Weird glitch with walls turning white/grey along with fps dip.

So it only happens in some areas of vaults or unerground/industrial areas (factories, mechanist's lair, etc.) but I'll look down a hallway and it'll be all peaches and cream, until i look behind me. Then the walls or floor will be see through, and I see into the grey space area outside of the cell and my fps drops from 60- 25ish, sometimes followed by a crash. It reverts to normal if i stop looking in that direction or if I get up close like in these screenshots. v

Now I'm not really sure what is causing this, I have a lot of mods installed, but I deactivated them all and was still getting this problem.

What I've tried:

1:Deactivating all mods

2: Updating video card drivers.

3: Verifying cache files on Steam.

4:Begging.

If anyone has any suggestions or has any ideas that would be very helpful, as of now the game is playable, but those sequences where I am underground are painful.

Room Portals come to mind or just clipping (culling) but I mean you would have to duplicate the issue in a vanilla build of the game to find out if it was related to the modded part of the build. An easy test would be to disable the mods an go in the game an ignore the warning an see if it still happens. Name some of the locations specifically so others could check it. What you could do is get Steam to make a backup install disc, top left Steam menu, back up an restore games, store that, un-install the game. Get the game directory file, config ini, and hidden appdata load order files, and compress it an store that somewhere for later. Install the game from the backup, use a clean save or new game start. Console command it into a test mode for example ~TGM && ~TMM 1 then just speed run to those points if you couldn't just go to the place an test it. Various game settings and tweeks might have something to do with it as well. Temps an age of hardware might cause it too. You know, IF IT'S BLOWING UP GOD D***IT!!!! FIRE IN THE HOLE, GOD D***, I SAID, GOD D***. GET DOWN, HIT THE DECK!

I uninstalled all mods and it was still doin it, but it seems to be just the locations Vormina mentioned. Cait's cure vault, and the mechanist's lair.

Is this a first person thing? Some things have a clip distance I noticed, as it clips out of the scene at certain angles. Running a 90 FOV does have it's drawbacks an could be related, hell it might not be a bad idea for me to switch it back to 75 or whatever it was. You know, cause it would cull more (make it disappear for performance reasons). Got any ideas how I could get there, because I know i would get lost and/or killed several times in this build?

Deactivating your mods won't help you isolate the issue if it's related to a mod your using.

You'd have to uninstall all your mods, and then reinstall one at a time (and test each install in-game) to narrow it down to the culprit.

This to me looks like it's possibly a mesh issue, or a mod conflict.

  • 1 month later...

Had it too, but only in Vault 88. Seems like a vanilla bug as I had it in an unmodded clean install with a new game. It has something to do with portals not being connected very well, like BipolarOne suggested. I first thought it was LOD flicker caused by pre-culling; something that can happen when you scrap unscrappable stuff with mods like Spring Cleaning, Place Everywhere (using those myself) and other Scrap Everythings and the game tries to render stuff that was supposed to be there but no longer isn't. But, since I had it on an unmodded vanilla game, my deduction is that it's a bug...

Sounds like room bounds and portals issue or precombined mesh/previs issue to me too. Vault 88 and Mechanists Lair are particularly bad about this.

That said, mods which alter those areas are likely to make the vanilla problems worse and Scrap Everything is also known to make it worse. In fact Scrap Everything now has versions of the mod that don't let you scrap in those two locations because some people had issues and others didn't.
