UOP UOPS USIP UOMP?

Ok, here's the deal, I love Oblivion, but not long after started playing I began noticing things I couldn't play with, so I went to the mods.. Now I was struck by a wall of confusion. I must say, people certainly haven't made it easy to comprehend what's needed and what isn't needed of the mods. Not to mention that it seems that there's no real standard, there seems to be like 5-6 different mod managers etc.

All in all, my experience so far is that the people that currently know what there is to know about installing mods are keeping their knowledge to themselves. I've not seen any guides really, apart from the very basics.

For example, what I come here with is this, what the freck does UOP UOPS USIP UOMP these mean? I know what they abbreviates stand for, but are they all needed or not?

Let's say I have Oblivion + Shivering Isles + the patch to 1.2 or something, the newest official one you know.

So which ones of these ( UOP UOPS USIP UOMP = Unofficial Oblivion Patch / Unofficial Oblivion Patch Supplemental / Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch / Unofficial Official Mods Patch) am I supposed to install all of them? Or only the USIP since I have Shivering Isles installed? What about UOMP? What's that even for? I don't understand since there's no explanation anywhere that's satisfactory.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but to my current estimate and my best guess as how to install these.

For a game that holds Oblivion + Shivering Isles (excluding the "Knights of the Nine" etc.) + the official latest patch, I would need the following installs in the following order:

_

UOP

then,

UOPS

and then,

USIP

_

Is that correct?

Looking back at it now, perhaps it makes sense, but having to scour the internet for a few hours to find something as simple as this is quite confusing, I dread this task upon anyone that aren't any good with computers at all. I myself am a programmer and an engineering student. My advice, stop all the abbreviations, they're a nightmare when you're first getting into trying to use mods.

~Kaneda over and out.

simple answer to your long question

they were written for individual purposes

so install all that could possibly apply

and obviously install any original before anything designed to modify that original

so UOP before UOPS

the other two can be in any order as they shouldn't modify anything the others modify

What Fonger and fg109 said is very accurate, assuming you are going to install the Unofficial patches no matter what.

However, don't fail to realize that the Unofficial Patch is not a "cure-all." In fact, many, many people have had significant issues with the patch after installing it. I would at least proceed with caution, especially if you are planning on installing other mods in the future. UOP (Unofficial Oblivion Patch) doesn't play nice with other mods (most of the time).

P.S. OBMM is the "traditional" mod manager. Very functional and very handy.

Thank you all three, appreciate the swift replies.

Alright, so I do want to install other mods, especially "Francesco's leveling mod" (the one that keeps creatures at a constant level instead of the silly auto leveling with the character) and "natural environments" mod, and probably a few other small ones like "A to take all, E to close all".

But ok, to update, just incase others are out there searching the same questions that I did.

The progress if one installs Oblivion + Shivering Isles + Knights of the Nine (+ other official addons):

Install order:

1: UOP

2: USIP

3: UOMP

4: UOPS

Can you confirm this would be a sensible approach?

Btw, I do plan to use Oblivion Mod Manager, but I just need to grasp it fully, just looked at it today. Do I need to convert these before mentioned patches into .omod as well? Or do I just .exe install these?

I think you're in the right direction, and welcome to Oblivion modding. :)

There's always that learning curve to deal with at the beginning but soon you'll get the hang of it. Everybody here has paid their dues one way or the other to get their game the way they want.

A little history about the unofficial patches to help you on your modding, according to my limited recollection:

UOP - Unofficial Oblivion Patch 3.2.0 - deals with patches to bugs in the original Oblivion game (w/o Shivering Isles) after Bethesda released their final patch 1.2.xxx.

USIP - Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch 1.4.0 - deals with patches to bugs in the Shivering Isles expansion after Bethesda released their final patch 1.2.xxx.

UOMP - Unofficial Official Mods Patch 15 - deals with patches to bugs in the official DLCs.

UOPS - Unofficial Oblivion Patch Supplementals 3.3.7 - deals with more bugs found in the original Oblivion game, the Shivering Isles expansion and some of the official DLCs after the original authors of the unofficial patches, Quarn and Kivan, took a break from Oblivion modding. This part of the unofficial patches is contributed by Arthmoor and is considered as the most up-to-date bug patch. It still requires you to install the original unofficial patches before you install this one.

You can also check out the official Bethesda forum for Oblivion mods as it seems Kivan, is currently back in Oblivion modding and is preparing an update to the unofficial patch/es.

Thank you. I did as I wrote myself in my previous post, and so far it's working flawlessly as long as you remember to activate the DLCs as they don't come avtivated by default, leading to missing meshes and textures etc.

Now I'm just need to get a few mroe mods working, like OOO, since I hate the idea that everything levels with me, since then what's the point of leveling if you don't get stronger relative to the enviroment.

  • 2 years later...

Hi guys!

Sorry to up a 2.5 year old topic but I'm brand new to Oblivion (yeah, I know, I'm a bit late) and I do have a few questions:

1) Is it necessary to install UOP 3.2.0, USIP 1.4.0 and UOMP v15 before installing more recent versions? I'm wondering because UOMP v18 is approx 20 percent smaller than v15.

2) fg109 here said "There might be problems with installing UOPS before the other ones. I recommend installing that last." Now, since according to the Tes4mod wiki, the supplementals were merged into UOP 3.4.0 and later, wouldn't it cause problems with USIP and UOMP? Also, this wiki doesn't mention USIPS and UOMPS. Are they merged into USIP 1.5.3 and UOMP v18 too or do I need them? I suspect the former to be in the USIPS Additional Changes.esp file found in my install, but what about UOMPS?

3) In a readme found inside the "Unofficial Patches and Refurbish - ALL," you can read that "if you are using the SSSB patch, remove it from your load order BEFORE loading with the DLC patch update active. There is no danger of losing items, but the DLC patch update will need to relocate those references the SSSB patch moved previously." Then here: http://tesalliance.org/forums/index.php?/files/file/1297-unofficial-official-mods-patch/ you can read that "it is recommended to not activate the Thieves Den' SSSB (Sigil Stone Sound Bug) fix plug-in DLCThievesDen - Unofficial Patch - SSSB.esp on an existing game, but rather only on a new game, as otherwise the middle deck of the Black Flag could lose its doors (as their position is stored in the save file) and/or any objects already dropped in this cell could be lost." So my question is, since I have a brand new install and I haven't started a game yet, is it safe to use SSSB or are there other reasons against it?

On a side note, I'm well aware of Oblivion's auto-levelling issues and I'm looking for a less, uh, casual experience. Between TIE and OOO, which one is better? Or maybe I can install both - in this case, in which order?

That's all, folks!
