Lol, you didn't reload to a saved game after killing Lydia? Omg, sooo mean!

I couldn't do that. I feel bad when she dies, even if I don't kill her. I always reload a saved game. It's gotten to the point I make her wait somewhere safe while I kill off a bunch of enemies cause she tends to die if there are a group of enemies at once.

I want another companion though. I don't want to lose Lydia as an option as a companion. I'm pretty sure you can't have two companions at once. But can I sort of send her off somewhere and then travel with another companion and then send him or her off and go back to Lydia as a companion? I'm thinking of trying that.

Have you tried remapping to the place you were with your companion last? Usually that works unless you told them to "wait" somewhere. Well, then they're still standing there waiting for you and you have to go and find them. Happy hunting! :D

I have accidentally killed off Lydia a couple of times, just as I was going to shout in one instance...she got in the way. In general, she jumps right in front of me and makes it hard to fight. I have replaced her with some warrior from Markarth just to try him out. I went back to Whiterun to drop off some stuff at my house and guess who was there? Lydia! Too funny, I did not expect this. To top that of, I get the distinct impressions she is jealous of my other companion. I don't know if this is possible, but she sure isn't happy about it.

Anyway, yeah, having a companion is great, I just wish they would stay behind you and back you up rather then charging out in front of you in a fight.

Barefoot, I have gotten so many people all up in a tizzy because of my shouting while fighting dragons. The guards do not appreciate it at all. And neither do any of nearby enemies. Sooo sensitive. Jeez!

I hear ya! I got frustrated at Markarth and shouted at a bunch of carts...and those damn guards didn't appreciate that at all. I wish I would have had the option to tell them it was just my allergies....LMAO!

"oops...sorry guys, I couldn't help myself..heh "

here is a question for you guys about companions...do you even need to use companions? I haven't gotten really far into the game so far, but i didnt realize at first that you could get followers. It was strange how i stumbled upon it. I did the series of events backwards for the whole faegarth (name) and other dude who both love the chick that runs the shop in riverwood. I talked to sven (name) first, and he said to give the letter to her saying it was from the elf dude, but i went then to elf dude and told him sven was trying to muddy his name

but i had previously finished the dungeon with the golden 3 claw thing (before even coming to riverwood) so when i went into the shop to talk to the chick, it started the script for finishing/starting the quest (introductory then skipped right into finished it) and her brother the shop keep, kinda bugged out in a way since i had the claw, the game kinda skipped ahead in conversation points

so anyways, after that i went upstairs, and she was sitting there, and the elf dude came upstairs and sat next to us (totally love how npcs interact and move on thier own in this game!) and i had a conversation with the elf and her, but the elf seemed like he had no prior re-collection (spelling) that i had done the letter thing, and he was stuck in the script/dialogue. So i went back outside and down the street and i bump into the other dude, and a few clicks later it said something about i want you to come with me, it didnt say hey do you want to be my companion, the option was simply to follow me so i was like ehh? wth? so i went back into the shop and told him to wait...and he's still standing there waiting....

So i think i screwed up the series of events somehow, i wanted the elf dude as a follower, since my character is a wood elf and i wanted to keep that roleplay aspect...but it seems broken now, and i can only get other dude with me, even though the elf still talks to me like nothing has happened, but occasionally he says "you want to talk to me after everything you've done?" and then you click on him again and he's all friendly....so weird! is this glitched/bugged or what

So back to my question, do i even need companions? i do just fine doing exploring/quests/killing on my own..is a "follower" the same as a "companion" in whiterun at the inn there is a dark elf sitting in the corner that offers her services to you to come along and become a companion..i clicked no for now...but that wasnt the same as me talking to lover boy in riverwood, because with the elf chick it aucutally asked me do you want her as a companion? so...is there a difference here? i'm really confused lol

Do companions become mandatory later on? or is just to help out and adventure with someone not to feel so "by yourself" all the time?

I find them handy for taking occasional aggro in larger fights, but I assume/hope they are not necessary in most of the game. The followers that are assigned in the companion quests are not very effective or helpful. The only follower I found effective so far is the mage you discover during that quest which involved the dream sequence. He can take a lot of damage and can dish out a bit of damage. But he talks a lot and repeats himself incessantly. He was very helpful in one dungeon where my enchanted gear had worn out and I needed extra help.

But I'm not a fan overall. I want an immersive experience, but when I make my follower run after me while I ride my horse, or him/her get stuck behind a rock and I ignore him until I enter a new area where he 'magically' reappears, the followers just don't feel right. Have a hard enough time keeping my horse from joining in fights and getting killed. Except for quests where you are forced to use a follower, I'd prefer to travel alone. If Lydia wants to be waiting for me at my home, that's all good, but she'll be alone most of the time.
