Xbox 360s power brick problem?

Recommended Posts

recently i bought an Xbox 360s from the u.s. and it worked perfectly normal there. but when i came back to Asia i had to buy a different power brick ((110v-240v)). at the moment i plugged the power brick in it makes this wooshing fan noise and its really loud. when i try to watch a movie it ruins it... when i play a game it ruins it... and theres a return "no" policy so im stuck with it... it works fine and its also new it just make too much noise... pleas help me! i cant stand that noise and i cant return it either... thanks

Hopefully your TV is up against a wall to another room. Put the XBOX in the other room, punch a hole in the wall and run the cables through. The wireless controllers will still work and the noise will be drastically cut down...but not for the poor bloke on the other side of the wall.

My first guess is the fan is intended for 110vac and you are now feeding it 240vac. Forcing it to run twice as fast. However, I would assume  that the brick supplies a DC voltage and NOT AC. allowing the xbox to be used in any country as long as you have the proper brick.

My own experience with power in Asia is there is quite a wide range depending on what part - from a low of 90vac in some parts to 100, 110, 220, 230 and 240vac and either 50hz or 60hz. What you need to look at in a power brick is both input - MUST be what your location supplies and output - MUST be what your Xbox requires. If your location supplies 240 VAC,and your Brick input is rated at 120vac, then the output will Be much higher than the Xbox can handle. Some power supplies have a voltage switch to set the input value to 110 or 220vac.

As for frequency (Hz) if your brick is intended to run on 60hz (US standard) and you location is supplying 50Hz (European standard) A 60Hz brick running on 50Hz tends to run hot and may fail early.

The power brick is supposed to take whatever line voltage you give it and convert it to the proper voltage for your console. As I don't play with consoles I'm not sure about the fan voltage in yours. However, if the voltage from the brick is too high, I would not expect the entire xbox to last very long.

If the xbox is running hotter, and the fan is temperature controlled that could be another problem - the fan is noisy because it is trying to keep the temperature down.

As TheNexus is a PC based forum, you might get better advice, or at least more informed advice posting on a forum dedicated to the xbox.
