Creation Kit release info and patch fix

Considering that they may be taking up to 2 weeks off for Christmas, I think it's a wise decision to wait until January. That way they can offer support and be able to better monitor any issues that arise. If they released it December 20'th and then go away for 2 weeks none of that is going to happen....

As for Steam Workshop, I think I will continue to utilize this site for all of my modding needs.

I agree, I dont think I will be using the steam workshop either. I am however looking forward to the creation kit. I just hope that it has not been over hyped and that it will actually be greatly improved over the CS

Skyrim is like having a super model for a girlfriend. Patch 1.2 is like finding out she used to be a man.

You sir, just made my signature.

As for the CK, it will give the devs time to relax over the holidays. They are indeed human, after all.

Edit: A spelling error was bugging me.

I doubt steam workshop will end up being that popular. All that one click/easy to install nonsense is just asking for trouble. All I see in the future are people installing tons of different mods without any clue as to what they really do, running into all sorts of problems with conflicts and the like, and running back to the creators yelling about how their mod sucks cause it broke their game.

On the flip sid, you should see steam workshops' TOS as it is right now. Maybe it'll change, but there is a particularly scary part here

http://steamcommunity.com/workshop/workshoplegalagreement

Valve may choose to distribute Your Contribution for free and/or for a fee. If Valve chooses to distribute Your Contribution for a fee, then Valve may set the price for such distribution in its sole discretion, and Valve will pay You as follows, conditioned on Your compliance with the obligations contained in this Agreement.

Beginning with the calendar month in which Valve first distributes a copy of the Contribution for a fee, Valve shall pay to You twenty-five percent (25%) of the Adjusted Gross Revenue (defined below) actually received by Valve from Valve’s distribution of the copy of the Contribution during the calendar month. To the extent that the payment calculation results in a negative amount, that negative amount will be carried forward and deducted from any future amounts otherwise payable by Valve hereunder. Valve will remit payment in accordance with Valve procedures, currently net 30 paid in full. Please note that Valve may change procedures in the future, for example requiring a minimum amount to accumulate before making a payment. You also acknowledge and agree that other users, and Valve itself, may create other works that are similar to Your Contribution(s), and that Valve’s payment obligations under this Section 3 only apply with respect to the distribution of actual copies of Your Contribution(s).

Apparently Matt Grandstaff, the Bethesda community manager, wasn't very clear on whether this would change or not when asked whether there could be fees applied to some mods. He said

Our focus with the Steam Workshop is creating an environment where users can create, upload, download, and rate free user content.

This is a very vague response. It's clearly a yes about the free portion, but is by no means a no to the fee portion. Whatever the benefits may be to this sort of thing, I foresee a mountain of headaches for the community if it happens.

I don't like the idea of the "Creation Kit" being tagged by steam. At some point in future games released you'll have to be logged into steam to use the tools (which could mean all sorts of things including giving them your personel information via steam). It opens the doorway for complancy getting us used to the idea and then they move in and start moderating the what, how, and pricing of our contributions to the community.

You upload a mod to steamworks and now your steam account name is tagged to your work which could be good or bad for you depending on the content of your mod, I see this as a limitation to the mods that can be released and may very well get some modders fussing about their bill of rights. Of course now its optional but this is where the ground work for big brother oversight and control is being laid.

Oh great I just read the part that says Valve reserves the right to make creations similar to ours. The doorway to abuse is thrown open right there. At least with Nexus when you upload content you can put limitations on the use of your work in other mods uploaded to the nexus now...Oh thats a great idea lets copy that and charge people for it without giving credit to the people that made the mod.

Also I agree with some of the posters above stating the obvious "You broke my Fn game Dude" its going to be a nightmare with installing these mods with all the people on steam moaning that your mod is broke trash. I mean seroiusly there's still regular posts on their Skyrim steam page with people going on about how 6 changes to their ini file made there game awesome and mods suck. I've read through piles of negative posts on steam from people that have no clue what mods can do for their game bashing on mods and now Steam wants to "cash in" on user made content.

I'm afraid that we'll start seeing price tags on high quality mods. I guess the days of our free mods/DLC are over. I hope that we'll still have high quality stuff on nexus at least. Sigh.. I hate the greed of this world.

How dare modders try to earn a small return for spending hours upon hours creating content for nothing other than a pat on the back and several complaints.

Those bastards.

This Steamworks crap is just the next step in making pc gaming indistinguishable from console gaming. All the freedom that pc gamers have had over the years, compared to console gamers, is slowly being eroded. They want total control for the simple reason that it allows them to make more money. Nothing evil about it, its just plain old capitalism, whatever the market will bear, and there seems to be no limit to what the market will put up with.

January? Just for the CK to be integrated with Steam? That's pretty stupid. I'll bet that anyone who doesn't mod their games won't have any interest in them now and the people who do mod their games already know about Nexus...

But whatever; worse case scenario is I end up voting with my wallet as I'm sure Steam will find some way to make money off it.
