Faelrin
So to start off with, here's a little background info. This is a used laptop I got a few months ago. It's an HP Pavilion dv6 laptop with Windows 7 64 bit, quadcore amd radeon dual graphics, 6 gigs ram, etc. My brother had to replace the screen (and did so by using one of his older unused laptop's screens), since the original screen was broken, though it is the same size. After I started using it to get used to it I did a factory reinstall to clean it up and make the install fresh again (although there's the bloatware too), then installed updates, Steam, Skyrim, etc. Like the title says I've been getting awful screen tearing in Skyrim. It's only located in one particular area of the screen (slightly upper middle horizontal) and I only notice it when moving around with the mouse or the character. Vsync is left on. No enb installed either. Minimal mods (can give order if needed). I do use SKSE, LOOT, and Mod Organizer (with the BSA management off/unchecked). Other possible relevant info below: Regarding my Skyrim launcher settings, I play in windowed mode, standard, 1024x768, with Antialising and Anisotropic Filtering off. Textures high, Radial Blur low, Shadow Detail medium, Decal Quantity medium, FXAA off, and for water, Reflect Land, Reflect Trees, and Reflect Objects on. Distant Object Detail high, Object Detail Fade is unchecked. View distance settings are generally in the middle with grass maxed out. My Catalyst Control Settings are:Antialising (standard filter and morphological filtering box unchecked) Anisotropic Filtering set to use application settings. Tessellation has the AMD Optimized box checked. Texture Filtering Quality is set to high and the Enable Surfact Format Optimization box is checked. Wait for vertical refresh is set to on, unless application specifies. Anti Alising Mode is set to Multi-Sample AA. Triple buffering unchecked. Refresh rate is set to 60hz (only option) and desktop resolution is set to 1366x768 (high 32-bit). CrossFire is enabled. For my windows theme I use a custom color windows classic theme, with only show window contents while dragging and smooth edges of screen fonts checked in performance options. Dxdiag below for more information in case it helps: ------------------System Information------------------Time of this report: 9/6/2016, 18:19:27Machine name: FAELRIN-HPOperating System: Windows 7 iXenite
Go to your SkyrimPrefs.ini and (if it isn't already there) add iPresentInterval=1. This will be found under Display. You can find this ini file under Documents\My Games\Skyrim. This allows you to keep the game locked the refresh rate of your monitor. Hope this helps. Faelrin
It's already there, and I'm still getting the screen tearing.
iXenite
Maybe try turning it off in Catalyst control and make sure the Skyrim Launchers own VSync setting is enabled? The ini setting adds the VSync option in the launcher if I'm not mistaken. If not, the ini file sets it to be on regardless. Consider turning on the Steam overlays fps counter and see if the frames are going above the refresh rate of your monitor.
Faelrin
Alright so I uninstalled Skyrim, deleted any folders associated with it (data, inis, saves), and reinstalled fresh. iPresentInterval=1 is present under display in SkyrimPrefs.ini, though set to 1 or 0 makes no difference. Only mods installed are USLEEP and Alternate Start (used LOOT to sort and DLC's cleaned with TES5Edit, no SKSE installed, do not have the high res dlc installed, or anything else yet). I set the Catalyst Vysnc option to "off, unless application specifies". I have the Steam fps counter on. I started the game up through the launcher, selecting play, and I'm still getting the issue. I did notice the counter will occasionally go to 61fps, but not higher, which is odd. The only other game I have installed at the moment (Jurassic Park Operation Genesis, an older game), does not seem to have this issue, but I don't know if that is even a good candidate to compare too. I have just tried Skyrim in full screen mode, at the resolution (16:9 widescreen 1366x768) matching my screen's size, and I did not get any screen tearing there. However I would rather play it in (standard 4:3 1024x768) windowed mode, due to checking the internet here and there while playing. Playing in full screen also brought my fps to around 50 instead, though I'm wondering if that was also why there was no screen tearing (fps too low for it to occur). I'm going to try a fps limiter to see if I have better luck in windowed mode. Will edit results here later. Thank you for trying to help me though. Project579
Skyrim probably doesn't like 4:3 1024x768 use OneTweak instead it might fix your problem.
Faelrin
So I just installed that and launched with the skse launcher, after getting that installed. Is it supposed to make it full screen? I should also mention I had no luck with the fps limiter, though I wasn't sure if that would have any effect or not. This is a bother though, as I used to be able to play in 4:3 windowed mode (1152x864) with no issues on my other older laptop (which also had a larger screen and resolution at 1600x900), so I have no idea what it is with this one that is not agreeing with it, that causes the screen tearing, other then having better specs and a slightly smaller screen and resolution. The older one for comparison only had 4 gigs of ram, no crossfire, was a dual core, also win7, ati radeon card with 512mb vram, etc, though also an hp laptop. Project579
One Tweak launches the game in border-less widowed mode it feels like full screen but has the performance and advantages of windowed it also automatically detects screen resolution. Faelrin
Thanks for the response. Was just wanting to make sure that it was working as intended. After doing some play testing with it installed, seems the screen tearing is still going on, but its much less then before. No screen tearing with normal full screen mode, but that's not really good for me, since I would prefer to have the option to browse the uesp, etc when playing without having to quit the game, since alt-tabbing with full screen is unstable. I guess One Tweak is at least a happy medium for now.
Project579
you checked in both SKyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini if iPresentInterval=1? some times it's written in both files.
