and as a starting point to build a personal profile of your private data. They may ask some questions on those that should not be answered. Things like the year you graduated from high school, What town you were born in, mothers maiden name, the name of your first pet, grandfathers middle initial - these are commonly used as security questions on sensitive web sites. Then, with some of that info, even if you do have a common name they may be able to put a name on that email. then use the answer to one of those questions to change a password on some other site - like your banking or credit card web site.
