but it seems quite clear a lot of people are using it as an excuse to try and start some kind of new hardware war.

Exactly, and it's a useless waste of time and not even the focus of the situation.

Mods on PC: Fine.

Mods on Console: Fine.

Mods taken without permission: Not fine - doesn't matter what platform.

Some people just won't accept that last point, despite the evidence.

Because logic.
I have seen amazing mod authors banned from here for the most trivial and ridiculous of things. I'm surprised any decent mod authors even upload to nexus anymore.

A moderator gets his feathers ruffled and butt-hurt and you are gone.
I'm probably gone for writing this?!

- "moderation lololol" - this is just s#*! slinging, where you don't even realize all that s#*! lands on yourself. Guess you like it.

"My friend was banned on a false accusation" - show us the link to his ban and proof that it was a fake accusation. Unless you do, you're full of more s#*!. Guess you really like it.

"then made another account to explain the false accusation to which the moderators banned him for making another account.
Because logic." - because rules. read them, there are very few and most reduce to "don't be a dick".

"A moderator gets his feathers ruffled and butt-hurt and you are gone" - more s#*! slinging. You REALLY like being covered in it, eh?

You want to discuss that, then do so with me.

I'll need their username, and if you can find it a link to to their ban notice.
If you cannot supply the ban notice link, then I'll look it up myself.

For reference though - if they felt wronged, they should have supplied any evidence of their innocence within a submitted unban appeal. This information would have been supplied to them, and should have been followed.

Creating a second account without permission is also against site regulations and grounds for an instant ban on the new account and forfeit of any further appeal.

Perhaps both of you should read over the site terms of service. It looks like neither of you understand how this site works as far as it's rules and regulations are enforced.

As rude as this post may be I hope I impress upon those who read it that stealing someone's work is not okay. Software or otherwise. And for god's sake, the mods being stolen are already free! You can't even argue about how it's too expensive and you steal them because you can't afford to pay for them, I mean really your argument is complete garbage.

As for trademark/copyright everything on the nexus as well as beth.net already falls under a creative commons licence, ala they are at the point of distribution already filed and legally documented, so you don't seem to understand much about copyright and trademark law and probably shouldn't be making the assumption that legal recourse can't be taken by someone who has uploaded mods here or for that matter any other site.

I suggest you look up every single video of Todd Howard on youtube, that has been released over the last five years. He seems not getting tired of praising the community and how much Bethesda owes us and on and on and on.

Releasing games that are decent enough to get bought by many people is one thing. Really caring about the community and not only talking about it in some random video is something totally different.

Gotta love how "it's free, so I can do whatever I want with it" argument is brought up.

So no, only things belonging to beth are what they made and what I use from their creations. If I made new stuff they're all mine.

So to follow up on the stupid ending - stop crying about what other people can do with their own goods and creations.

I’ll list a few of the common and reasonable reasons for not wanting to share their work either on other sites, or specifically for console users.

The mod author is aware the mod will not work on consoles or could even potentially harm a console, therefore will not port the mod to consoles.
The mod author was actively working on porting their mod to consoles, but it actually required some work to do as they needed to make changes to their mod to accommodate the limits on mods and ensure it was as efficient as possible for console users.
The author prides themselves on being able to tell their users it’s been optimised as much as possible, but sadly doesn’t own a console and doesn’t want to buy a console to ensure that same quality is also evident on consoles.
In the same vein, it’s hard to fix bugs specific to console mods if you don’t actually own the console and can’t test it yourself. The author doesn’t want to release a mod they can’t actively support.
The mod wouldn’t actually be allowed on Bethesda.net due to the content of the mod conflicting with their mod uploading rules.
The author doesn’t want to manage their mods in multiple locations on multiple sites and prefers to keep everything in one place, on one site.
The author has made use of other user’s assets, with legal permission to do so, and therefore cannot grant others the right to share that work without first getting permission from the original creator of the work that may or may not be possible.
The author doesn’t like Bethesda.net/Nexus Mods/whatever site we’re talking about so refuses to use it.
Mod authors make mods for themselves first, and you second. If the second part, you, becomes too much of a problem for them, they’ll simply not want to share them with you at all.

