your thoughts on mods and games

Ok so i thought i would post this here as i know it will be a bit of a fun topic,

I always seem to get into long conversations with a friend of mine over RPG's and mods, he hates mods period, i on the other hand, LOVE them, always looking for ways to improve my game, and ways to enjoy it even further, it adds more life into the game, i don't get bored with the same content over and over ( for example, how many of you would have played an elder scrolls game or FO3/NV on a console for years and be ok with the standard content? NOT ME )

Not to mention it keeps the game fresh and more alive after years and years of being released, take Morrowind for example, still to this day there are mods being released and TONS of people playing it ( myself included )

the way i see it to put it short and simple. mods do not hurt the game, unless you're cheating for everything and being uber dovakiin, mods can do anything from improve gameplay to visuals to more content, quests, landmass, overhaul the entire game to make it better and more of a challenge, even to come out with community made unoffical patches that fix MANY of the bugs and glitches in the games, granted no game is perfect in the way of bugs and glitches but it darn well reduces the number and stability, immersion of not having to worry about it.

I will give a few examples of what my friend thinks of modding the games,

He payed 60 bucks for the game for the way they made the game to be played and not altered, if he wants an indie game he will buy them,

It's like watching a fan made visual effect, destroys the originality of the game, but it DOES add a lot to the games life span he admits, but different people different taste he says,

Also says he will love the game the way it is, even with all the bugs it has, then goes to say he has to save the way the game is before it starts to drown from community made mods! as he says it ruins the game they took so long and hard to create for us, and how they ruin his gameplay.

To be fair he has been a console gamer for a long time, and starting to convert over, but still plays with a controller -.-

maybe one day we can stop going at it lol.

side note, recently i showed a picture of a retextured piece of armor then what he had and he replies I hate mods! because i said mine looked better lol.

I can go on and on about how great mods are to a game, but i do not want to keep ranting as i want to play some Skyrim right now LOL

So i guess what i'm ranting on about is this...How do you feel about mods and please DO share your thoughts, all ideas are welcomed.

Lets keep it clean to please :)

For most good rpgs, I prefer them without fan based mods. For the past few Bethesda games, I make an exception. Honestly, I find their games really unpolished on release, riddled with small annoyances and bugs around every corner. Without mods, I find their games decent, but not that great. Bethesda should start paying their fans for making their games enjoyable.

The developer isn't worried about modding so why should the player be? I guess coming from consoles he's happy to put up with whatever developers throw at him, denying yourself choice without goood reason does seem a little odd though.

Oh i forgot to also mention that he plays on adept ( normal setting ) as i play on master, and we had a nice chat about it, how i said how can you play the game like that, even on master there is not much of a challenge for me as it does not seen to have a ton of OH CRAP moments and hard thinking and planning out as you would with say an overhaul ( which we also talked about )

He pretty much said playing an elder scrolls game you should not have to worry about how hard it is, and just play it as is...i told him i always am looking for a challenge and anyway to make my game harder and more fun as i hate easy games and easy ways around things..

so he simply said want more of a challenge, of play a shooter, or dota/LoL, then this is where the overhaul conversation came into play and i gave him examples of some....don't get me wrong i love how the games come but they always need tweaks and improvements to make it more enjoyable than it already is!

I also am a fan of shooters, but i prefer my rpg's more and besides for the last 4 months or so iv been on an rpg kick, was cod4 about a month or 2, then before that witcher 1 and dragon age origins/borderlands, doesn't help i am way too backed up on games i want to enjoy, so i think i will spend all of 2012 with rpg's and do what i enjoy :)

Game companies give us the bare minimum. They give us the skeleton, muscle, and skin. What we have to do is dress it up. You can either choose to keep it nude or play Barbie. Mods are different articles of clothing and you can mix and match to your heart's content. Some people won't agree with your sense of fashion but screw them. Who said your clothing was meant to please them?

I prefer lore and low impact mods. Little things like a companion mod that actually fixes them. Perhaps a low key mod that added a completed well done companion. Adding arrows to the smithing.

The UOP. I dislike MMM and or big add it for the sake of having MOAR. Too much low quality junk lumped in, just to make it big it seems, I would rather a high quality mod with 3 missing lore daedra added then one that added a mixed bunch of a 100 creatures, all executed in a various quality.

I've just gotten to that stage of it.

Oh...and raising undead dragons to fight for you

Nothing too game changing.
