Kind of Sad - a Thank You can go a long ways.

If you sent them a PM asking which they prefer, and they responded, and you donated,

then a thank you from them would be in order.

Now, if it just happened they went on vacation, got hit by a bus, well....

Could be a generational thing yes. I know I'd be saying thanks.

(and no, that is NOT a request, hint etc for a donation. Besides, ya cain't donate BEER via the wee button)

I was wondering as mentioned above, how would an author know who did the donation.

A PM of course would make it kind of obvious.

.. I know that PAY PAL does keep records of all transactions: Money Received and from You to Them and Visa Versa.

There is no "generic" transfers. It is specific. IE: I gave to "A" and I wanted to insure "A" did indeed get it. It is recorded. So yes, the Receiver is notified of the transaction, (at least I know I am) so I know how much was / is given - sent for record keeping.

BTW - donations for Mods is indeed a taxable income

Thus again, Pay Pal keeps records for a period of time as far back as when I joined Pay Pal with is over 16 years.

I found that out from my Tax Guy, as we were talking and this topic came up. Obviously it also depends how much you make in "Donations" ... but yes, it is indeed taxable and one better make sure they know how much and when.

CASE IN POINT:

My tax guy told of 1 story where a Indi game producer did not 'sell' this games but went on a donation basis. He did not keep records, monitored his donations and did not realize it *IS* taxable. He had a no small IRS Headache when he found out he should be keeping records of his "donations".

What was one small favor in his headache is that Pay Pal did have records for a certain period of time.

The Indi Game Dev. learned his lesson and started to keep much better records of his "donations".

Do this, ask your tax guy what happens if someone calls it a "gift' instead of a donation...I bet you'll find all of the sudden that it is no longer considered taxable to the recipient, but "might" be taxable for the person giving the gift.

All right - I'm from a different generation. We were raised with P.K.T.

Polite - Kind - Thoughtful.

We were raised to say, "Thank you." for even the smallest act of kindness.

I was raised the same way, but, with one small addition - I was taught not to have expectations of anyone, because when you have expectations of others, you will almost ALWAYS end up being disappointed.

I have received donations before, but here's the thing: the only thing on my PayPal account is their name. I don't have their email nor their username. I deeply appreciate it, but it's kinda hard to thank an invisible person.

So please don't make this into a 'manners' thing, or a generational thing (eurgh), it's just reality. Not to mention, solicitation for donations here is incredibly strict here, so we mod authors just tend to clamp up on the topic.

Even the PM thing you sent is murky: to be honest, if someone sent me that, I won't be sure how to respond. I'm not sure if if I say one thing, that'll lead to solicitation or not. I don't know if it's entrapment, I honestly don't know.

See... I used to send everyone a thank you, but it got really tiresome. If you needed a thank you, then don't donate, plain and simple. Your 'thanks' is the MA continuing to crank out freebies and more work for you time and time again.

I know I'm a asshat generally, but ya, it gets obnoxious to send emails to people then get one back then you feel obliged to send another one etc etc etc etc /killmyself, I would rather be modding, as I am sure a ton others would be, so take it as your thank you is the next mod they put out, and if you really needed something in return you should probably re-evaluate why you were doing it in the first place.

When you send a donation, I get a notification email from PayPal. It has your private information. Your name and address. I feel like getting back to you is me awknowledging I have them, and a small breach of privacy.

As DDProd said, you send a thank you to the donor, then you get another reply back from them, then you feel obligated to reply to that one, and before you know it, I'm chatting with people I don't want to talk to (I am grateful for the donation but it doesn't mean I now want to be your friend) instead of modding new things.

I've donated to dozen or so authors at least, and none of them sent me any word back. That's PERFECTLY fine with me. I know they appreciate it and that's enough. I even put in the comment field who it was from. I'm just grateful for the mods. The donation is a thanks for the mod(s). The "thanks for the donation" is the new mods we crank out.

So paypal send the real name?

(I've only used paypal for ebay and only a couple of times, so my knowledge there is lacking)

If so, then time to setup a new acct (and get a secondary CC), with different name.

I'm always leery about giving out real info on the net (except for billing purposes, even then I cringe)

Took me too many years to get OFF all the mailing lists etc from when I was at a software co, and used

my real name. uh-huh. nope, not going through that again thankyouverymuch.

Hey modders, I love the mods you have created. Your work is wonderful and makes the games a lot more fun.

But know this, I do now sent you a couple of bucks to buy your friendship. What's that profession again? You know. The one where you pay for friendship. Oh... yeah. Do you measure yourselves that way? Do you think my couple of buck is my way of soliciting you? Or do you just believe us mod users to be beneath you, undeserving of your gratitude and that we can be treated with contempt?

I send you a couple of bucks so you know I appreciate your efforts and want to see more. Now, I do not expect bands and flowers but even my overworked and underpaid waiter says thank you for a gratuity. I expect no less from you when I part with my hard earned bucks to show my approval of your work.

And yes, I am annoyed. Do you not realize how your apparent lack or gratitude makes you look. Have you ever heard the words elitist, snobs or ingrates? Imagine that. You act ungrateful and we think you are ungrateful. Don't act ungrateful, and we won't think you are ungrateful.

Grow some humanity.

Now, for a practical matter. Send your thank you notes from an un-monitored email account. No need to see the circle of emails you have whined about. Or will that cut into your time too much?

I cringe when I see twitch steamer repeat thank you constantly for donations. Also entire routine with a big sign coming down with your name on it like it's you birthday. Really though do you need to feel special to be appreciative. I feel similar in this case. That being said I do understand wanting to be recognized that you are supporting.

Read the above reasons to see why we can't say thank you to donaters. If the Nexus made donations a bit less strict and open, I think most of us will be more than happy to send a 'thank you' message (except Darren, he's a bit off his rocker right now).

I do have the names of the people who donated, but considering the current rules, I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say at the top of my page:

Thanks to ...................... for donating!

I mean, it was pretty clear there was to be ZERO mention of donations AT ALL without question.
