ekkert
I've been trying to find out how the level scaling in Skyrim works but no one seems to really know for sure. The only official respone I've been able to find is that it's more like Fallout than Oblivion (thank Talos) but that's still rather vague. I'm currently at level 19 and I find the scaling very noticable. I can see they have taken a bit more effort in hiding it, you don't see bandits decked in full daedric armor anymore and there are some challenging fights at lower levels. But for the most part enemies seem to take the same amount of damage they did at the earlier levels and it feels like the only thing that matters is your equipment rather than your character's skills and abilities. I was hoping someone could give me a straight answer about how it works and how your experience has been with it so far.
Smosh
I don't have any answers but I agree with you.

Tweetybird
Yeah, usually when I step into an area I'm pretty much just thinking "OK, how well is this gonna go". Usually I pull out my bow and give a local baddie a shot to see if he goes down or not just as a bit of a feeler. Edited November 17, 2011 by Tweetybird
Vagrant0
Animals in the world seem to be mostly fixed levels. Certain quest enemies also seem to be fixed levels. Bosses are mostly fixed levels. Everything else outside seems to get stronger as you level. Harder varieties of bandits, harder varieties of mages, foresworn. Inside dungeons, things mostly reflect the exterior. Drugar get harder and harder as you level, first using magic, then using both magic and shouts. You still get some of the weaker ones now and then, but at around level 50 it's mostly ones in heavy armor. Danger wise, you start to see a significant change in difficulty by around level 30 when some of the stronger stuff start showing up regularly. Equipment wise, most of the equipment stays consistent with the type of opponent. About the only types of things which come off as being wrong are random encounters with thieves and mercenaries who end up having higher-end armors. Foresworn are always in their own armors, bandits usually in studded, hide, or iron. Overall, the leveling of things isn't quite so bad, but it really does look to be a level 1-60ish kinda game... Although I've only seen Dragons, Blood Dragons, one Frost Dragon, Elder Dragons, and only 4 named ones, so the variety on that front seems to be fairly small (probably until you get far into the main quest.) Tropxe
Equipment seems far more consistent than in Oblivion, but I've noticed several weird difficulty spikes. In one dungeon, the enemies started out being fine, decently challenging, but then after a while the exact same enemy types in the exact same equipment were killing me in one or two hits and taking an insane amount of arrows to kill. Seriously, a x3 stealth attack would take off about 10% of their health, and then I'd get one more shot off before they clobbered me. My quest-specific ally from The Companions went from being a powerhouse to going down limply a few seconds into each fight. It was so hard I had to set it down to Adept difficulty, then after those few rooms, I put it back on Master to see how it was and it was back to the decently challenging level again. But damn, those few rooms on Master were actually making me laugh out loud at how insanely difficult they'd suddenly become. To put that into context, I've taken on one of those dragon priests that drops the masks with just iron arrows and a couple of weak invisibility potions - on Master mode and right after fighting a frost dragon - and that was nothing compared to those few rooms of previously easy-ish Silver Hand guys. Ghogiel
It's partially zoned. Like step into the dungeon at the labyrinthian place at level 7 and you will walk straight into a dragur deathlord who is impossible to kill at that level imo. Exterior enemies are randomly spawned and seem to have some level scaling, but not all that much. I should be one shotting them with the uber spells and gear I have now compared to a level 5, but a frost troll still takes a few hits. But can't really hurt me as bad. Loot on bandits, they keep mostly the same stuff, but more often have a orcish dagger or something stashed. Random loot in chests is level scaled. In the 30s you start to find ebony, then near 40s you can find dragon. Random loot laying around is also level scaled. they actually appear to place a loot marker, which would be a shield, but that item seems to scaled. I have found many a glass weapon and armor piece laying around which a level 1 character could in theory get to to if they were sneaky. I think that loot is randomly generated.
