Zero 3.1[3]{11}

Scullie carefully opened up the mysterious package, after it had been scanned-sensored, and found an old fashioned looking, leather bound, tome of very large size and much thickness. The both sides, of the cover, had the same exotic symbol of the mysterious Gamegods. Yet when she opened it only the first four pages had anything on it. This was a list of identities including Scullie and Mulder. Each entry had an amazing animated 3Dphoto showing the whole naked body, of the person, rotating. There were also the sort of details one would expect, some being of hight security level. There were also some strange, exotic, codes and elaborate symbols.

A few of the individuals were known to the married pair and some of those were in XFIA but over half were either only lightly known of or were unknown individuals.

Scullie sat back from the tome and spoke to Mulder who was sitting next to her. "We have everybody on the list carefully checked out, including ourselves by neutral others. The two of us had best stay here (in the local, temporary, XFIA base of operations) since we will be under heavy scrutiny."

Mulder nodded. "There is plenty that we can do from here. Skinner informed me that he is still attempting to get the XFIA a larger, more fitting, permanent base in this area. As the XFIA Director he is having to deal with the barely controlled chaos of this place."

Around them was a largely bare chamber, a big one, with some furniture and fittings but mostly heaped containers of XFIA property. There was no point in unpacking it because the temporary base was not large enough to take it all.

As for the mysterious sender, of the amazing tome, they had many unanswered questions like why the big tome when only four pages were used; except that Scullie had a strong, subtle, sense that the tome was far more than it appeared to be on the surface, that the blank pages would not remain blank. She also had the feeling that any investigation into who, what, had sent the tome would never get anywhere, at least not for a long while. She turned out to be correct in this matter. So, of course, the why question was not solved either until much later.

Nine 1

One 6.1[9]{12}

It was impossible but the NewSystem Supersoldiers, and the Steeltroopers, were in another gameworld that previously had much in common with the Fallout NewEarth one but was now even more adjusted to fit with it. Badtropolis was a great thriving city, if barely organised chaos dominated by organised crime, brutal police forces, and other such faction could be said to be 'thriving'. From the cable-teleport station they could great cityscape not directly but through a big 3Dwallscreen covering one wall.

Sandra was finding it harder to think of herself as independent from the gameworlds and the other player-comrades were having the same symptoms. They were 'becoming' totally immersed and were becoming superclones of the NewSystem Federation's Ghostsoldier Corps. At least they were gaining homes, families, backgrounds for it seemed that the rest of the NewSystem actually existed; not only that everything was somehow growing more real with every passing second.

Badtropolis was concealed deep underground in a vast suncrystal cavern, suncaverland, that it only took up about a quarter of despite its own immense size. Vertibirds, antigravs and fanjets lifting them, driving them, shot through the air with heavy armour-arms. They shot through great urban canyons bordered by massive, squat, towers and pyramid structures.

The newcomers noted that one building showed the VaultTek logo beneath the logo of something called OverTek. Beneath the VaultTek log was one for RoboTek and so it went with various TekCorps (OverTek related corporations). More disturbing, perhaps, were indications of the presence of the Enclaven and the OctiInstitute. Yet, in the distance, on the other side of a big low hulking hitech boundary-wall, there was something called the the Maharg Corporation, and the Foundation of Steel, along with something called the Gaia Order.

A truly massive statue-tower loomed up into the air of a half naked fat man with a great beard and huge cold-jolly eyes and a smile to go well with them.

Sandra, and the other Steeltroopers, were clearly shocked by what they were experiencing. "Badtropolis Towers, Badtropolis Burgers, Bank of Badtropolis, Golden Badtropolis Casino... it is not hard to see that the name of this bizarre city is 'Badtropolis'."

Massive 3Dscreens sided buildings and the undersides of great metallic, squared off, airships from which radiated long metallic spines. One showed a supermutant, in a fitted business suit, drinking a bottle of NukaCola. Another showed a bare breasted young woman spraying some kind of minty freshness into her mouth; her breasts were decorated lightly with spiralling patterns of bodypaint radiating out from the large nipples.

Sarah frowned. "Those breasts are not natural."

Sandra nodded. "Beyond mere cosmetic surgery are the rejuvenation-regeneration and body-reshaping treatments. You have probably noted that some things are familiar to you and some are not."

