Any mods adding in modern day brand clothing and shoes?

Make up your own "brand" then, like they did with "Nuka-Cola". IANAL either, but this one is easy to research. Trademarks have to be vigorously enforced by the mark holder, or they lose the legal protection. (That's what happened to the "Aspirin" brand trade mark. It became a "generic mark".) That includes so called "knock offs", which is why they are illegal ... because they mislead the public. You do not want the legal hassle of having to respond to such a lawsuit, and that is why sites like the Nexus are so vigilant as well.

Afraid the idea is a non-starter as originally intended.

It may not be all that likely that a company will get cranky about it, but that doesn't make it legal and you can still get in trouble if anyone does happen to complain about it.

On the other hand, as I understand it (and I'm not a lawyer), parodies are perfectly legal.

Poking around on google, I see that some folks have used Adidogs to parody Adidas, and Yike to parody Nike.