Birchconnor834,

I am a writer. If I put my work out there, and someone decides to use any aspect of it without giving me credit, I have grounds to sue. It's MY creation. I may have used MS Office, but it's MY work. MS doesn't own any of it. (Lesson here: Plagiarism is illegal)

In essence--what was said in the above article, if you had bothered to read it--is that despite it being free, despite the base product belonging to Bethesda, that little bit of software/mod belongs to the author. NOT Bethesda. Your statement about "if you don't want people to 'steal it' don't release it" is inaccurate and ignorant. (Lesson here: Theft is still theft even if it's free)

Also, punctuation is your friend. Learn to use it.

Sincerely,

A faithful mod loving user who is ever so greatful for other people sharing their creativity :)

Why not close off the community from any new members and begin monitoring who reuploads mods (tracking downloading history maybe)? We could start accepting new members from a referral system (only members part of Nexus for certain period of time and free of infractions could invite).

Sorry if it is a terrible idea. I thought that if nobody can download these mods off of Nexus freely, no bot or troll could reupload them.

I'm starting to get sick of the way Bethesda treats PC players. They pride themselves on their PC and modding roots, but they're trying to become Open World RPG Call of Duty. Not to say that it's wrong, that there shouldn't be an open world RPG version of Call of Duty, I enjoyed Black Ops 3 and think Infinite Warfare actually looks pretty cool. But that's not what the Elder Scrolls or especially especially especially Fallout should ever be. Bethesda is constantly selling out their roots for modern gaming trends. Their target audience is the console FIFA/Madden COD players. They know that people who've been around since Arena or Fallout 1 are going to pick up the newest TES/Fallout even if the only way you can obtain it is to buy Mountain Dew and Doritos until you've gotten enough Bethesda points to win the game.

Mods on consoles is a great way to expand the franchise for new fans, but I feel like it's going to come at the cost of PC modding. Bethesda is going to want to own the modding scene. Maybe they won't charge paid mods, but having small mod-bits DLC such as the building-pieces DLC for Fallout 4 is going to be their way of getting people to spend additional money since the Vault 111.01 Overhaul Mod isn't going to work without the Vault-Tech Workshop DLC. Maybe they'll limit the power of what mods can accomplish, essentially capping out the capacity of mods at console levels. Oh, Mod X won't work on the PS4/XB1? I guess the Creation Kit isn't powerful enough to make the mods. Oh, we want to control all mods, so why not lock down mod creation exclusive to the Creation Kit? Why not lock down mods exclusively to Bethesda.net?

I'm seriously worried that as time goes on they're going to water down the tools mod makers have so console users aren't left out. I'm afraid they're going to lock mods into their delivery services and creation services, focusing on making it so every mod on earth is cross platform especially for consoles meaning no PC exclusive mods (think Skywind, expansive overhauls that are too big for consoles) so that their new favorites aren't left out.

It's a bit paranoid, but the attitude Bethesda is showing makes me think it's possible. They're seemingly obsessed with making sure console users get the best experience, we PC players only get stuff like 60fps and the ability to use keyboard + mouse. If it were reasonable to not support 60fps or keyboard/mouse on PC and it were cheaper to do so I wouldn't be surprised if modern day Bethesda wouldn't go the extra mile to provide that stuff. And considering that modding is now on consoles, when has Bethesda ever gone the extra mile for PC gamers? I'm not demanding 4K 144fps crazy crap like that, but they're pretty much putting the bare minimum in servicing PC gamers. How long until mods become like that too?

Hiding mods for protection is a good way to prevent them from stealing.
The fact people see no other way and go private with a lot of good mods makes me sad and angry.
