A handy tip...

Issue:

I took a quest to attack a fort with the Stormcloaks and didn't immediately save before the assault. We were down to the very last Imperial, and he stepped left and I swung right, cinema-killing the Stormcloak that was next to me. Suddenly, everybody turned hostile. Since we'd fought to the very parapets of the fort, I was forced to kill at least two more Stormcloaks in order to get down far enough for a safe jump off the walls and a sprint into the trees.

My thinking was, "Eh. It'll be just these 'cloaks at this Fort that will be mad at me. So I can keep on going." And so I did. I checked my bounty, wanted for 40 gold in Eastmarch and nothing else. I'm thinking I'm clear. I had a few misc quests clustered in the same area, so I finished those off which caused my auto-saves to get past the point I was at prior to the fort assault. I free-roam to Whiterun, no problems there. Sold some stuff. Bought a carriage ride to Windhelm to announce my success to Ulfric.

We pull in to Windhelm and (I have a 40 bounty here) every friggin guard in the city came after me. No surrender options. They wanted my head on a silver platter. And I've seen several posts on this before.

Remedy:

I backed up to an auto-save from Whiterun and spent around two weeks of Hearthfire just role-playing and getting generally bored with breaking into peoples homes and eating all their sweetrolls. Then I hired the carriage and Windhelm wasn't hostile any longer (but I immediately paid my 40 bounty to seal the deal.) So it appears that if you just go and chill somewhere after a, "Hey, your chocolate fell into my peanut butter," incident, you'll be ok afterwards.

A funny sidenote: I was climbing the steps to the Palace of the Kings to finally talk to Ulfric, when an Ancient Dragon decided to attack. It killed - I'm not kidding - probably half the population of Windhelm and nearly all the guards before I finally brought it down. It didn't want to land, kept strafing over the city. Everybody's friggin dead, right outside the Candlehearth Hall. Damn dragons are like cops... never around when you NEED them.

Never happened for me. And i tend to kill a lot of my own men while doing those sieges, because i see always too late, that they are on my side. Iam voting for big fat sings above everyones head, that says which side they are on >.<.

Also chainlightning is a baaaad idea if you want them to survive. But also, they never turned hostile.

The only time they did was, after i decided that i want to turn into werewolf ... and didnt got it fast enough that the target, i attacked, was one of those essential NPC. The fight was over at that time too and they turned hostile, but i waitet somewhere, till werewolfform wears off and they just actet as normal.

I had a takeover go horribly wrong, as it started I summoned Odahviing, he then killed not only every Stromcloak in sight but all my Imperial allies. After the fight all that remained was myself, my companion, the dog and a pile of bodies.
