Disabling HDR / bloom

Anyone have any luck. I tried editing the ini but turning HDR off made no difference. The way the gamma in this game is setup I'm frequently having trouble seeing things. The HDR effects are so over the top exaggerated that nothing I can do with my display settings will get me consistently viewable image (for example, my horse is so black there is essentially zero detail despite my brightness setting being all the way up).

Is it on by default? I cant say ive noticed the bloom your having but certain fires are waay too bright and looks stupid. (Plus the bloom in Oblivion looked stupuid so they never do it right)

By some opinions, some bloom/HDR stuff can be kinda ugly... and it's hard on low-end systems.

update so people don't have to read what didn't work in the rest of the thread:

Check out ENBSeries for Skyrim - you can seriously change the graphics - bloom, SSAO, AA, lots..

in enbseries.ini could try

[EFFECT]

EnableBloom=false

EnableAdaptation=false

UseOriginalPostProcessing=false

EnableAmbientOcclusion=false

I really hate the forced HDR as well...totally ruins a lot of the images. For sure one of the first mods I look for next to dual wield sheaths and shield on backs.

Wait, you guys don't like Bloom lighting?? What?

I'm mostly annoyed by the brightness variation of the HDR effect. Bloom is probably okay but it'd be nice to have it as an option too.

Besides the performance issues on old rigs (like 2 I donated that would run it much better without either)...

and choice being good (you can do your own bloom with ENBSeries)...

Visually I might not mind some bloom and HDR (even more sophisticated) but I like them subtle - and you could do this with gamebryo before. Just that most defaults are way too glaring, hazy, oversaturated, etc.

I'll test some stuff, http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/HDR_Settings and http://www.tweakguides.com/Fallout3_11.html

By some opinions, bloom/HDR can be some of the ugliest things done to nice looking scenes.

I agree you get a similar thing used on real-life scenes from photographers who use HDR for everything :facepalm:

As a side note, HDR in photography and in games is quite the opposite of each other.

In photography it's primarily used to reduce the over-sensibility of photosensors to light contrasts, so that the photo looks more like the scene as we perceive it.

While in most games it's strangely the other way around, used to induce contrast issues so that it looks like seen through a camera... sic.

High contrast might look good in some situations but it's so poorly used here...

Yes, It's as if Bethesda thinks "hdr" means "make the highlights completely blown-out and make the shadows totally underexposed, and do it at the same time!" I also hate the "pupil" effect in games, where they try to simulate what your eyes do. If they made it subtle it would probably be OK, but it skyrim it's totally over the top. Honestly, I can barely play the game because if I correct a scene so that I can see peoples faces while even slightly in-shadow, then the rest of the picture is completely ruined (overexposed in the extreme). Using FXAA adjustments I was finally able to get something I can play with the brightness slider in the middle. Now I can go into a different scene/area and adjust the brightness in the menu and usually get an area to be OK. But I shouldn't have to adjust my brightness when moving indoors/outdoors etc.

It would be great to find a way to turn all this crap off and just get a good picture.
