Noobkaka
Not sure if this should be posted here, but it is related to skyrim, so lets go for it. So after a day of playing skyrim (You know, hardcore skyrim playing roughly 6-14hours on weekends) , so lets alt tab at 8hours, I click up AMD Vision Engine control center, I got crossfire 6950's, one of them got extra cooling, looking at the temperature it's at 70 celcius, this is with auto-fan control (not manual), and the fan speed is roughly around 24-38%, now I turn it up to 70% (manual fan control option), and the temperature steadily goes down to about 48-62 celcius. However, you can hear the fans clearly just spinning on 70%, luckily I play with a headset so I dont realy hear it. Question is, is 70 celcius too much with auto fan control. Keep in mind this is crossfire, granted it takes more power and makes more heat than a single 6950 , but still, is 70 celcius too much? Do I need to worry or not? I always force the fans to as high as they'll go when playing games like this as it keeps the card cooler and more consistent, plus it adds to the lifespan. The fan noise doesn't bother me. Set it to manual and as high as it'll go and you'll get more life from the card. Fans are cheaper to replace than the video card. Look on the manufacters website for the high limit on what heat they can/should take.

Arcadiast
smart comments > not so smart comments 70 degree celsius is quiet considered normal nowadays. The 6950 is a high end card and generates therefore a lot of heat. The chips are built to take some punishment and i think everything below 90 should be okay. I have seen a benchmark on a computerwebsite where a 6950 crossfire reached 88 and a Nvidia 480 SLI even 96. You can search the net for "AMD 6950 temperature threshold". That should give you some info. By the way, this has nothing to do with Skyrim in particular. Any software that puts a load on your graphics cards will heat them up. vertex23
I've had my card run at ~102° C for extended periods of time.nVidea GT 9800 - built to last at high temperatures for quieter fans. Cooking eggs on my video card like a boss.

soot00
70's is perfectly fine on load, in fact that's real good. Even 80's is fine. When you start hitting 90's and 100's, well let's just say your graphics card may be working fine now operatiing at these temperatures but you are definitely shorteining its lifespan. If you are reaching these highs you may want to look into your case or fan layout cause it's definitely not getting proper airflow.