A big gracefully awkward saucer, of a medium-large aeroship, glided across the sky. There were more basic airships, subsonic jet-aircraft, helicopters, hubcopters, low flying aerocars and many other machines in the air. At least half of the aerocars, gracefully ugly elongated saucers very much smaller than the aeroship, were of various police forces; the most common was of the Badtropolis Civil Police.

Sandra spoke again. "The great fat man was an insane super genius, of grand charisma, who created this insane secret metropolis in this ancient alien suncavern. There are supermutants, animal-humans, humans, androids, cyborgs, citizen robots, and many other kinds of folk here. Our knowledge, of this place, is far from complete. Most people here are human drones happily program-conditioned from before birth to be workers, soldiers, police, specialists, or some other caste, subcaste, semicaste or demicaste. There are the Grandisto Family of organised scientific criminality. There are the Shining Glorious Path rebels! There are the Greenlovers! There are the Antimen Amazons! There is the Free Prostitutes Union! There is plenty else of extremeness. His name is Grandio Grandisto, the one who is reflected in that grotesque statue-building. He is quite insane and is exiled there in a grand illusion that he continues to run the city on a daily basis. Many are employed to continue to delude him. His name for the city was Grandio of My Loins; instead the people chose the name of 'Badtropolis'.

Sarah Lyons shook her head, in wonder. "Incredible! So, when do we go back to the Wastelands and how? As you can see, all the cable-teleport capsules, here, became inactive after we ceased using them."

It was a good question but Sandra had no real answer to it.

Ten 1

One 7.1[10]{13}

The newcomers used a disturbingly fast, express, elevator that shot downwards to halt at ground level. Going out there, they soon faced a gritty, tough, ghetto landscape that was largely in the moving shadows of towering structures. They threaded along laneways dotted with overflowing metal bins, damaged empty bins, heavily locked steel doors in dank brick walls, the skeletal remains of various lifeforms including humans and radroaches along with many more, much smaller, cockroaches. There were also big, black, sewer rats and scrawny, tough, cats along with stray dogs.

The supersoldiers began to rescue animals, making them vanish. A few of the Steeltroopers considered this activity to be a waste of time, effort, and special energies but were smart enough to say nothing. There was a more objective purpose to what the NewSystem Federation soldiers were doing and that was scientific research of a biotech nature. Yet there was also the purpose of compassion. If there was another reason for them gaining the side-quest, to save the animals, no answers were forth coming.

Sandra was able to materialise outer disguises for the group. They became overly dressed as members of one of the very many minor, often crazy, cults in the metropolis.

Superman flew high overhead, or at least one of him did. They had read a stained newspaper poster, on a dirty concrete wall, that had a free article about how it was suspected that Superman, along with a few other such super powered people, used clones or perhaps androids, to try to be in more than one place at once. From the same poster they had learned about the amazing, disturbing, multiplication of small fringe cults.

Sarah Lyons snorted. "I thought Captain Cosmos was foolish enough but at least he does not exist."

Sandra shrugged. "I suspect that he does somewhere."

Sarah gave Sandra and odd look.

A Civil Police helicopter flew slowly overhead as the newcomers did a strange dance. They hid in the open, doing the sort of weird things that such cultists were expected to do; they were thus ignored. As soon as the helicopter was gone they infiltrated a thick, brick, walled warehouse half full of big, empty, storage containers. Clearly, with evidence of layers of dust and cobwebs, none had been there in a very long time.

While most settled down for a rest, five of them found a computer 3D terminal. They were soon hacking into the Badtropolis Internet so as to bypass being spotted entering the large, overly complicated, network of network-systems. They created a false 'address' and did other tricks to stop anybody tracing them to the warehouse. Everything seemed to be going well.

Then Sandra was getting the group to leave the warehouse as quickly as they could. 'Something' warned that they were not only spotted but that some kind of force was on its way to the warehouse.

They were only streets away, from the warehouse, when three heavily armoured-armed vertibirds flew slowly overhead, towards the building the group had just departed from. They were ugly, black, machines that were soon halted, hovering, as black power armoured figures slid downwards from the flying machines.

The group kept on moving, not trying to hide but to act like eccentric minor cultists.
