Any way to have FO4 NOT Auto-Update every time Bethesda releases a new patch?

In Steam, you only have three options under "Updates", all of which auto-update the game every time a new patch is released. Then with every patch you have to wait for, then reinstall F4SE, Achievements mod, and several others that need patching/updating. I'd personally rather wait after several patches have been released, then crunch through the process.

Now I know you can play offline... but Achievements, cloud-synch, etc won't function.

Somewhere I heard you can set your Fallout 4 Game Directory to "Read Only", continue to play online, still get achievements, etc, and your game won't auto-update. If you did this of course, you'd have to temporarily deselect "Read Only" in order to update old mods, install new mods, F4SE, etc, and then revert back afterwards.

So has anyone tried this? Does it work? Are there side-effects or other considerations? Or is there any other way to not get auto-updated?

Thanks guys!

I read launching the game in offline mode and changing the update tab on the properties menu for the game is the only way, there's a thread on here about it I can find it or remember the topic thread title sorry

Regarding that thread, you don't happen to recall any keywords that may have been in it's title that might reveal it if I do a search, and/or roughly how long ago the thread was active here?

I appreciate the response. I experimented with launching the game in Off-Line mode, alt+tab to desktop, going back into Steam, but it won't let me change the settings in the update tab. I also can't go back Online without restarting Steam. Pretty sure the game will crash if Steam is relaunched midplay? Somewhat frightened to try this in fear of screwing-up my heavily modded game...

Advise?

Doesn't disabling the option to keep the game up to date work?

Unfortunately there is no option to keep the game from auto-updating. You have three choices:

1. "Always keep this game up to date"

2. "Only update this game when I launch it"

3. "High Priority - Always auto-update this game before others"

I could've sworn there was the option a few years back (like with Skyrim or FNV) to not auto-update, but people are saying there never really was.

Then what you need to select is #3. This way you can be screwed up before everybody else... :teehee:

Personally myself I just take the updates and hope for best. At least to this point I've been pretty fortunate. The only thing that I have to deal with is waiting a bit for an update to F4SE. Other than that everything, at up to now, has worked ok.

So why do you care about achievements or cloud anyway? The first thing I do with any game is to disable cloud, since it's yet another source of error and only useful if you're playing on different machines. If you migrate to another machine, you can still activate it to keep your saves wihtout physically pasting them to the new rig. Also, as far as achievements go, I don't need them. Don't have access to them in any case, since my game is modded.

Well he as well as quite a few others seem to really like and get into achievements. But I'm like you and could care less about that crap. But again some people get into it for whatever reasons.

This made me lol.

Honestly achievements aren't that big a deal to me. But then again, why not? Really it's more about being blindsided by an update and not being able to play when I have the time to. Then there are the handful of mods that will require updating. I don't mind having to deal with all this... it's very much a part of gaming on a modded pc. I just want to be more in control and do it on my terms when convenient to me, not forced to every two weeks (like here lately). And don't get me wrong: I'm grateful to the **SE Team for their commitment and diligence over the years (& w/ ES) and all the Great Mod Authors out there for their hard work and maintenance of their mods. I respect they have lives and updating their stuff requires time. If it weren't for them, none of this would matter.

This is exactly what I was looking for!!!! Thank you for the link!!!! I launch my game through NMM then through F4SE anyways so... PERFECT!!!!
