SavageNights
My desktop does not have internet but my laptop does. Will I be able to install Skyrim on my laptop and then transfer Skyrim's directory to my desktop and play it from there? I can't login to steam from my desktop. Cheers. luthienanarion
If you can't connect to Steam (for whatever reason) on your desktop, you won't be able to play the game on it. Any method of circumventing Steam shouldn't be discussed here.
anandus
Connect your desktop to the internet (somehow), install the game and after that start Steam in offline mode and exit Steam. Now you can start Steam in offline mode everytime :)
Aluminumfoil
Do you have an ethernet cable (more commonly called a CAT5)? It takes a little voodoo magic, but if you want, I can walk you through how to daisychain your internet from your laptop to your desktop. I'm assuming your laptop has wifi access but you don't have an ethernet point to plug your desktop into. If you don't have a CAT5 cable, any store that sells computer bits should have them - Walmart, Kmart, Radio Shack, Circuit City, Bestbuy, Amazon, Newegg, etc. Price will be less than $10. If your desktop doesn't even have an ethernet jack and that's your problem, your solution is a little bit more expensive, but still quite viable: get a USB wireless adapter. These are a little harder to find (I doubt Walmart and Kmart stock them), and are probably best purchased online, since the markup you get at a store will be less than whatever shipping you pay for. Price point is around 25 dollars, you plug in the device, install its drivers, and it functions as a wifi card and antenna to give your PC wireless internet access. bben46
Like nearly all Bethesda games, Just copying the game will NOT work. The game must be installed and not copied onto the computer where it is to be played. This partly a cheap DRM as it creates some registry entries on installation that cannot just be copied to another computer, and partly because the game looks at your hardware and some game settings based on what it finds during install. If you can, follow the advice of Aluminiumfoil above to hook up your game computer through the laptop to get it online to install. After it is installed and activated through steam, you can disconnect the hookup to play offline.

21603
Keep in mind too that the TESV.exe doesn't need Steam open to run. I'm guessing someone stuffed up and only linked the launcher to Steam not the actual game executable. Yay for those that hate on Steam I guess. That's the second time they've done that, they put the copy protection for Fallout 3 on the launcher instead of the game.
