Firefox locking up on this site...

I tried reading the faq and keep getting an error message, so, here I am.

Is there a problem between the nexus coding and Firefox now? There never seemed to be when I came here early on.

If not, is there a java requirement for the site? I'm not getting any specific java errors; but, when downloading through

this site, my browser is going unresponsive and then crashes windows exploder.

I'm running twin AMD dual core 5600+ systems with WINXP.

Firefox ver 1.5.0.3

Sun Java 1.4.2_16

I just registered today for premium membership as a trial to see what the benefit is going to be in real terms..

But If I can't stop the site from blowing up my browser, it's a waste.

Thanks

Actually SUN microsystems support a JDK 6 update 4.. Your package is dated February 2002, I think..

Firefox instead has got a stable 2.0.0.12 version for Windows.. and they're working on version 3 beta.

Obviously you must upgrade, I think..

Hate to say I'm going to repair windows for the upteenth time since building this new machine

three months ago; but, .... There outta be a law against Microsoft crap. I never had this trouble

Yes, I'd agree that you really should update those things, especially since FF3 will be released sometime this month, or early next month, who knows. We might not see it until perhaps this summer

I'm not exactly sure if the problem is also Java-related, but it still would be a good thing to update that ASAP. As a general rule of thumb, try to keep your computer, and any software you have installed, as up to date as possible. However don't just install any old update (especially if it's from Microsoft); it would be wise to look for news about the adverse effects a particular update may have on your system. I myself cannot pinpoint exactly where to find this news, but Google is always the best place to start

Anyway, as of last month, most of XP's updates (if not all) should be quite stable on your system, so I really wouldn't worry too much about anything ;)

Have you tried a different browser? Also make sure you enable cookies or you won't be able to download....the cookies are used for internal tracking and allows redirects to the downloads among other things like statistical date for site improvements.

Hope this helps.

Well, I agree with the update. The earlier 6 3 update was on my other machine already; but, it was my primary and became secondary when I built the other... Long story short, I missed two updates on my current primary; but, neither seems to have been the cause of the problem. Explorer took a rather massive dump.. so much so that it wiped my partition tables and rendered my primary drive unbootable.. at least until a reformat anyway.

I'm a tech; so, I have been able to recover nearly all of my data so far. I'm just sick of this stuff happening with Windows. I ran two AMD 2GHZ machines for 4 years, one on XP and one on Redhat 9/Fedora Core. I had to repair or reinstall XP no less than a dozen times in just the last year. I didn't have to do either for Redhat in 4 years.

Hmm.. wonder if we can talk Bethesda into porting my favorite series.. :)

If you are having trouble with Firefox on XP SP2 then chances are it is a plugin responsible for crashing. Suprising that rob was mot more helpful as I just went through the same thing with him four days ago. First thing you need to do is make sure Windows update is set to notify of available downloads. Then when new downloads are available, cross check them with this site. If you have not installed Windows Defender, you should scrap whatever spyware detection you are currently useing and get it.

WinDef was made for Vista but is reverse engineered to work on XP as well. You will have to be able to verify your copy of Windows and if you can't then ommit the previous instruction. As far as FireFox is concerned you will need to be very careful when installing plugins and when you have problems with Firefox always turn to your plugins first. Here is a list of the plugins i can verify have no adverse affect on my borwser, and are currnetly running on my Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.8.1.12) Gecko/20080201 Firefox/2.0.0.12:

Background Image Saver 0.1.2

DOM Inspector 1.8.1.12

DownThemAll 1.0

EM Menu 1.2

Favicon Picker 2 0.3.4.3

Google Browser Sync 1.3.20070523.0

MiniFireFox 1.2.2

PDF Download 1.0.1.1

Scrapbook 1.3.3

Scrapbook CopyPageInfo 1.3.4.2

Smart Bookmarks Bar 1.4

Talkback 2.0.0.12

United States English Dictionary 3.0

Yahoo! Toolbar 1.5.1.20080205

Zotero 1.0.3

These are all the plugins I can't live without, though there are plenty others I would like to have that just aren't stable enough to consider. Google Toolbar is ok too if you don't mind the US gov having unrestricted access to your browser activity. If you got the money I would suggest buying Woody's Winows XP for Dummies found at the link above. I have follwed all his advice and Have not had I problem in two years. Before that I was having to reinstall Windows every couple of months. If you don't have the cash PM me I would be happy to tell you the 7 major guidelines for hassle free Windows operation(two of which I mentioned earlier).

Found the core of the problem last night. I'm up and running again, though still in recovery. The combination of the old java version, multiple downloads and a SATA II support problem in Windows caused the problem. Evidently XP isn't really friendly with a terrabyte of twin Sata II drives. Having the two drives installed was causing

no small amount of confusion for explorer. Running multiiple downloads off the nexus with an unstable java version touched off the tinderbox. I localized the problem to the drives early this moring while doing data recovery. All of my data was salvaged so the only thing lost is time. Thanks again for your input guys, much appreciated.
